The abduction of Hindu girls in Pakistan’s Sindh should be a cause of concern

Hindus account for 2.14% of Pakistan’s population or 4.4 million people according to the 2017 Pakistan Census. Also, Pakistan Hindu Council has claimed that there are 8 million Hindus living in Pakistan. However, amongst this population Hindu Girls especially (minor girls) have to face several atrocities in Pakistan.

A young Hindu girl from Tando Muhammad Khan Sindh belonging to the Meghwar community was abducted and then married after forcibly converting her religion. The mother of the abducted girl has been making rounds of the police station for five to six days but no one is listening to the beleaguered woman. (tweet archive, video archive

Another 15-year-old Hindu girl named Chanda from Hyderabad, Sindh was abducted while returning from school by Shaman Mugsi and his friends. The demand to arrest the accused has been raised from SSP Hyderabad but the girl is yet to be found. (tweet archive)

In Dandhari Tathu, Sindh, another Hindu Girl named Waal Bai d/o Panju Maheshwari (tweet archive, video archive) was abducted at gunpoint by Shahid Unar. The family was assured by locals of the recovery of the girl and persuaded not to lodge an FIR. Now the girl has been converted to Islam. (tweet archive, video archive)

Over 90% of Pakistani Hindus, who constitute 2-4% of Pakistan’s total population, live in Sindh; mostly concentrated in border districts like Umer Kot, Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Ghotki, and Sanghar.

And most of these Hindus are from poor, marginalized SC/ST communities. Yet, rather than protecting them, the Pakistani state leaves them at the mercy of Islamists and feudal landlords who still practice bonded labour. Around 1000 Hindu girls, mostly minors, are abducted each year for sex slavery or forced conversion and marriage.

  1. It’s a curse to be a Hindu in the Islamic state of Pakistan and Bangladesh where this minority group is tortured, raped, killed and forcibly converted to Islam. There is none to save them. No NGO bodies and nor the UN Human Rights Commission come forward to alleviate them from their distressed state of living.
