Hindus Under Attack: A Weekly Roundup of Hate Crimes, Persecution, and Discrimination Against Hindus

Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalised & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.

In this weekly summary for the period from 17 May to 23 May 2026, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:

Bharat

1) A political controversy has erupted in Karnataka after nearly 48 Islamic organisations convened at Bengaluru’s Town Hall on 17 May and placed a series of community-specific demands before the Congress-led state government. The convention, organised under the banner of the Federation of Karnataka Muslim Organisations, called for separate budgetary allocations for Muslims, restoration and expansion of reservation quotas, repeal of the anti-conversion and cattle slaughter laws, and greater political representation for the Islamic community.

2) Officials at the HR&CE-administered Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram have suspended six employees after an internal inquiry allegedly uncovered large-scale irregularities in the temple’s laddu Prasadam preparation, sales and free distribution system, with estimated losses pegged at ₹3.40 crore.

3) The National Investigation Agency has filed a 7,500-page chargesheet against 10 accused in the Red Fort area car bomb explosion case that killed 11 people and injured several others in Delhi last year. The NIA Chargesheet has revealed ‘Operation Heavenly Hind’ Plot to impose Sharia rule in Bharat through terror network.

4) A serious case of assault and alleged harassment of a Hindu couple has surfaced from Maharashtra’s Mira Road area after an Ola-Uber driver and his girlfriend accused a group of men led by Hilal Khan of attacking them following a dispute at a CNG filling station. According to the FIR, the complainant, 29-year-old Ajay Rajendra Chaudhary, an Ola-Uber driver residing in Bhayandar East, alleged that he and his girlfriend Roma Jaibhagwan Kagda were violently attacked by multiple accused after a disagreement over queue discipline at the gas station escalated into physical assault.

5) A major controversy erupted at the historic Badami Mandir complex in Karnataka’s Bagalkote district after a Muslim staff member was allegedly seen wearing slippers and hijab inside the sacred Mandir premises, triggering strong objections from Hindu devotees and tourists present at the site. The incident, recorded on mobile phones and widely circulated on social media, has since gone viral and sparked intense public debate over religious customs and respect for places of worship.

6) Tension gripped Herur in Madikeri’s Kodagu district after allegations surfaced that a building constructed in a tribal colony was intended to be used for Christian preaching and religious conversion activities. The situation escalated when a group of Christian people from Tamil Nadu reportedly arrived to inaugurate the building, triggering opposition from local villagers. As per reports, following objections raised by residents led by former Nakur Shirangala Gram Panchayat president Mandodi Jagannath, a complaint was lodged at the Suntikoppa police station. Police officials, including Kushalnagar Circle Inspector Dinesh Kumar and Suntikoppa PSI Mohanraj, rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

7) This incident from Pune’s Dhanori, recently gained attention on social media. It concerns an illegal occupation of private land and the violent clashes that followed court-ordered repossession. Ilahi Sheikh allegedly had occupied a Hindu-owned land parcel for 10 years. Following a court order permitting the Hindu owner to take back possession, violence erupted when the Hindu family attempted to reclaim the land. It is alleged that Sheikh, supported by a mob of women, attacked the Hindu family.

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface. Still, the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.

We request all readers to share other anti-Hindu hate crimes that we might have missed in this period in the comments below or by emailing [email protected]. We also solicit support in maintaining the Hindu human rights tracker database.
