Islamists occupy Santal Hindu houses in Dinajpur, Bangladesh

Recently, on the occasion of Mujib Barsha, the government of Bangladesh made a gift to the Santal Hindus of the country. But this time there is an allegation that their shelter was being occupied. The Santal Hindu community is now spending their days in other people’s backyards due to house encroachment. The area around Fazilpur of Dinajpur Sadar Upazila has become quite noisy around this incident. The victim Santals complained that some Islamist families of the local Chilmon Khan Dighi had occupied their houses. This has led to a clash between the two communities.

Fazilpur, Dinajpur.

Santal Hindus complained about the matter to the Nirbahi officer of the upazila last Tuesday. In the written complaint, they said that after getting the house documents from the government, when they went to the house, the local Islamists threatened the Santal Hindus and locked the houses. Although the house deeds are with them, the houses are occupied by the Islamists. It is known that Chilman Khan Dighi covers an area of 9 acres. Houses were constructed for 52 Santal Hindu families under the shelter project on three banks of the Dighi. On the eastern half of the Dighi is a Muslim cemetery. The remaining part is the crematorium and temple of the Santal Hindus. On about an acre of land, Kodaildhoya Dighi is next to it. Already, 40 Santal Hindu families have moved into 40 homes. However, 12 families in the houses allocated in the third phase are not able to go home due to the obstacles of the Islamists.

Abhijit Basak, chairman of Fazilpur Union Parishad, said that the houses were allotted to Santal Hindus living across Chilmon Khan Dighi from the upazila. But some people forcibly occupied some of their houses. Since the victims are Hindus, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer was informed to settle the matter.

Local Santal Hindu representative Robin Murmu said, “more than a hundred Santal Hindu families have been living in Pargaon village for three generations, including Chilmon Khan Dighir Par. Among them, 167 people live in 30 families. All had mud houses. They were in a lot of trouble. The hardship was relieved to some extent after the government built the houses. 40 families were able to get into the house, but the remaining 12 families were not able to get up. A few families of Islamists occupied their houses for the sake of the cemetery.”

Hindu leader Pritam Das.

Previously, on September 9, police arrested Pritam Das, the Hindu leader of the tea workers’ movement in Sylhet, Bangladesh, on charges of insulting Islam. The police filed a case against him under the Digital Security Act, accusing him of insulting Islam. Pritam Das is currently in police custody.

China steps up bid to cultivate ties with Nepal’s parliament

0

In a bid to cultivate ties with Nepal’s parliament, China’s top legislator Li Zhanshu signed an agreement with Agni Prasad Sapkota, speaker of the House of Representatives, the lower house of parliament, on Monday.

Li and his Nepali counterpart Sapkota inked the six-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) following their hour-long delegation-level talks at the Federal Parliament Building, New Baneshwar.

According to the text of the agreement shared to media, Nepal and China’s legislatures will intensify their engagements and exchanges on governance, legislative and supervisory practices under the framework of the China-initiated Belt and Road Initiatives (BRI).

“The two sides also agreed to enhance cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative as per the understanding reached between the two governments in the past,” read the text of the agreement.

This is for the first time, legislatures of Nepal and China signed the formal agreement to enhance cooperation. Earlier, parliamentarians of the both the countries had normal interactions, including exchange of visits for the past few years.

The agreement seeks to build goodwill and mutual trust between the two legislatures and respect sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence and development path and matters of common concern.

China has, of late, stepped up its engagements with the entire political spectrum of Nepal. Li’s visit is one of the high-level visits from China to Nepal in recent months. The focus of the current visit is to cultivate ties with parliamentarians also partly due to geopolitical reasons, observers said.

“The Chinese could have realised the importance of Nepal’s parliamentary exercise following the passage of the Millennium Challenge Corporation Nepal Compact, a $500 million US grant agreement,” Rupak Sapkota, a China watcher said in a recent interview with the Kathmandu Post newspaper, adding “Perhaps that was an added motivation to push for greater engagement with Nepali parliamentarians.”

In February this year, Nepal’s parliament passed the US-initiated MCC Nepal Compact, despite China’s public displeasure. China and the US also engaged in war of words over the MCC Nepal Compact accusing each other of violating Nepal’s sovereign decision.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the US of employing coercive diplomacy against Nepal while the US countered that it was China who was behind the delay in passing the US grant program MCC.

