“On Saturday, 3rd June, Maharashtra Deputy CM and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that investigations into missing person complaints have led to the unearthing of a large number of Love Jihad cases in the state.

During a media interaction in Mumbai, Fadnavis said that his government is sensitive about the missing person complaints adding that “the detection rate in such cases was 90 to 95 per cent in the state. Still, I agree that more efforts are required to stop the exploitation of innocent girls.”

The Maharashtra Home Minister further stated that there is nothing objectionable in interfaith marriages, however, many cases have surfaced wherein women have been misled and lured with false promises by either married men or those belonging to the ‘other’ faith and subjected to love jihad….”

Wake-up Call

Karnataka elections have brought to fore the problems that ail BJP but have been papered over by the towering presence of PM Narendra Modi ji for long. Though there have been murmurs, those murmurs used to be quietened by the ‘know all’ party leaders at all levels.

Himachal Pradesh was the biggest red flag. An unheard of rebellion in nearly 30% of the seats during election and the resulting defeat was forgotten like a bad dream. The most powerful BJP leaders survived the disaster without any mark,  laying waste the tireless efforts of Modi ji in improving the lot of Himachalis with best possible infrastructure and countless welfare schemes, promotion of tourism etc. If there was any ‘chintan’ or ‘chinta’, none could detect it.

Karnataka was brought back to BJP with some fine Machiavellian moves by Shri Yediyurappa. He also managed to get those MLAs re-elected. He needed to be feted but he was asked to move out to make way for a new leader. It is a prerogative of the party to bring in new blood and change in guard at the top. One can’t question it. But one can question the choice of an uninspiring leader who seemed listless and his cabinet clueless. There was more noise that clouded even good work of the government. If there was an overview of its performance, it didn’t translate in timely corrections by the central leadership.

BJP has learnt the art of repeating its rule that was missing earlier, with the example set in Gujarat by Modi ji. But it failed in Karnataka just as in Himachal due to arrogance, and neglect of ordinary workers and their feedback.

This election in Karnataka was marked by the most directionless and reactive campaign that BJP has ever run. Generally, in all the elections BJP is acknowledged as the party that sets the agenda. Here, the Congress set the agenda and Karnataka BJP simply reacted. Despite being aware of poor performance in governance and election campaign, for reasons unknown the central leadership did not take corrective actions. It was only the intervention of PM Modi that brought BJP back into the reckoning. “Double Engine” has become a cliché. Double engines work well only if both engines work and work in sync.

I travel all across Bharat and meet people from all walks of life. I am witness to the rise of Bharatiya Jan Sangh, later BJP with herculean efforts of generations of selfless leaders and workers who refused to compromise on ideals of the party and kept on working with dreams of taking this nation to ‘param vaibhav’. From the jibes of “Jis diye mein tel nahin, Congress ko haraanaa khel nahin” to rising as an unchallenged numero uno of Bharat’s political landscape has been an unparalleled story that I and people like me have witnessed.

I have met many unsung workers whose eyes well up when they say, “We never imagined we will see this day” (of BJP dominance and Hindutva being the mainstream narrative of  Bharat). Many political thinkers have even penned down this story, including one-time critics who have become stars in the present set up.

Based on my interactions with the humble ground workers, local leaders, MSME industrialists and well-meaning supporters, I share a few points that can be studied and understood by the BJP leadership in the right spirit.

