Hindus under attack: a weekly roundup of hate crimes, persecution, and discrimination against Hindus

Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalised & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.

In this weekly summary for the period from 04 January to 10 January 2026, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:

Bharat

1) Tension gripped Yellapur town of Uttara Kannada after Ranjitha of Kalamma Nagar, succumbed to injuries sustained in a brutal knife attack allegedly carried out by an Islamist man identified as Rafiq. As per reports, the shocking incident has sparked widespread outrage across the district, with Hindu organizations calling for a complete Yellapur bandh today to protest the killing and demand immediate justice. The case has also triggered suspicion of Love Jihad, further intensifying concern.

2) Tension and outrage have gripped parts of East Midnapore district following a disturbing incident of vandalism reported from the Mahishadal area. Unidentified miscreants allegedly desecrated several under-construction Murtis of Maa Basanti and Devi Saraswati at Kanthal Potti, under the Garkamalpur Panchayat.

3) Tension gripped the Jagajivanram Nagar (JJ Nagar) locality after stones were allegedly pelted at an Om Shakti and Ayyappa Swamy devotees’ procession, leaving two women injured, one of them critically.

4) Bajrang Dal’s storming of a Christian prayer hall in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district has once again exposed the organized, systematic campaign to break Hindu society from within by targeting its weakest sections under the cover of “prayer meetings” and “healing sessions”.

4) In a shocking incident that has alarmed Hindu communities across Uttar Pradesh, a minor Hindu girl from Delhi was discovered with a Muslim youth in a hotel room in Vrindavan, Mathura district. Local police intervened following a tip-off, rescuing the girl and detaining the youth, highlighting yet another instance of systematic targeting of Hindu girls for sexual grooming and conversion to Islam.

5) Bareilly police have arrested 22-year-old Rehan from Kyoladiya village for raping and attempting to forcibly convert a 17-year-old Hindu girl to Islam under the guise of a romantic relationship. The incident unfolded over two years and culminated in the girl’s rescue from a train in Mathura. Rehan planned to take her to Ajmer Dargah for conversion before marriage, but swift police action using mobile tracking prevented it.

Bangladesh

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are relentless and designed to cleanse the religious minority from the country gradually. According to a study by Prof. Abul Barakat of Dhaka University, no Hindus will be left in Bangladesh by 2050 due to systemic and institutionalized persecution. Temple desecration, land grabbing, mob attacks after false blasphemy charges, rape/forced conversion of women, and hate speech are tools used to intimidate and drive Hindus out.

1) Jamaat-e-Islami cadres surrounded the office of the Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Annapurna Debnath with the sole intention of intimidating a constitutional authority into submission. Their slogans were not about law or procedure. They were nakedly ideological and communal. Annapurna Debnath was branded an “ISKCON devotee” and an “Indian agent”, and was openly warned that she would not be allowed to perform her duties in Bangladesh.

2) Sarat Chakraborty Mani, a 40-year-old shopkeeper, was attacked with sharp weapons at Charsindur Bazaar in Palash Upazila of Narsingdi District on the outskirts of Dhaka. Gravely wounded, he died while being rushed to hospital. He was reportedly murdered for refusing Jizya.

3) A minority woman from Kheda Para village in Kaliganj upazila had legally purchased a two-storey house and three decimals of land in the riverbank area of Ward No. 7 for BDT 20 lakh. The property was bought from Shahin and his brother, local residents of the area. The Muslim men began harassing her. Shahin and his associate Hasan forcibly entered the house. The two men then raped the woman, one after the other. After the assault, they demanded BDT 50,000 from her.

World

1) An incident at the Costco @Costco warehouse in Lawrenceville, New Jersey revealed a troubling blind spot in the company’s food sampling program—one that risks violating the religious and ethical dietary practices of many of its members. During a routine visit, Costco’s third-party sampling partner, CDS (Club Demonstration Services), was offering samples of Genius Gourmet’s Sparkling Clear Protein Water. The product contains bovine collagen, a fact not disclosed to members at the sampling station. For many Hindus—who not only follow vegetarian diets but also abstain specifically from bovine derived ingredients—this omission is not a minor oversight. It is a direct conflict with deeply held religious principles.

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface. Still, the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.

We request all readers to share other anti-Hindu hate crimes that we might have missed in this period in the comments below or by emailing [email protected]. We also solicit support in maintaining the Hindu human rights tracker database.
