Hindus under attack: a weekly roundup of hate crimes, persecution, and discrimination against Hindus

Attacks on Hindus and Hindu Dharma, both in Bharat and overseas, are frequent and unrelenting. In many regions of the world, this persecution is like a genocide slowly unfolding before our eyes. For decades, the world has ignored the actual depth and breadth of these attacks, driven by disturbing anti-Hindu bigotry. From murders, forced conversions, land grabs, assault on festivals, desecration of temples and murtis, hate speech, and sexual violence to institutionalized & legal discrimination, Hindus are facing an increasing assault on their very existence along with an unprecedented Hindu hatred.

In this weekly summary for the period from 6 August to 12 August 2023, we hope to provide a snapshot of such crimes and hopefully awaken more people around the world to this human rights crisis:

Bharat

1) “Catch him, hit him, don’t let him run away”, shouted the Muslim mob during Nuh Violence said Bank Manager Ravi Gupta sharing his horrifying experience.

2) On-duty BSF jawans arrested two Bangladeshi cow smugglers along the Bharat-Bangladesh border of Samsherganj of West Bengal’s Murshidabad district. BSF also recovered three cows from their possession. The two arrested Bangladeshis are identified as Sorjul Seikh(24) and Anarul Seikh(24). They both are residents of Chanpai-Nababhanj in Bangladesh.

3) In the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh, a case of religious conversion has come to the fore. A Muslim man has been accused of instigating Hindus in the Paragipurva village of Nighasan area to convert to Islam. The accused who has been identified as Shamsuddin claimed to be an exorcist and would conduct exorcism rituals on Thursdays at the house of a village resident named Hareram.

4) A shocking case eerily similar to the movie The Kerala Story has surfaced in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. A Dalit girl named Munni Dongre, daughter of late Sovind Dogre, resident of Mukam Post, Lawani in Balaghat was pressurised to embrace Islam under the guise of help by her Muslim roommate, Anam Syed from Nariyalkheda, Pipal Square and her co-religionist male friend, Hamid Mian.

5) Indore police arrested Faiz Syed who posed as Karan to lure a Hindu girl, sexually exploited and blackmailed her.

6) Three Hindus were shot during a protest in Sohna against Nuh violence, and a mob led by Hakam and Akram shouting ‘Allah-hu-Akbar’ attacked protestors.

7) Shahrukh Khan, Shoaib, and Masoom stabbed 21-year-old Hrithik to death in Delhi and injured two other Hindu youths.

8) A row erupted in the Palamu district of Jharkhand after a married Hindu woman from the Sarguja region of Chhattisgarh was found to be converted and remarried to a youth identified as Mohammad Sajid of Jharkhand through illegal means.

9) Another temple was vandalised in Tamil Nadu and a ‘mentally unstable’ man was arrested for the act. Bhagwan Murugan, Valli and Devasena were installed at the foothill of the Dhandayuthapani temple located atop a hill in Chettikulam, Perambalur district. On August 7 around 12.30 PM, devotees noticed a man vandalising the murtis with a stone. They immediately stopped him and informed the police.

10) Jalandhar (Rural) police raided the premises of a factory in Dhogri and arrested 13 persons including Rohingya refugees arrested for cattle smuggling. The prime accused Imran Qureshi is absconding. The accused wore tilak and saffron gamchas to hide their identities.

11) FIR in Nuh violence reveals Hindu businessman’s shop was looted and burnt to ashes by a Muslim mob. The complainant has demanded action.

12) In a horrific case from Uttar Pradesh, a 20-year-old girl named Afreen was brutally beaten by her father and her brother for being in a relationship with Sarvesh Sharma. The girl’s father identified as Niyamat Ullah, and her brother Haider Ali killed her and then buried her in a nearby piece of land.

13) Kerala CPM leaders AN Shamseer and MV Govindan refuse to apologize for sacrilegious comment on Bhagwan Ganesha.