In whirlwind visit, Li meets Nepal’s PM, political leaders.

Li, the chairman of China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee, who arrived in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu on Monday afternoon on a four-day visit, is holding a series of high-level meetings.

Li, the third-ranked leader in China’s political hierarchy, held separate meetings with Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Foreign Minister Narayan Khadka and National Assembly Chairman Ganesh Prasad Timalsina, on Tuesday.

The two sides discussed a number of bilateral issues including bilateral trade, investment, connectivity, return of Nepali students to China, resumption of passenger flights, and reopening of border ports, according to a statement issued by Nepal’s foreign ministry.

“The Chinese side appreciated Nepal for its stand on One China policy and its commitment not to allow the Nepali territory to be used against the core interests of China,” the ministry said.

On Tuesday, the Chinese leader also met chairman of the CPN (Maoist Center) Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda and CPN (Unified Marxist Leninist) chairman KP Sharma Oli in a bid to see the possibility of alliance among the communist forces in Nepal in the post-election scenario. The Chinese have a soft corner for Nepal’s communist forces and they have been encouraging them to come together and forge an alliance. However, its hopes have been dashed following the vertical split of the then Nepal Communist Party (NCP) in March 2021 due to a bitter factional feud.

In meeting with Prachanda, the Chinese leader sought help to execute connectivity projects under the Belt and Road framework proposed by China, Ramesh Malla, an aide to Prachanda said.

Li is visiting Kathmandu at the invitation of Nepal’s parliament speaker Sapkota. Sapkota is also former leader of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center) led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda. On Monday afternoon, Li and his Nepali counterpart Sapkota held delegation-level talks at the Federal Parliament Building in which the two sides agreed to enhance parliamentary exchanges.

Li’s stopover in Nepal is part of his four-nation tour that includes Russia, Mongolia, Nepal and South Korea.

Li, the leader of the 67-member visiting Chinese delegation, is also part of the big-seven, headed by the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC), who comprise the standing committee of the 25-member Politburo.

He is the third Chinese leader to visit Nepal this year. In the second week of June, Head of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) international department, Liu Jiancho, visited Nepal and gave a message that China wants to enhance ties with all the political parties including the chief ruling party Nepali Congress, which has maintained a close ties with the United States in the recent years.

Prior to that, in the last week of March, China’s foreign minister and state councilor Wang Yi came to Nepal.

BAPS Mandir in Toronto, Canada defaced with pro-Khalistan, anti-Bharat slogans; temple appeals for peace

A BAPS Swaminarayan temple in Toronto, Canada has been defaced with pro-Khalistan and anti-Bharat slogans in yet another anti-Hindu hate crime from the Anglosphere. Videos showed ‘Khalistan Zindabad, Hindustan Murdabad’ painted on the walls of the temple.

Indian High Commission in Ottawa has condemned the acts of vandalism and urged the Canadian authorities to take necessary action.

Sikh activist Puneet Sahani, who routinely busts Khalistani propaganda, called out this hate crime and challenged Canadian politicians to tackle this ugly extremism head on by tweeting, “Can @PierrePoilievre assure his Conservatives wouldn’t indulge in identity-politics? Can his deputy @TimUppal condemn this act unequivocally & assure that he’d not overlook Khalistan extremism when in power?”

Chandra Arya, a Canadian Member of Parliament, also tweeted, “Vandalism of Toronto BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir by Canadian Khalistani extremists should be condemned by all. This is not just an isolated event. Canadian Hindu temples have been targeted in the recent past by these kinds of hate crimes. Hindu Canadians are legitimately concerned.”

The BAPS mandir in Toronto has issued an appeal for peace

“We are shocked and saddened by the anti-India graffiti at the gates of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Toronto, Canada by anti-social elements. The BAPS temple in Toronto, like all temples of BAPS worldwide, is an abode of peace, harmony, equality, selfless service, and universal Hindu values.

At this critical time, His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, has prayed for peace and unity and has appealed to all devotees and well-wishers to maintain peace.

