In Uttar Pradesh’s (UP) Gorakhpur district, a case of love jihad has emerged where a girl accused Ahmedabad-based businessman Mohammad Wasim of marrying her by pretending to be Hindu and then pressuring her to convert to Islam. The victim alleged that her in-laws beat and tortured her, but the police claim they have not received any complaint.
The incident began when a boy named Basant Singh sent Raveena a friend request on Facebook. They became friends, which later turned into love. They got married in a temple, after which Basant Singh took her to his home in Ahmedabad.
However, just two days after the marriage, Basant Singh’s first wife arrived and started beating her. Raveena then discovered that Basant Singh’s real name was Wasim, and he had three children. His family then pressured her to convert to Islam.
Before their court marriage, Wasim made Raveena sign a plain paper. During the court marriage, her name was changed to Rabina Bano. Initially, everything seemed fine, but Wasim and his family’s behaviour changed over time. They started pressuring her to convert, but she refused.
Wasim was arrested and sent to jail in a love jihad case. After his release, he promised to buy a flat in her name but took it in his name and the electricity connection in hers. Currently, she is living in the same house. Recently, Wasim and his associates looted all the belongings from the house when the victim was absent. She reported this to the police, but no action was taken.
