Bharatiya and Sri Lankan Tamils set to expand interaction with revival of historic ferry service

A passenger ferry service between Karaikal port in India’s Puducherry and Kankesanthurai port in Jaffna in North Sri Lanka is finally scheduled to start operating by the end of April.

Funded by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), the Sri Lankan Navy, a passenger terminal is being constructed at Kankesanthurai port to facilitate the four hour long ferry service. The ports will require the necessary infrastructure to facilitate customs, immigration and emigration. The vessel is expected to carry around 150 people and will operate only during the day for the first phase of the operation. A round trip is expected to cost around USD 50 , which is around LKR 20000 and INR 6000-7000 and passengers would be able to carry up to 100kg of luggage.

This cross national ferry service, though long anticipated, is not by any means a new venture. In fact it’s a resuscitation of a colonial era transport service between the two countries. The earliest iteration of such a service in popular memory was the Indo-Ceylon Express or Boat Mail- a train and ferry service between Chennai and Colombo, through the Tuticorin port in the 1900’s. Passengers had to buy one ticket for the entire length of the combined journey that would start with them getting on a train in Chennai, getting down at Tuticorin after a journey spanning more than 20 hours and from Tuticorin, taking a boat mail to Colombo.

In 1914, the route from Chennai to Colombo changed to a shorter one through Dhanushkodi and Thalaimannar. However the train-boat mail service met its perilous fate in 1964 when a cyclone washed the passenger train into the sea and destroyed the entire railway infrastructure at Dhanushkodi. Thereafter, the train service only operated till Rameswaram from where the passengers took a ferry to Thalaimannar.

The final blow however was delivered during the 80’s, when this service was finally suspended, owing to the start of the civil war between the majority Sinhala population and the minority Tamils in Sri Lanka that continued for more than 20 years. The mass casualties sustained by the minority Tamils and the grievous loss of life and property faced by them, understandably sparked outrage amongst the Indian Tamils. The Indian government couldn’t risk the conflict in the neighbouring country spilling over to India.

Since the civil war formally ended in 2009, there have been several attempts to restart this cross national transportation service. In June 2011, two years after the end of the civil war, there were talks about resuming ferry services between the two countries after a gap of 30 years. This time, there was to be a direct route- from Tuticorin to Colombo. In fact an Indian vessel called Scotia Prince even carried several hundred people through this route. A Sri Lankan counterpart to the Indian vessel was expected to soon follow, carrying passengers to India, twice a week. However, the popular opinion in South India towards the Sri Lankan government was not conducive to the successful operation of such a service at the time.

In the decade that followed, Sri Lanka went through significant political and economic upheavals. The Sri Lankan government had, since the end of the civil war, been focused on rebuilding the nation from the damage to its economy caused by the protracted ethnic conflict. To that end, it opened up to infrastructural investments from foreign powers like China under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Sri Lanka in fact, became the face of the BRI in South Asia, as India, suspicious of China’s geopolitical ambitions in the region, refused to be a part of the BRI. This also contributed to the souring of relations between India and Sri Lanka in that decade.

However, the nature of Chinese investments and the terms under which it provided loans under the BRI has been the subject of a lot of scrutiny all over the world. Most of the Chinese sponsored projects in Sri Lanka- such as the airport in Mattala city and the Chinese built port city in Colombo, expected to be a thriving economic hub failed to produce the desired outcomes. Furthermore, an important aspect of the Chinese investments in Sri Lanka that is often overlooked is that these projects were solely focused on the development of the Southern part of the Island nation, leaving the northern region and its ports deserted and virtually inoperable.

Today, in the face of the unravelling of many such BRI funded projects in other low and middle income countries like Pakistan and Turkey, many political analysts have suggested that the Chinese loans are one of the main reasons for the debt crisis that Sri Lanka finds itself mired in. Fourteen years after the end of the civil war, the Sri Lankan government is once again facing the prospect of rebuilding its economy from the ashes of a decade’s worth of bad economic decisions.

Consequently, Sri Lanka is now turning to its closest neighbour with the intention of reviving cultural ties and fostering greater economic cooperation. India has expressed interest in investing in projects that would help the long neglected northern Sri Lanka to thrive. In this current climate, the revival of the age old ferry service connecting the South of India to Jaffna in Sri Lanka spells the beginning of a new, more positive and fruitful chapter in India- Sri Lanka bilateral relations.

Jaffna, situated in the north of Sri Lanka, is a stronghold of Tamilians in the country and the cross-national ferry service is expected to be economically beneficial for the region because many Indian citizens are involved in business endeavours in the Jaffna peninsula and the ferry might encourage the expansion of such inter-national business ventures centred around North Sri Lanka. Further, it is also expected to give tourism in both countries a boost because of the shared cultural and religious heritage between the populations of both the countries.