We are thankful to the appropriate authorities, including the governments of India and Canada, for their continued support and sympathy. Let us all join in worldwide prayers, in private and at home, that God blesses and guides us all to continue to do good and think good of all.”

Hindu temples have faced a string of attacks, including both vandalism and robberies, in Canada, USA, UK and Australia in recent years. In February, 6 Hindu temples were vandalized or burgled in Toronto within a span of just 10 days. In August, a Hindu temple in New York, USA was vandalized. In September last year, a Hindu temple in Swindon, UK was desecrated and burgled for the fifth time.

Apart from this, there have been several racial attacks on Hindus in recent times, including one shocking Hinduphobic tirade by a Khalistani supporter at a Taco Bell fast food joint in California, USA. Khalistani sympathizers living in the West have also abused and provoked Hindus over the anti-farm law protests.

Meta, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter grilled by US lawmakers over privacy, moderation failures

Fake News via WhatsApp spread by Islamists

The US Senate Homeland Security Committee grilled executives from Meta, TikTok, YouTube and Twitter over privacy and moderation failures on their respective platforms in recent years, saying that they “keep avoiding sharing really very important information with us”.

TikTok COO Vanessa Pappas, Twitter General Manager of Consumer and Revenue, Jay Sullivan, Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox and YouTube Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan testified before the panel late on Wednesday.

“I’ll be honest, I’m frustrated that all of you (who) have a prominent seat at the table when these business decisions are made were not more prepared to speak to specifics about your product development process, even when you are specifically asked if you would bring specific numbers to us today,” lamented committee Chair Senator Gary Peters.

TikTok COO Pappas testified for the first time before lawmakers.

According to TechCrunch, the hearing explored the platforms’ impact on national security and also grilled them on domestic extremism and misinformation to Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) and China.

Senator Alex Padilla questioned Meta’s Cox about the safety efforts outside of the English language.

“In your testimony you state that you have over 40,000 people working on trust and safety issues. How many of those people focus on non English language content and how many of them focus on non US users?” Padilla asked.

Cox didn’t provide an answer.

Twitter’s Sullivan also declined to specifically deny accusations that the company “willfully misrepresented” information given to the US FTC. Twitter is engaged in a little legal battle with Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

“I can tell you, Twitter disputes the allegations,” Sullivan said.

TikTok also refused to agree that the company sends user data to China, including ByteDance employees.

Senator Josh Hawley also asked Pappas about the company’s ties with the Chinese government.

Women in trendy burqas approach girls as young as 8 for ‘modelling assignments’ outside reputed Kolkata girls’ schools, police issues clean chit

0

A few days ago, women clad in trendy burqas, with fashionable sunglasses shielding their eyes, started appearing outside some reputed girls’ schools in Kolkata just when the students were leaving for their homes.

As they waited for school buses or their parents to collect them, these women offered them modelling assignments. One of these schools was where the grand niece of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee studies.

The Kolkata Police initiated a probe after the parents complained. After the investigation, the police gave a clean chit to these women. The report stated that it was all a misunderstanding. The women in question (some of them are allegedly students of well-known south Kolkata colleges) were apparently scouting for talent for fashion shows involving children and teenagers, the report claimed.

However, no explanation was given as to why the talent scouts had to dress up in that particular manner (to conceal their identities) or never considered seeking permission from the parents before approaching the children.

Now, a PIL has been filed in the Calcutta High Court, seeking a thorough probe into such incidents. The petitioner is Vijay Kumar Singhal, a chartered accountant and lawyer by profession who’s also a social activist.

The PIL was filed by his counsel Phiroze Edulji. In the petition, Singhal has mentioned that he was compelled to approach the court as the police response is not at all commensurate with the gravity of the offences committed by the so-called talent scouts.

These women violated several provisions of law and the children were at the risk of being trafficked with the lure of money and fame. One of the children approached is barely 8-year-old.

West Bengal is among the top states in the country from where women are trafficked. It has been estimated that over 40 per cent of such women (most of them minors) are trafficked and sold as sex workers. Recently, the West Bengal government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Maharashtra government to crack down on this racket.

“How could the police give a clean chit to such people who have violated several laws? Approaching a minor without parents’ consent amounts to an attempt to kidnap. Minors can’t be engaged for activities such as acting or modelling without the consent of the parents.

