Islamist black-magic horror in Kerala, woman tortured by husband to ‘exorcise evil spirits’

Inhuman evil practices driven by superstitious beliefs are on the rise among Muslims in Kerala, increasing black-magic and sorcery cases. A 25-year-old lady named Fathima was brutally tortured in the name of superstition and witchcraft at Kattanam near Kayamkulam in the Alappuzha district. Incidentally, the atrocities were committed by her husband, his relatives, and a few crooked local sorcerers.

Police arrested her husband, Thirayil Kizhakethil Aneesh (34), from Bharanikavu on the Kollam border, Anish’s nephew Shibu (31), and his wife, Shahina (23). Also detained were sorcerers Imamudheen, 35, of Imamudheen Manzil, Nellimoodu, Kulathupuzha, Kollam, and his brother Anwar Hussain, 28, and Sulaiman, 52, of Bilal Manzil, Thingalkarikkam, Punalur.

The lady is educated and works as a data entry operator at an I.T. company in Infopark, Thiruvananthapuram. The divorced woman married Aneesh recently, and it was her second marriage. Fearing for her life, the victim reported the incident to the police. Nooranad S.H.O. P Sreejith filed an F.I.R. and arrested all six accused.

After the marriage, Fathima detected Aneesh acting strangely. He walked around chanting ‘Duas’ all day and approached her, whispering the same in her ears. Naturally, his behavior scared Fathima, and she moved away emotionally from Aneesh. With that, Aneesh ‘confirmed’ that a ‘Jinn’ had possessed Fathima.

Jinn is a spirit in Islamist mythology, able to appear in human and animal forms and to possess humans. Mental illness and psychological problems are often considered an encounter with Shaitan (Devil) in Islam. Shaitans and jinn are evil spirits in Islam that provoke humans to sin by whispering to their hearts! Muslim holy men like Mullahs, Imams, Sufis, and Maulvis take it as their opportunity and perform exorcisms on individuals believed to be possessed. The victims are subjected to extreme torture, and the law considers such sorcery a gross human rights violation.

Fathima alleged that Aneesh is addicted to superstition. Aneesh and his relatives began to harm her when she resisted his behavior. The accused spread the word that Fathima was mentally ill to avoid suspicion. This was also when Aneesh brought home Sulaiman and his cronies for witchcraft and sorcery.

Nooranad S.H.O. P Sreejith said that the accused has repeatedly tortured the victim since August as part of a witchcraft plot. The first event occurred at the couple’s rented house in Mangaram; the latest was the third attack. In her statement to the police, the victim said that her husband and others attacked her to expel the jinn in August.

When she refused to yield, she was brutally beaten with a rope. Later they inflicted wounds on the body with a long sword and a knife. The exorcism rites were performed in a closed room. Following this, the victim sought treatment at the hospital. When the neighbors inquired about it, the accused spread the word that Fathima was crazy.

After this, Aneesh and Fatima moved to Athikkattukulangara, Nooranad. The rental house is in a secluded area deep inside some rubber plantations and surrounded by forest.

According to the remand report, the attack by the accused on 11 December was with the intent to kill. Fathima was beaten on her knees and her upper body. Under the pretext of taking her to a hospital, she was taken to Shibu’s house. When the woman refused to get out of the car, the accused drenched her body in water and tied her hands with a string. Shahina, the third accused, punched her nose and slapped her several times.

Aneesh, Shahina and Shibu invited the sorcerers over to Shibu’s house. Upon seeing them, Fathima ran out of the house, but Shibu and Aneesh restrained her and dragged her back. Shahina beat Fathima’s mother, who tried to prevent the assault with a broom. To distract the neighbors, the accused shouted that Fathima was mad. When Fathima attempted to escape again, all the accused joined hands and dragged her back. As mentioned in the remand report released by the online portal Marunadan Malayalee, by then, her churidar was torn, and the victim was half naked.

Fathima somehow managed to escape and reached the Nooranad police station on the verge of collapse. Police strategically summoned Aneesh, his relatives, and sorcerers to another place and arrested them. The victim is undergoing treatment at the hospital. All the accused were produced before the Mavelikkara Judicial First Class Magistrate Court and remanded to judicial custody.

S.H.O. Sreejith said that the accused Muslim Blackmagic practitioners used to prey on superstitious locals and make them believe the jinn story. They would then offer to perform sorcery to eliminate the evil spells as a remedy. It is unknown why Sreejith did not initiate legal action against them.

According to the remand report, the accused, who are superstitious, are suspected of having sacrificed their victims earlier to please God. Fathima escaped because she was educated but still endured severe brutality. Astonishingly, this incident happened within weeks of the infamous Muhammad Shafi case rocking Kerala.

Shafi, who practices witchcraft and human sacrifice, lured Bhagaval Singh and his wife, Laila, from Elanthoor in the Pathanamthitta district through Facebook. The active C.P.M. workers and Shafi trapped, brutally mutilated, and murdered at least two women. Strong political influence is suspected behind the Fathima-Aneesh Blackmagic case.

Allegedly, several Islamist holy men are going around in the name of evicting jinn, focusing on the borders between Alappuzha, Kollam, and Pathanamthitta. Lured by their promises, many innocents have become victims of witchcraft.

Madrassa education has changed the perception of many local Muslims, and most of them have become scaringly superstitious. Very few outsiders know what is being taught, which differs from place to place. This does not auger well for modern society as a whole. Unless preemptive action is initiated, such crimes at the hands of Islamist godmen and superstitious Muslims will increase dramatically.

Most media houses failed to mention that the victim’s name was Fathima but promptly reported that the main accused was Aneesh. None reported his last name. Hindus, Christians, and Muslims name their children Aneesh. Such selective journalism has become a trademark of journalists led by anti-nationals aligned with the Kerala Working Journalists Association (KUWJ). They are allegedly out to please their Arab paymasters. Conversion still thrives on ‘superstitions’ among Hindus.