The ferry will make it convenient for people wanting to go on a pilgrimage to Buddhist and Hindu holy sites or visit sites of historical importance to both communities in each other’s countries.

DSP’s court statement exposes police nexus with drug smugglers in Punjab

Deputy Superintendent of Police (retd) Jaswant Singhs confessional statement in the Mohali trial court seems to reveal the contents of the much talked about sealed drug reports that are lying with the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The statement of the DSP who turned approver in the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Prevention) Act (NDPS Act) case registered against inspector (substantial rank head constable) Inderjit Singh on June 12, 2017, exposes the police-smuggler nexus in the illicit drug trafficking in Punjab.

The statement is bound to have direct bearing on the three drug reports submitted by the SIT that were opened and forwarded to the Punjab government for action recently.

A strong effort is afoot in the court of Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ), Mohali, Sandeep Singla, to thwart the opening of the confessional statement of Jaswant Singh recorded before a judicial magistrate under section 164 of CrPc. Advocate Terminder Singh, counsel for accused inspector Inderjit Singh, who is in jail and advocate Amarjit Singh Sukhija, representing accused ASI Ajaib Singh who is out on bail, moved an application in May 2022. They prayed that the approver’s statement may not be opened.

Before the ASJ gives his decision on the issue on the next date of hearing, DSP Jaswant Singh spoke exclusively to indianarrative.com to disclose how the then SSP Tarn Taran, Rajjit Singh Hundal (now AIG NRI cell) and the main accused inspector were allegedly linked inextricably together in the illicit drug racket.

He explained that ad hoc inspector Inderjit Singh with substantial rank of a ‘hawaldar’ (head constable) was not eligible to register an FIR or investigate a case under the NDPS Act. As per the Act an officer not below the rank of a regular Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) could register or investigate a drug case. But the SSP Rajjit Singh posted his friend Inderjit as SHO, CIA police station, Tarn Taran and allowed him to register FIRs under the NDPS Act.

“I pointed out to the SSP that this was illegal and the prosecution will lose cases in courts as Inderjit was not even a regular ASI but Rajjit admonished me and told me to ‘mind your business’,” he recalled.

The DSP said three drug smuggling cases registered at the Sarhali police station under the Tarn Taran police district fell flat in a trial court with the judges noting that the IO (investigating officer i.e. Inderjit Singh) was not competent to register an FIR or to investigate a drug case under the NDPS Act. The accused smugglers from whom large quantities (commercial quantities) of heroin (‘Chitta’) were recovered got acquitted by courts.

“On the directions of the SSP, I used to sign documents of the drug seizures in the capacity of a gazetted officer, as required under the NDPS Act. This landed me in trouble as I was also made a co-accused in the FIR number 1 of 2017, registered at the Special Task Force (STF) police station, Mohali,” he laments.

ADGP Harpreet Singh Sidhu, after taking over as Punjab’s STF chief, decided to review the performance of police and success rate of NDPS cases in courts. He found that Tarn Taran SSP Rajjit Singh Hundal was getting the drug cases investigated by a head constable Inderjit in violation of the NDPS Act. Inderjit was arrested. As much as 4 kgs of ‘chitta’, 3 kgs of smack, 2 AK 47 rifles, a revolver, a pistol and large quantities of live cartridges were recovered from his residence.

STF sources disclose that during interrogation, accused Inderjit alleged that SSP Rajjit Singh Hundal was his partner in crime. It came out that he used to manipulate the ‘challan’ (chargesheet) before submitting it in the trial court after striking a deal with the arrested smugglers. The actual evidence used to be tampered. Instead of ‘chitta’ some other intoxicant used to be sent for forensic lab testing and registration numbers of smugglers’ vehicles used to be wrongly mentioned to weaken the case and help the accused.

Sources also revealed that when inspector Inderjit Singh arrested a smuggler with large quantities of heroin, he would show much less quantity of recovered drugs. The misappropriated quantity of drugs would then be sold-off in the open market through a team of hired peddlers spread throughout Punjab.

Replying to a question, DSP Jaswant Singh said that he met senior officers to explain his conduct and offered to turn approver to help the prosecution. Under the NDPS Act, the state government is empowered and, not the court, to accept and make an accused an approver (‘sarkari gawah’).

ASJ Sandeep Singla, on March 21, 2023 heard the arguments of the counsel for accused opposing opening of DSP Jaswant Singh’s sealed confessional statement and is expected to issue an order on the next date.

WB teachers’ recruitment scam: Arrested promoter Ayan Sil sent Rs. 26 cr to ‘influential’ person, ED tells court

An Enforcement Directorate (ED) counsel told a special court here on Saturday that real estate promoter Ayan Sil, who was arrested in connection with the multi-crore scam in recruiting teaching and non-teaching staff in West Bengal, had transferred hefty scam proceeds to the tune of Rs 26 crore to a highly influential person through an agent.

