Hindus Under Attack: A Weekly Roundup of Hate Crimes, Persecution, and Discrimination Against Hindus

Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalised & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.

In this weekly summary for the period from 03 May to 09 May 2026, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken 8more people around the world to this human rights crisis:

Bharat

1) The recent Mumbai knife attack, in which a 31-year-old man, Zaib Zubair Ansari, stabbed two security guards after allegedly asking them to recite the Kalma and attacking them when they couldn’t, was concerning for its ISIS influence. According to reports, the accused expressed a desire to join the Islamic State and had notes with words like ISIS and lone wolf at his residence. The ISIS imprint, though at low levels, shouldn’t be ignored.

2) On this year’s Vishu, April 15, 2026, a restaurant in Kerala’s Cherthala, named Mehr Mandi and Grills, co-owned by Mohammed Shemir, son of a local leader associated with the Indian Union Muslim League, uploaded a poster on its Instagram account showcasing Bhagwan Krishna sitting alongside a plate of chicken mandi (dish known for serving grilled chicken with yellow rice). The post went viral and this became the ‘mandi controversy’. However, the chicken mandi poster was not a ‘designer’s mistake’ as it was being made out to be.

3) The heart-wrenching story of Vivek Kumar, who was in class 5 then, tells how he was kidnapped, forcibly circumcised, forced to study Quran before his rescue after eight years.

4) Bokaro has become the centre of a disturbing case in which an international woman athlete has allegedly accused a man of trapping her in a relationship, blackmailing her with nude photos, forcing her into marriage, and later pressuring her to convert to Islam. The allegation has drawn attention because it involves a Hindu woman who was already known as an athlete and later joined the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), making the case a matter of both personal safety and institutional concern.

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface. Still, the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.

We request all readers to share other anti-Hindu hate crimes that we might have missed in this period in the comments below or by emailing [email protected]. We also solicit support in maintaining the Hindu human rights tracker database.
