After threatening BJP leader Kalyanaraman with murder, Islamic organisations in Tamil Nadu have started a hate campaign against the Marwari community in particular and North Indians in general accusing them of ‘goading’ Kalyanaraman. Tamil Nadu BJP leader Kalyanaraman who is outspoken about issues regarding Islamists was arrested based on Muslims’ complaint that he demeaned their prophet in a speech. Even after his arrest, Islamists couldn’t hide their blood thirst and are openly advocating for his murder as per Sharia (Muslim law) in public speeches whipping up frenzy among the crowds.
Under the guise of protesting against Kalyanaraman, Islamic organisations are spearheading a hate campaign against the Marwari community in Trichy. Some Muslims distributed pamphlets in a lane in Trichy where the majority of the shops are owned by Marwaris. In the pamphlet the shopkeepers were asked, not so subtly, to shut their shops on 8th February. The pamphlet demands that Marwaris leave TN and go back to their ‘native place’. It accuses them of ‘funding BJP’ which is trying ‘to foment communal unrest’.
It claims that Hindus, Muslims and Christians are living like brothers and sisters in TN but BJP is trying to create unrest by ‘spreading hate’ in society. It says that if there is any violence due to this and public properties get vandalised, then the Marwari community should take responsibility and the government should collect compensation from them. “BJP’s vehicle, communal violence, is fuelled by the Marwaris. If the fuel supply is stopped then the vehicle will also stop” is a phrase that has been used in the pamphlet.
It further says that Kalyanaraman spoke ill of Islam’s prophet with the confidence that Marwaris provide financial support to his party, and asks the shop keepers to close their shops in solidarity with Muslims in condemning Kalyanaraman’s communal speech. In the end, the pamphlet issues a threat, “We will provide a livelihood to those who come to us..if you make mischief we’ll shut down your shops permanently”. The act of brazenly distributing this pamphlet in the same neighborhood where Marwaris do business has shocked the community.
BJP cadre protested against this hate campaign and sat in protest with Marwaris and North Indian communities, demanding that Tamizhaga Makkal Jananaayaka Katchi (Tamil People’s Democratic Party i.e. TPDP) must be taken to task for spreading hate against a particular community and advocating violence. However, the BJP protesters were arrested instead, and it was only after much insistence that 4 TPDP functionaries were also arrested by police. TPDP is a party founded by one K.M.Shariff, a disciple of Palani Baba aka Ahmed Ali, a notorious fundamentalist Muslim leader.
This is not a new phenomenon as hate campaigns against North Indian communities have become casual with the constant propaganda that “North Indians steal Tamils’ job, business opportunities”. Naam Tamilar Katchi president Sebastian Seeman has sped up the process by connecting every other issue Tamils face to North Indians and the central government.
Last year in January, Tamil Desiya Katchi (Tamil Nationalist Party) took up a campaign that Marwaris should be sent out of TN as they are grabbing the job and business opportunities of Tamils. They even tried to lock a Marwari shop forcefully during their protest. Also in last January, a shopkeeper Dinesh who runs a shop in Ritchie Street, Chennai was attacked by 80 Muslims who threatened to kill him for distributing pens with the words ‘we support CAA & NRC’.
While Periyarists and Dravidian supremacists like DMK join hands with Islamists in targeting Hindus and North Indians, what they hide from the ordinary Tamil is that the same Islamists will not hesitate for a moment before attacking Tamilians too as happened last year with a TN govt employee who was brutally thrashed by anti-CAA Muslim protestors merely for saying ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’.
