A Hindu temple was vandalized in Assam’s Dibrugarh in the early morning hours of Thursday, October 20. As per reports, a Shiva temple located close to Chabua Samshan was set afire. The area has seen high rates of conversion to Christianity. Locals have alleged that the incident is a result of post-conversion radicalization.
The miscreant who vandalized the temple is said to have fled the spot following the incident. Local Hindus were angered by the incident and Hindu organizations demanded swift and strict action on the matter. Indigenous rights group brought the incident to light in its tweet (tweet archived here).
The Dibrugarh police confirmed the arrest of one accused in the case but as has become their wont the arrested person was termed ‘mentally ill’. Those who indulge in anti-Hindu crimes conveniently become mentally unstable when it comes to punishing them. This raises doubt as to whether their crimes are being diluted by the secular state because they belong to a particular religious denomination.
“It is also a big question, why so-called ‘mentally ill’ accused do not vandalize any Church or Mosque in their locality, the plea for a convenient alibi used at tutoring of Advocates to evade Criminal liability and severe punishment, similar to the use of Juveniles in Stone-throwing and in ‘SarTanSeJuda’ mobs among the Jihadis”, highlights HinduExistence.
A similar incident was reported in Guwahati’s Bhetapara area in May this year. Unidentified miscreants vandalized the temples of Bhagwans Shiva and Ganesh and damaged the murtis. Devotees discovered the murtis and Shivling discarded in a rivulet next to the temple.
