The DMK government has arrested a BJP councilor for sharing a video allegedly slandering CM MK Stalin. He had reportedly shared a video of the CM speaking, followed by the DMK government’s temple demolitions. BJP alleges that he was arrested in the middle of the night after the DMK legal wing filed a complaint against him.
Subash Suyambu, councilor of Thamaraikulam ward in Kanyakumari district, was arrested by the police for posting a video criticising CM MK Stalin in his Facebook page. Very little information is available as to the contents of the video. TN BJP claims that the video contained Stalin’s speech followed by clippings of temples demolished by the DMK government.
Advocate Siva Koteeswaran of DMK filed a complaint against Subash for posting the video. It is unclear whether Subash himself made it or merely shared the video. Siva Koteeswaran claimed that the video “incited a clash between two communities and could disturb the public peace” and slandered CM Stalin. Based on his complaint Subash was arrested in the nighttime in a hurry.
Local BJP leaders, including Nagercoil MLA MR Gandhi and cadres, staged a protest against the unjust actions of the police. They said that despite many complaints against DMK people slandering PM Modi’s name through fake messages, police haven’t acted on any of them. Recently, the DMK government denied permission to Haindava Seva Sangam to conduct Hindu Religious Conference in Mandaikkadu Bhagavathi temple. The conference has been conducted by the organisation for more than 80 years and this move was seen as an attempt to curb Hindu rights and help Christian missionaries.
This is not the first time the DMK government has arrested people critical of its misgovernance for ridiculous reasons. A Hindu activist cum Kollywood stunt director was arrested for saying that EV Ramasamy’s statues intentionally placed in front of temples should be removed. The DMK government incarcerated YouTuber Maridhas for exposing “Dravidian Stock” handles mocking late CDS Bipin Rawat’s death in one of his videos.
A Tamil nationalist YouTuber was arrested for exposing Periyar EV Ramasamy’s real face by quoting incidents from books published by Periyarist organisations. Viduthalai, Dravidar Kazhagam mouthpiece, threatened Madurai Adheenam, a Shaivite pontiff, with arrest like Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati Swami, for speaking out about corruption in HRCE and DMK’s anti-Hindu moves.
Karthik Gopinath, another Youtuber, was arrested for collecting funds for renovating a temple vandalised allegedly by a Christian convert. HRCE had filed a complaint against him for collecting funds without its permission. BJP executive committee member Sowdha Mani was arrested for merely sharing a video that criticised the DMK government’s double standards in demolishing temples in the name of removing encroachments but leaving illegally built churches. The man in the video criticised a judgment as well, and the Madras High Court refused to grant bail to Sowdha Mani, who had only shared the video.