  • Arrogance of power is natural. Leaders need to control their arrogance consciously. In a democracy, you are not here forever. Arrogance puts your workers and voters off.
  • You are in government because of the party organisation, not the other way round. So, do not act like you are above the organisation. The same worker, the cadre that sent you there, can pull you down by mere indifference to you.
  • Find time for your colleagues and well-wishers. Showing off your ‘busy-ness’ is a bad idea. If Modi ji can find time for people from remotest parts of Bharat and outside, surely you can make time for your cadre and well-wishers. Cadre comes first – it is forever, well-wishers are not.
  • Leaders at all levels should be open to feedback and suggestions. They should be available to the worker – at any level. This is the person who has brought victory to the party, not just a leader. Don’t harass him or her.
  • Find ways to solve cases brought to you by your cadre and workers. Don’t find excuses. Because the same person will get job done in your government through other means and then you will look silly.
  • Be proactive, not reactive. Be a thinking leader. Modi ji is the best example. He is always a step ahead in new ideas. He can create castles out of brickbats thrown at him.
  • Communication is a crucial part of your delivery. Engage or find people who can help you communicate better and let people know about your work.
  • Don’t show disdain for intellectuals, specially those who are rooted to the ground. Just because you are in power today, does not make you smart and a know-all. Stop entertaining and honouring intellectuals who suddenly found ‘Hindutva’ just because they smother you with praise. Do not forget the lessons imparted by a great intellectual who placed himself with Atal ji and later Advani ji, brought them to grief and now sells snake oil.
  • Bureaucrats can survive by not acting; because not taking action can save a bureaucrat’s career, but not a political leader’s career. If you are committed to social welfare, your senior leaders will support you, be sure. By not acting, you may rise to your level of inefficiency, but not to the top.
  • Politics teaches you cynicism. Still, try to be straight forward and honest in dealings with some people, if not all. Most of them will turn out to be good. Don’t play politics with everyone. Some relations are above politics and they will hold you in good stead when it comes to the crunch.
  • Politics is not a business or a profession. Though this sounds cliched, most new ‘leaders’ or sons and daughters of the leaders treat it as such. You will succeed better if you treat it as a service to society and nation first.
  • New comers are bound to flock to a powerful party. But you cannot and should not promote them at the cost of genuine workers who have toiled for years. You are destroying the roots by hoping to see the tree flower prematurely.
  • BJP has been known to plug the leaks well in time, even with surgical aggression where required. However, Rajasthan is an example where BJP should have bitten the bullet immediately after last elections. It had five years to recover from a possible rebellion. It dithered. Now ask workers in Rajasthan, they are confused even on a winning pitch. Chhattisgarh is there for the taking but BJP leadership is absent, ask local karyakartas. I can add many examples. So, BJP needs to relearn this art.

We are no one to teach lessons to the BJP leadership which has been steamrolling opposition and growing from strength to strength breaking new ground all over Bharat. It has dominated the Bharatiya political scene for nine years now with Modi ji having a popularity that surpasses any other post-independence leader’s popularity. However, there is a deep sense of complacency in the second rung leadership downwards that everything is fine. I have said it many times and will repeat myself that you can’t ride on the broad shoulders of Modi ji doing nothing. It is unfair and it is unhealthy.

Whenever people like me bring something to the notice of a leader, the common response is “You are too sensitive, Sharda ji.” People like me are sensitive because they are witness to the struggle unlike many new leaders who have joined the party when it is a success. People like us are sensitive but also cynical and a little thick-skinned because we face the most vicious verbal attacks in media and are privy to the thinking of your opposition.

Karnataka loss has come at a very opportune time when BJP has enough time to trim its sails, re-organise itself for the biggest and most ruthless assault on it. For the opposition, it is a question of life and death. Remember, this entire opposition is supported by the New Left and its cohorts in media and academia. If they succeed, it will be a question of life and death for our ancient civilisation that has survived for eons and has just started undergoing a renaissance.

2024 is a decisive war for survival of our civilisation. The Opposition knows this, I am sure BJP realizes it too.

Erdogan Won But Turkiye May Lose

After facing the toughest challenge of his political career to date, Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan got re-elected to a third term. Defeating Kemal Kilicdaroglu, presidential candidate of the six-party strong opposition alliance. Erdogan prevailed over Kilicdaroglu in a run-off election held on May 28 after the first round of voting did not produce a clear winner.

President Erdogan ended with just over 52% of the vote; this clearly illustrates his declining popularity. Almost half the electorate in this deeply polarised country did not back his authoritarian vision for the country. Erdogan’s reelection does not mean that he is popular, or that his policies are approved by the masses. In reality, Erdogan ran for the Presidency for the third time in violation of the constitution.

For the first time in his political career failed to win the election in the first round and won by a small margin in the runoff. Also compared to the previous elections five years ago, although the number of voters has increased by nearly 5 million, Erdogan’s personal vote increased only by 1.5 million. In addition to this, Erdogan’s party AKP lost 7% of votes. Although Erdogan regains executive power with a majority in parliament. However, the alliance he led in the parliament is more fragmented than in the previous period.

While President may assume results as an approval for his domestic policies and his geopolitical course, but he should not get overconfident. The country is deeply divided and though a slim majority was swayed by his populist message, an economic reckoning looms on the horizon. This was evident from the freefall of Turkish currency after the final results were announced.

The Turkish lira plunged to record lows, a sign that currency markets are not confident in the country’s economic future after the veteran leader’s victory. In the last few years Turkiye is going through one of the worst economic crises in its history. The cost of food, rent and other everyday goods has soared, exacerbated by the President’s refusal to observe orthodox economic policies and raise interest rates. The lira has hit record lows against the dollar and the central bank has struggled to meet surging demand for foreign currency.