14) Bhagwan Ram’s portraits were desecrated by Muslim mobs but a pharmacy run by a Muslim was spared.

15) A gathering of approximately 150-200 individuals congregated outside the police station in Vasco da Gama, Goa, urging for the arrest of the Catholic priest and social activist Bolmax Pereira. The demand stemmed from Pereira’s comments made during a religious celebration regarding Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

16) Uttar Pradesh police filed an FIR against one individual identified as Hanif Ladku for intoxicating a girl with drugs and raping her. The accused also threatened the girl and forced her to convert her religion to Islam. The incident is said to have happened in the Nichlaul region of Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj.

17) Another case of grooming jihad that ended a young Hindu girl’s life was reported from Kerala. Naushid (31) brutally stabbed and killed Reshma Ravi (26) in a hotel room in Kochi.

18) The Tamil Nadu police department has transferred two cops as punishment for asking publishers to remove advertisements of anti-Hindu books sold at a book fair. They reportedly took preemptive action to avoid social unrest after the posters advertising the books went viral on social media.

Pakistan

Abduction, rape, forced conversion, and marriage of minor Hindu girls are common occurrences in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. At least 1000 minority girls suffer such sex slavery every year in Sindh province alone. Apart from this, Pakistani Hindus face systemic and institutionalized discrimination and neglect, such as frequent attacks on Hindu temples, demonization of education curriculum, police and judicial antipathy, denial of fundamental rights, and even untouchability. This latest instance of the brutal rape and murder of a Bheel woman in Pakistan is yet another proof of the pitiable condition of Hindu minorities in Pakistan.

1) Mass forced conversions of Pakistani Hindus to Islam continue unabated and Peer Hafiz Ghulam Mohammad Soho alias “Baba Sai” is the key player in the racket.

2) The entire Hindu Bheel community was expelled from a village in Sindh’s Tharparkar.

Bangladesh

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh are relentless and designed to cleanse the religious minority from the country gradually. According to a study by Prof. Abul Barakat of Dhaka University, no Hindus will be left in Bangladesh by 2050 due to systemic and institutionalized persecution. Temple desecration, land grabbing, mob attacks after false blasphemy charges, rape/forced conversion of women, and hate speech are tools used to intimidate and drive Hindus out.

1) Snigdha Datta Priya(17), a resident of Battoli village under Anowara Police Station under Chattogram district who was abducted was recovered after 21 days and abductor Sajjad Hossain was arrested.

2) Islamists Motaleb Miyan, Nabab Miyan and 4 others attacked Madhusudan Dutta and his family because Madhusudan denied to give any money to them. This incident of brutality and torture was reported from the Kabirhat area in the Noyakhali district.

World

1) Muslim women kept menstrual pads and urinated tissues on the sacred Shivling of their neighbour in Australia’s Sydney.

2) Karnataka HC directed the Centre to obtain a conviction copy of Shailesh Kumar who was sentenced to 15 years in Saudi Arabia in a fabricated ‘blasphemy’ case.

3) Georgetown University research project, an Arab-funded Islamist front, smears the Hindu-American organization CoHNA.

Most hate crimes are driven by anti-Hindu bigotry encoded in certain religious teachings and political ideologies. While the anti-Hindu hate in Islamic countries is evident, there is another subtler form of anti-Hindu sentiment within institutions and the public sphere of ostensibly secular states (like India) that provides an enabling environment for Hinduphobia and hate crimes. This subtle, everyday discrimination can be missed unless one studies prevailing laws and patterns. The gradual ban on firecrackers during Diwali is a good example – it might seem pollution-related on the surface. Still, the double standards at play become apparent when one looks at the larger picture of restrictions on Hindu festivals and the lack of sound reasoning behind the ban.

We request all readers to share other anti-Hindu hate crimes that we might have missed in this period in the comments below or by emailing [email protected]. We also solicit support in maintaining the Hindu human rights tracker database.
