Pakistan

Abduction, rape, forced conversion, and marriage of minor Hindu girls are common occurrences in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. At least 1000 minority girls suffer such sex slavery every year in Sindh province alone. Apart from this, Pakistani Hindus face systemic and institutionalized discrimination and neglect, such as frequent attacks on Hindu temples, demonization of education curriculum, police and judicial antipathy, denial of fundamental rights, and even untouchability. This latest instance of the brutal rape and murder of a Bheel woman in Pakistan is yet another proof of the pitiable condition of Hindu minorities in Pakistan.

1) The dead body of a minor Hindu girl was found hanging from the neck in a bungalow located in Khayaban-e-Bukhari, DHA, Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. The girl was named Maria but lovingly called Paaria; the 16-year-old was from Tando Haider, Hyderabad. She worked as a maid at a Muslim physician’s home in the bungalow.

2) According to local reports, Ramapir temple, located at Sindh’s Tando Adam, was robbed of valuables, including cash. The robbers broke into the temple by breaking the main gate of the temple, leaving a trail of destruction and collapse. Robbers stole priceless religious items, cash, a silver murti, which was kept for worship and a huge sum of Rs 70,000 rupees from the donation box along with other valuables items. The thief also appeared to have destroyed valuable objects kept in the Mandir.

3) Muhammad Nadeem reportedly abducted a minor Hindu girl, Kamla, daughter of Sumar Meghwar, from her home in Sindh’s Tando Allahyar. He then forcibly converted her to Islam and married her. Nadeem is a resident of Darya Khan Thahim in Tando Allahyar.

4) Minor Hindu girl Maya, daughter of Bagho Kohli, resident of village Haji Muhammad Salah Nizamani, District Tando Muhammad Khan, Sindh, was abducted from her home. She was forcibly converted to Islam by Peer Agha Jaan Sarhandi at the Dargah Gulzar-e-Khalil in Samaro, 95 km away, and married to Abid Ali, son of (s/o) Muhammad Ramzan Sand. The nikah was solemnized in the Mirpurkhas court.

World

1) Tensions in Myanmar have led to communal violence, with nearly 5,000 houses of Buddhists and Hindus destroyed by Rohingya Muslims in Buthidaung, near the Bangladesh border. The situation in Myanmar is worsening, with increased fighting between the military-led junta and ethnic rebel groups, especially in Rakhine State.

2) A case of love jihad has come to light from Nepal’s Jhapa district. A youth named Firoz Mansuri kidnapped a minor Hindu girl one and a half months ago and took her with him. The victim’s family complained to the police on 24 March 2024. A total of 7 people, including Ohid, Majudin Khatun, Sakina Khatun and Alam, have been named in the complaint. The Nepali police have not yet been able to recover the victim.

3) A controversy erupted after Abdellatif Ouisa, a Germany-based Muslim Dawah influencer, posted a video of himself reciting a Surah from the Quran in front of the revered Bhagwan Murugan statue at Batu Caves temple in Malaysia. The video, which criticises idol worship, has garnered lakhs of views on TikTok and thousands more on Instagram and Facebook, drawing sharp criticism from the Hindu community.

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface. Still, the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.
