US Lawmakers were reported to have urged Secretory of State Marco Rubio to raise the issue of the revocation of FCRA license to Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity during his visit to India. Notably, it was in 2021 that license of FCRA to Missionaries of Charity was revoked by Ministry of Home affairs (MHA) due to the financial irregularities, and also the charge of religious conversion of young girls of Gujrat by its cadres. However, it was reinstated later. However, its tenure is ending in December 2026 and their concern is as to whether it would be renewed or not. It must be mentioned that the provisions regarding FCRA are going to be amended drastically by the MHA. Notably, while in Bharat Marco Rubio chose to visit Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity first!
Notably, the higest head of Catholic Church across the world, Pope John Paul, had preached before the Cardinals of the country assembled in Calcutta, when he visited Bharat in 1998: “The freedom of religion includes freedom to convert. If one wants to change one’s religion and gets converted, no one has any right to bring about change in one’s intention directly or indirectly. In the first 1000 years after Christ, Christianity was established in Europe, in second millennium in Africa and in the third millennium Christianity should reap a good harvest in Asia.”
The organisations whose FCRA was revoked in 2021 were Project Joshua’s Indian mission, World Vision and other similar organizations indulged in bringing about evangelization in the country as justified by Pope. World vision has been notorious for being an extended arm of US state department.
Claiming himself to be born-again Christian than a secularist, George Bush was the one to have established an office for Project Joshua in 2001 in White House itself. This war-like project was headed by none other than Jim Howey, considered to have been the legal counsel to Mother Teresa in 1980. Allocating fund worth billions of dollars to it, the organization was assigned to the task of preparing the plan ‘with military precision’ of collecting all ethnographic information of Bharat, about its regions populated predominantly with poor scheduled castes and scheduled tribes people; and, obviously, to lure as many of these people as possible away from the fold of Hindu Dharma!
In the book ‘The Armies of God: A study in Militant Christianity’ its author, Iain Buchnan, views that World Vision and other major missionary’s sponsored NGOs are the arms of US State Department implementing US foreign policy objectives with regard to Christian Evangelism.