On the political front as well things look pretty worse. In the last decade Erdogan has taken Turkiye down a more autocratic, one-man-rule style of governance. This has included restrictions on freedom of speech, freedom of the press and free assembly. For the sizable section of the society who voted against him, Erdogan is seen as an authoritarian.

He has stacked the judiciary, monopolizes the media and jails perceived opponents including journalists and critics on social media. He’s accused of allowing corruption to flourish, leading to shoddy, unregulated construction that collapsed in the quakes. He’s replaced opposition mayors even though they won local elections.

This approach undertaken by Erdogan is not new but it got more intensified in the last decade or so. Like in 2008, the constitutional court ruled that Erdogan’s party The Justice and Development Party (AKP) was guilty of seeking to undermine secularism in the country and imposed a fine, although the state prosecutor had sought a ban on the party and its leading political figures including Erdogan.

Turkiye has developed a neo-ottoman foreign policy under Erdogan which is turning out to be a disaster for Ankara. This has involved interventions in the Syrian civil war, support for Azerbaijan in its dispute with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh, and support for government forces in Libya. There have also been increased tensions with Greece and Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean, notably over drilling rights.

Erdogan has also backed Turkish Cypriot leaders in rejecting the UN-backed model of a unified federal Cyprus in favour of a two-state solution. Persuasion of this foreign policy has increased the country’s internal security threats and alienated itself geopolitically. In addition to direct military involvement, the Turkish President is also supporting terrorist and extremist outfits across the region.

Erdogan’s dubious and murky links with various terrorist organizations such as Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, Al Shabab, Boko Haram, Hayat Tahrir-Al-Sham (Al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria), and the Islamic State have been brought out by various intelligence agencies time and again. Because of this only in the year 2021 Turkiye was placed in the grey list of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) which was deeply embarrassing for a G20 economy.

After this new victory there is little reason to believe that Erdogan who is emboldened by a fresh mandate, will reverse the trajectory of his disastrous policies. It is highly anticipated that the coming couple of years will see higher inflation and skyrocketing unemployment that could easily turn into uncontrollable public anger against the Syrians and the Afghans refugees. Even though economic and political crises await Turkey in the near future.

These crises will not harm Erdogan if the opposition does not adopt the right policy framework. It’s a hard reality that the vision of the founder of modern Turkiye Mustafa Kemal Ataturk of creating a modern and secular nation has been thrown out of the window by Erdogan. But the nation will lose a great deal if it allows Erdogan to carry on with his flawed policies and destroy the military, social fabric, political, foreign and economic links of Turkiye.

Dear Foreign Policy columnist, there are no contradictions in Bharat’s global vision

0

Everything that Bharat has done over the past 15 months is fully consistent with its multipolar grand strategy.

Global affairs journalist Emily Tamkin published a piece for Foreign Policy last week about how “India Is Stuck in a New World Disorder”. The subheading informed readers that “New Delhi wants to be friends with both Moscow and Washington, but the war in Ukraine has underscored the contradictions in its global vision.” Accordingly, Tamkin attempted to expose the alleged hypocrisy of India’s multi-alignment policy, but none of her points have any merit.

The introductory paragraphs frame Bharat’s strategic partnership with Russia as supposedly discrediting Prime Minister Modi’s promise at the G7 that “I will do whatever we can for the resolution of war.” In Tamkin’s mind, the conflict can only end with Russia’s total defeat, which she suggests Bharat can contribute to by joining the West’s sanctions campaign. Had it done so, however, then it could have plunged head-first into the food and fuel crises that have been afflicting the Global South.

The predictable turmoil in the world’s largest country might have destabilized it, which no responsible member of the international community should want to see happen. That dark scenario was averted by Bharat’s pragmatic policy of principled neutrality towards the NATO-Russian proxy war and the broader New Cold War within which it’s being fought. This enabled it to ensure domestic stability in the face of those crises while retaining close ties with all key players in the global systemic transition.

The result is that Bharat secured its hard-earned strategic autonomy by proving that it’s a truly neutral actor in International Relations, which can perfectly position it to mediate foreign conflicts like the one in Eastern Europe if requested to do so by both sides. That hasn’t yet happened and might ultimately never unfold, but the purpose in drawing attention to this potential role is to show that Bharat can indeed “do whatever it can for the resolution of war” if Zelensky really wanted to end it.

Moving along, Tamkin claimed that “To listen to the current U.S. and Russian administrations, the world is currently engulfed in an ideological battle.” According to her assessment, the former supports a pro-democratic rules-based order while the latter backs an anti-democratic multipolar one. She then cites various experts who opine about Bharat’s place between “two ends of a spectrum on democracy” “bookended” by the US and Russia.

