Hindus under attack: a weekly roundup of hate crimes, persecution, and discrimination against Hindus

Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalized & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.

In this weekly summary for the period from 16 October to 22 October 2022, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:

Bharat

1) In a recent video interview with a newspaper, KPCC President K Sudhakaran (Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee) said that there were profound differences between politicians hailing from the northern and southern districts of Kerala. To drive home his point, Sudhakaran wrongly interpreted and thereby openly insulted the Ramayana.

2) 25-year-old Nitesh, a resident of the Shadipur area in Delhi, succumbed to injuries on Saturday night after a murderous assault by three Islamist men on the intervening night of October 12-13.

3) Another young student and victim of grooming jihad from Kerala has committed suicide. A case has been registered against the student’s friend and classmate. Altaf, a Malayali classmate, has been booked by the police in the incident of 22-year-old Bhuvana Babu’s death.

4) A video of a burqa-clad woman shoplifting clothes from a retail store in Mangaluru, Karnataka has gone viral on social media. The incident took place at the Sandhya Textiles store in the Kavoor area of the coastal town on September 26.

5) Puran Krishan Bhat, a Kashmiri Pandit killed by terrorists in the Valley, was cremated in Jammu on Sunday. Bhat’s body was brought to his Jammu residence from the Chaudrigund village of Shopian district Saturday evening.

6) The latest to indulge in hate speech against the ‘majority’ community is AIMIM (All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen) leader Shaukat Ali.

7) LeT jihadi was arrested for the murder of UP labourers Monish Kumar and Ram Sagar who were killed in a grenade attack in Kashmir.

8) ‘Dalit Christian’ Quint columnist wants to use SC-ST Act on Brahmin neighbour for allegedly objecting to a wi-fi line.

9) A 24-year-old Muslim man, Syed Moin, has been arrested for forcing an 18-year-old Hindu girl to elope from Bengaluru and then convert to Islam at a dargah in Andhra Pradesh for ‘marriage’. This is the first arrest under the recently promulgated Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act.

10) A case of suspected grooming jihad has come forth from Raipur where Mohammad Wahid Ali has been accused of murdering his ‘girlfriend’ Monika Yadav. Reports state Monika had gone on a bike ride to Nava Raipur with Ali but it was her dead body that came home.

11) Shocking details have come forward of PFI’s (Popular Front of India) sinister plan to demolish the Prabhu Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. During a hearing seeking custody of the five PFI terrorists who were arrested, the Maharashtra government’s lawyer revealed that PFI intended to rebuild Babri Masjid after razing the Ram Mandir which is currently being constructed.

12) Recently, a committee headed by retired Justice Madan Lokur released a “citizen’s report” on the 2020 anti-Hindu Delhi riots. In the name of analyzing, the report furthers the leftist-Islamist narrative of the Hindu community being the aggressor in an attempt to absolve the actual Islamist aggressors.

13) DMK ally and Hindu hater Thol.Thirumavalavan has demanded that the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Board (HRCE) be split into Saiva and Vaishnava boards.

14) A young Hindu man in Alwar, Rajasthan has complained that his parents are forcing him and his wife to convert to Christianity and desecrate images of Hindu deities whenever the couple try to worship.

15) Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil compared Bhagavad Gita to Quran and said that Bhagwan Krishna taught ‘jihad’ to Arjun.

16) As per reports, a Shiva temple located close to Chabua Samshan was set afire in Assam’s Dibrugarh in the early morning hours of Thursday, October 20.

Pakistan

Abduction, rape, forced conversion, and marriage of minor Hindu girls are common occurrences in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. At least 1000 minority girls suffer such sex slavery every year in Sindh province alone. Apart from this, Pakistani Hindus face systemic and institutionalized discrimination and neglect, such as frequent attacks on Hindu temples, demonization of education curriculum, police and judicial antipathy, denial of fundamental rights, and even untouchability.

1) Hindus are protesting for Chanda Maharaj (Mehraj) to be returned to her parents. The 15-year-old girl was abducted on Tuesday from the Fateh Chowk area of Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan when she was on her way back home.

2) Three cases of abduction of Hindu minor girls have come to the fore.

Bangladesh

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are relentless and designed to gradually cleanse the religious minority from the country. According to a study by Prof. Abul Barakat of Dhaka University, no Hindus will be left in Bangladesh by 2050 due to systemic and institutionalized persecution. Temple desecration, land grabbing, mob attacks after false blasphemy charges, rape/forced conversion of women, and hate speech are some tools used to intimidate and drive Hindus out.

1) Miscreants attacked the Shasmankali temple, vandalized the murti, broke the furniture and looted cash money from the donation box at late night on October 18, 2022, in Habiganj’s Madhavpur (tweet archived here).

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface, but the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.

We request all readers to share other anti-Hindu hate crimes that we might have missed in this period in the comments below or by dropping an email to [email protected]. We also solicit support in maintaining the Hindu human rights tracker database.