“Even if an event is planned with minors, permission has to be taken from the district magistrate after submitting all the details, including consent from parents. All such laws were flouted but the police gave the accused a clean chit. We demand a thorough probe. We would also want to know who these women were and why they were concealing their identities,” Edulji said after filing the petition.

It has also been claimed by the police that the talent scouts chose to approach the students outside the school premises after one of the schools denied them permission to carry out such activity inside.

This only goes to prove that the organisation involved didn’t have the best interests of the children in mind while offering them modelling assignments, the petition claimed.

Nowadays, thanks to easy access to social media, children are vulnerable, said a professor in the social sciences department of Calcutta University.

“The most vulnerable are teenagers who feel that they are sufficiently old to decide for themselves. That is natural for their age when it is normal to be rebellious. There have been instances when children have accepted offers from strangers without informing their parents. The parents only came to know after the children got into trouble,” he said.

Pakistan rejects flood donation from Bangladesh

1

Pakistan has rejected Bangladesh’s offer to supply humanitarian aid worth 14 million takas (roughly $145,000) as the country continued to suffer great loss during monsoon flooding, according to local media.

On September 1, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief reportedly allocated funds for 10 tonnes of biscuits, 10 tonnes of dry cakes, 1,00,000 water purification tablets, 50,000 packets of oral saline, 5,000 mosquito nets, 2,000 blankets, and 2,000 tents to be sent to Pakistan.

However, it remains to be seen whether Islamabad would accept the friendly and humanitarian Bangladeshi gesture, Khaama Press reported.

According to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Awami League government had always been generous towards humanity and that the authorities concerned had been directed to assist in the relief efforts in Pakistan.

“Pakistan Army is reportedly averse to the proposal of aid from Bangladesh as any such relief assistance may undermine Pakistan’s global image,” she said as per local media.

Pakistan fears that floods might have caused over $40 billion in economic losses and damages as the National Flood Response Coordination Centre (NFRCC) dismissed the initial assessment of $18 billion, Express Tribune reported.

The $40 billion losses were flagged in a flood response centre meeting during discussion on an interim report titled “An Early Assessment of Flood Impact on Pakistan’s Economy”, presented by the Ministry of Finance.

“I would have shot in the head”, Mamata’s scam-accused nephew thinks WB police was not brutal enough against BJP workers

0
mamta banerjee

Trinamool Congress national General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday praised the patience shown by the police in handling the situation during BJP’s march to state secretariat Nabanna on Tuesday, saying that had he been in the place of the police, he would have shot the ‘miscreants’ who resorted to vandalism in the head.

Banerjee, who represents the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, went to the state-run SSKM Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday to meet Debojit Chattopadhyay, an assistant commissioner of police undergoing treatment at the hospital after he was severely injured during the clashes on Tuesday.

“I salute Debojit Chattopadhyay for showing such patience. Had I been at his place, after a police vehicle was torched, I would have shot the miscreants in the head. The police could have easily resorted to firing. But under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the police are restrained,” Abhishek Banerjee said after coming out of the hospital.

Reacting to Banerjee’s statement, state BJP President Sukanta Majumdar said the Trinamool leader is speaking the language of a typical hooligan.

“First the Chief Minister and now her nephew is encouraging people to be trigger-happy,” Majumdar said.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee also ridiculed the leader of opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on his resistance on Tuesday from being handled by women police personnel.

“Probably Adhikari has a fascination towards men. Probably BJP leaders do not accept bribes from women,” Abhishek Banerjee said.

On Tuesday, Adhikari had alleged that women police personnel were deliberately deputed to handle him. He was also seen shouting at the women police personnel trying to put him in a prison van.

“You are a lady. Do not touch my body,” Adhikari was heard shouting.

Reacting to Abhishek Banerjee’s comments, Majumdar said that such remarks reveal his shoddy culture and mindset.

“How can he make such slating comments about the leader of the opposition. Actually, he is out of his mind because of the imminent fear and hence he is losing all control over his language,” Majumdar said.

Abhishek Banerjee is facing a probe by the ED in connection with the coal smuggling scam in the state.