The problem is that the preceding assessment of each country’s approach to the global systemic transition is inaccurate. The US’ is inherently anti-democratic since that declining unipolar hegemon pressures others to comply with its liberalglobalist demands even at the expense of their objective national interests. By contrast, Russia’s is inherently democratic since it respects each country’s right to manage their internal and international affairs however they like.

Having clarified the truth about those two’s approach to International Relations, it’s clear that Bharat’s is aligned with Russia’s just like the rest of the Global South’s, though that doesn’t mean that Bharat is anti-Western. It pragmatically cooperates with that de facto New Cold War bloc in pursuit of shared economic, security, and technological interests, but India won’t ever subjugate itself to being the West’s largest-ever vassal like its ruling liberal-globalists want, which sometimes leads to political friction.

By the same token, its close cooperation with Russia doesn’t mean that Bharat is pro-Chinese either. Unlike what Tamkin claimed near the conclusion of her piece when writing that “the war has made Russia more dependent on China, and thus less empowered to challenge either it or the United States”, it’s precisely because the Russian-Indian Strategic Partnership has unprecedentedly strengthened over the past 15 months that Moscow has successfully averted disproportionate dependence on Beijing.

One of Bharat’s grand strategic goals is to prevent the scenario that Tamkin mistakenly assumed is already in effect since it could lead to this country having to become the West’s vassal out of desperation to ensure its security if Russia first became China’s and thus turbocharged its superpower trajectory. In that event, only the American and Chinese superpowers would have any real sovereignty in the world system, with everyone else being disproportionately dependent on one or both of them to varying degrees.

The world order that Bharat is striving to build is a truly multipolar one where superpowers no longer exist. Aspiring and declining superpowers like China and the US respectively would instead become the two top Great Powers after losing their hegemonic potential upon the Global South’s rise. The transition to complex multipolarity (“multiplexity”) is a tri-multipolar order where the US-led West’s Golden Billion, the Sino-Russo Entente, and the informally Indianled Global South are the main actors.

Despite China and Russia being in an Entente, neither is the other’s military ally. Their cooperation is aimed at accelerating the decline of American hegemony, but it isn’t directed against any third parties like the EU or India. Furthermore, China and Russia are on opposite sides of the Kashmir Conflict and the South China Sea territorial issue, but their leaderships are mature enough not to let these differences impede their mutually beneficial cooperation.

The unprecedented strengthening of the Russian-Indian Strategic Partnership over the past 15 months has ensured that Moscow doesn’t become Beijing’s “junior partner”, while Bharat’s ties with the West are intended to keep China in check so that its rise doesn’t lead to unipolarity in Asia. Bilaterally, the Sino-Indo border dispute remains in an impasse, but it’s still being responsibly managed by both sides in order to cool tensions and also prevent others from meddling in it to divide-and-rule them.

This masterful balancing act is overseen by External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who geostrategic guru Henry Kissinger praised in his recent interview with The Economist as “the practising political leader that is quite close to my views.” It’s also appreciated by the pragmatic faction of Western policymakers, whose views about Bharat were given voice in Ashely J. Tellis’ latest article for the influential Council on Foreign Relations’ official magazine, though the liberal-globalists’ faction still dominates.

Returning to Tamkin, it’s obvious that she endorses their views as evidenced by her attempt to expose the alleged hypocrisy of Bharat’s multi-alignment policy. The reality is that there aren’t any contradictions in its global vision since everything that it’s done over the past 15 months is fully consistent with its multipolar grand strategy that was articulated in this analysis. Those like Tamkin who still don’t acknowledge this have an agenda in manipulating perceptions about Bharat’s newfound role in the world.

Shivalinga: decoding Devadidev Mahadev’s most significant symbol

1

Bhagwan Mahadev, also known as Shiva, Shambu, Bholenath, and Rudra, holds the title of ‘Devon ke Dev’ within the Hindu trinity. He is revered in both Linga (symbolic form) and Vigraha (physical form), with the former being more predominant. Hindu Dharma is known for its flexibility and liberal nature.

Despite the existence of various schools of thought within Hindu Dharma, they all acknowledge the unity of the Supreme Being. Individuals are free to choose the spiritual path that resonates with them the most. One can worship Ishwara in Sagun (with form, such as a Murti) or Nirgun (formless, often meditated upon by evolved beings like Maharishis) form.

One symbol that is often misunderstood is the Shivalinga. Contrary to popular belief, it does not represent a phallus. If that were the case, the Rishis and Maharishis, who fearlessly explore all subjects and did not consider any subject taboo, would have openly acknowledged it. It is a gross error to equate Bhagwan Mahadev’s symbol with a phallus, as most proponents of Hindu Dharma state.

