Love Jihad in Karnataka: Hindu girl Vismaya marries Islamist Ashfaq amid family’s opposition

In a harrowing ordeal, a Hindu girl, Vismaya, went missing from Ullal on June 30th and was later found to have married Islamist Ashfaq, a man with a criminal background, sparking controversy and opposition from Hindu organizations. Despite efforts to prevent the marriage, including police intervention and court proceedings, Vismaya ultimately chose to marry Ashfaq and converted to Islam, leading to widespread concern and disappointment among her family and Hindu leaders.

Based on the reports from News 18 Kannada, Sharan Pumpwell, a leader of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), recently apologized to Vinod, the father of Vismaya, following the tragic series of events surrounding her disappearance and subsequent marriage to Islamist Ashfaq. Sharan expressed deep regret, stating, “I’m sorry, Mr. Vinod. We couldn’t save your daughter.” Vismaya, a resident of Vidyanagar in Kasaragod, Kerala, was manipulated by an Islamist Ashfaq, leading to their elopement from Ullal on June 30th.

When Vismaya went missing, her father immediately filed a complaint with the Ullal police station. The police eventually located her and placed her in a counseling center. However, Islamist Ashfaq took the matter to the Kerala High Court, filing a petition to have Vismaya returned to him. Following the court’s order, the couple got married, and reports soon emerged that Vismaya had converted to Islam, further complicating the situation. Hindu organizations, including the VHP, expressed their disappointment, as their efforts to prevent the marriage and conversion were unsuccessful.

Father’s heartbreak

Vismaya’s father, Vinod, was left heartbroken after his daughter chose to marry Ashfaq and convert to Islam. During a visit from Hindu organization leaders, including Sharan Pumpwell, they acknowledged their failure to prevent these events. Vinod, visibly emotional, shared his sorrow with the media, stating that despite all efforts, his daughter’s mind could not be changed, leading to the court’s decision to allow Vismaya to go with Ashfaq. Vinod expressed deep distress as he recounted how Vismaya rejected her parents’ pleas and chose to marry Islamist Ashfaq, leaving her family devastated.

The situation began when Vismaya, originally from Vidyanagar, moved to Ullal, Mangalore, to live with her aunt while pursuing a BCA degree. However, financial difficulties forced her family to relocate to Ullal. During her time in Vidyanagar, Vismaya became romantically involved with Islamist Ashfaq. On June 6th, Ashfaq allegedly took Vismaya from Ullal, but she was soon found by the police and returned to her family. However, on June 30th, Islamist Ashfaq reportedly abducted Vismaya again, taking her to Kochi, which led her father to file a kidnapping complaint with the Ullal police station. After being located by the police, Vismaya was placed in a counseling center in Mangalore. Despite her father’s concerns that Vismaya had been brainwashed and was being pressured to convert to Islam in Kerala, Vismaya insisted on leaving with Ashfaq. During this period, Vinod sought help from VHP leaders, pleading with them to save his daughter. Despite all efforts, Vismaya chose to marry Ashfaq and did not return to her family.

VHP leader’s statement on the outcome

Speaking to News18 Kannada, VHP leader Sharan Pumpwell admitted their failure, expressing regret over not being able to bring Vismaya back to her father. Based on the reports from Organiser, he described Islamist Ashfaq as a notorious criminal from Kerala who allegedly used “love jihad” tactics. Despite the counseling sessions in Mangalore, where Vismaya was informed that while her love for Ashfaq wasn’t wrong, his criminal background and existing marriage were serious concerns, she still refused to return to her parents. According to Sharan, Islamist Ashfaq’s influence over Vismaya in just two months was enough to convince her to leave her family and convert.

Several instances of Love Jihad have emerged in Karnataka recently. In Dharawada, a Hindu woman filed a case against her husband for threats and coercion to convert her to Islam. Despite continuous efforts by Hindu organizations like VHP to combat radical Islamists and prevent forced conversions, Islamist groups continue to manipulate and convert Hindu girls.

  1. Anyway, the good thing is that there are plenty of Ashfaqs becoming Ashish and Fatimas becoming Falguni and Ruqaiyyas becoming Rukmani.