Reading between the lines

There is often more to life than simple black-and-white distinctions; it exists within the many shades of grey. Similarly, many aspects of Hindu Dharma are symbolic, and those who understand the symbolism behind rituals have truly grasped the essence of spiritual progress. Linga, a Sanskrit word meaning ‘symbol’ or ‘mark,’ refers to Bhagwan Shiva’s mark. It signifies the omnipresence of Bhagwan Shiva, who resides within all of us. The purpose of an external or physical symbol is to assist a sadhak (seeker) in directing their energies towards self-realization.

Explaining the Linga

The Shivalinga consists of three parts, each corresponding to one of the trinities. The lowest part is the Brahma-Peetha, connected to creation (Srishti). The middle part is the Vishnu-Peetha, associated with preservation (Stithi). The topmost part, the cylindrical portion above the Vishnu-Peetha, is the Shiva-Peetha, representing dissolution (Samhara).

ling

The Rudra or Shiva-Peetha symbolizes Tamas Guna, indicating self-spin and movement, while the Vishnu-Peetha represents Rajas Guna, signifying dynamic and active qualities. The Brahma-Peetha represents Sattva Guna, denoting calm and peaceful existence. Some scholars consider the middle flat part as the Yoni and the rising cylinder as the Phallus, connecting it with reproduction. The Yoni stands for female regenerative power and hence is connected with Devi Shakti. However, this interpretation emerged in the post-Vedic Age.

Science behind Shivalinga

Shivalinga symbolizes both the creative and destructive powers of Devadidev Mahadev, signifying his timeless nature. Beyond its religious significance, the Shivalinga holds scientific symbolism as well. It represents the totality of the Cosmos, often depicted as a cosmic egg (Brahmanda). The spherical or ellipsoidal shape of an egg, with no beginning or end, resembles the concept of Shivalinga.

Moreover, according to scientific understanding, the world originated from the formation of molecules, which are composed of atoms. These atoms consist of protons, neutrons, and electrons, aligning with the fundamental elements of the Shivalinga. Although our sages may not have used these scientific terms, the interpretations indicate a parallel between Hindu philosophy and modern physics.

Additionally, we are aware of the fact that as per science the world came into existence with the formation of molecules. We also know that molecules are made of atoms which consist of protons, neutrons and electrons which form the basic premise of Shivalinga as well. The behaviour of Protons, Neutrons, Electrons and energy correspond to Vishnu, Mahesh, Brahma Peethas and Shakti respectively. Suffice it here to say that Hindu philosophy and theories conform with modern physics. Although our sages may not have used these scientific terms, the interpretations make it clear the direction we must think.

A symbol of faith

Hindu concepts encompass both scientific and spiritual aspects, even if the ordinary person may not grasp the scientific significance behind the rituals they follow. It is when we transcend materialistic pursuits that we enter the realm of the Rishis. With that being said, Devadidev Mahadev is perhaps the simplest of all deities and the easiest to please. There are no rigid rules in worshipping Him. Wholehearted devotion is all that is required to seek Bhagwan Mahadev’s grace.

Pakistan

Abduction, rape, forced conversion, and marriage of minor Hindu girls are common occurrences in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. At least 1000 minority girls suffer such sex slavery every year in Sindh province alone. Apart from this, Pakistani Hindus face systemic and institutionalized discrimination and neglect, such as frequent attacks on Hindu temples, demonization of education curriculum, police and judicial antipathy, denial of fundamental rights, and even untouchability. This latest instance of the brutal rape and murder of a Bheel woman in Pakistan is yet another proof of the pitiable condition of Hindu minorities in Pakistan.

Bangladesh

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are relentless and designed to cleanse the religious minority from the country gradually. According to a study by Prof. Abul Barakat of Dhaka University, no Hindus will be left in Bangladesh by 2050 due to systemic and institutionalized persecution. Temple desecration, land grabbing, mob attacks after false blasphemy charges, rape/forced conversion of women, and hate speech are tools used to intimidate and drive Hindus out.

Her mother alleged that on 31 May at night, she and other members of the family were going to a neighbour’s house to take shelter as their house is damaged due to a storm when her daughter Bithi Mondal was abducted.

3) Consistent attacks on Hindu temples in Muslim-dominated Bangladesh are not stopping. This time Islamic radical youth broke the Murtis of 3 Hindu temples in the Patuakhali district. Police arrested a Muslim youth named Muhammad Russel.

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface. Still, the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.

We request all readers to share other anti-Hindu hate crimes that we might have missed in this period in the comments below or by dropping an email to [email protected]. We also solicit support in maintaining the Hindu human rights tracker database.