ED’s counsel Phiroze Edulji told the court that Sil has confessed to transfering the scam proceeds during interrogation by the central agency.

He also said that the investigating officers suspect that this fund transfer was meant for a high-ranking government official associated with the education sector.

“The investigation so far has revealed that Sil collected about Rs 45 crore from around 1,000 candidates appearing for the recruitment examinations for teaching and non-teaching posts, a major portion of which was transferred to as many as 30 bank accounts in his name.

“The investigating officers have so far got information about 40 of his bank accounts, eight residential apartments, five premium vehicles, one petrol pump and one hotel. All these were fruits of the scam proceeds,” Edulji submitted in the court.

Edulji also claimed that Sil was directly responsible for the tampering of the optical mark recognition (OMR) sheets, through which candidates genuinely scoring higher marks were disqualified where “right option marks” in the OMR sheets by them were changed to “wrong option marks”.

Sil’s counsel moved the bail plea on behalf of his client and pleaded that he be released on bail under any condition. However, the court rejected the application and remanded the accused to judicial custody till April 11.

A criminal from Rajasthan, who was an accused in the murder of cricketer Suresh Raina’s relatives in Punjab in 2020, was killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Police in Shahpur village of Muzaffarnagar district on Saturday, police said.

The accused, identified as Rashid a.k.a. Sipahiya, carried a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head and had nearly a dozen criminal cases registered against him.

Vinay Kumar Gautam, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Budhana), said, “Rashid was hiding in Moradabad and had come to Muzaffarnagar to execute his next crime. He was intercepted but he opened fire and was killed in retaliatory firing on Saturday. Station House Officer of Shahpur, Bablu Kumar, sustained a bullet injury. Rashid’s associate managed to escape.”

Muzaffarnagar Senior Superintendent of Police, Sanjeev Suman, said, “We are now scanning records to collect more information about his activities.”

In August 2020, Raina’s uncle Ashok Kumar, his son Kaushal Kumar, wife Asha Rani and two more members of the family were attacked by the ‘Chhah Maar gang’ (part of the notorious Bawariya gang) from Uttar Pradesh at Tharial in Punjab’s Pathankot district.

Kumar died on the spot while his wife and son succumbed to injuries later at a hospital.

The gang of robbers had allegedly barged into their house and beaten up the family with sticks before decamping with cash and other valuables.

Following the incident, an FIR was registered against unidentified men at Shahpur Kandi police station in Pathankot under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting with weapons), 149 (offence committed in prosecution of common object), 458 (housebreaking), 459 (grievous injury due to housebreaking) and 460 (causing death due to housebreaking).

Two more sections 302 (murder) and 307 (murder attempt) were later added to the FIR.

Raina had pulled out from the 2020 IPL season after hearing the news of the attack on his relatives, and had requested the then Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to arrest the culprits soon.

In July 2021, police had arrested the gang’s alleged mastermind, Chajju from Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly.

In September 2022, two more men were nabbed following a gun battle in Muzaffarnagar. The police later came to know that the men were wanted by the Punjab Police in connection with the cricketer’s relatives’ murder.

The police spokesman said that more than 12 accused related to this particular case have been arrested so far.

Stones pelted at a Hindu New Year bike rally in Jaipur, 11 Muslim youth detained

Rajasthan Police have detained 11 Muslim youths for pelting stones at the Hindu Ranbheri bike rally which was being taken out in Jaipur Rural on last Sunday, March 26.

The state government has seemingly deployed police force to provide security for the rally, but they failed to control the mob, as was evident from video footage that emerged. Soon, an additional police force was called and the Muslim stone pelters were chased away and 11 of the them were arrested.

The stone pelting occurred when the rally reached Tala village of Raiser area of Jamwa Ramgarh on the occasion of Hindu New Year.

The Hindu Ranbheri bike rally started from Khel Maidan Chandwaji at around 10.15 a.m. on Sunday and passed through different areas. However, around 3 p.m., some miscreants pelted stones near Tala Johra of Raiser police station area. A case has been registered at Raiser police station by Sadhuram Jat who was present in the rally.

Meanwhile, the Rajasthan BJP has protested against this incident. BJP’s MP Colonel Rajyavardhan Rathore tweeted a video of the incident and raised questions on the functioning of the Congress government.

He said that, “Hindu rally attacked in Jaipur’s Jamva Ramgarh today. PFI terrorist mentality has flourished under Congress rule. This government also shows leniency on those who pelt stones and violence on the events of the Hindu community. These incidents are the result of this appeasement. The administration should act promptly against such madrassas and miscreants.”

The video shows that many of the skull-cap wearing stone pelters appear to be teens, and there is a high probability that they were mobilized by some local madrasa/Jamaat body. Such brazen acts of mob violence in presence of police do not appear possible without collusion of local administration.

BJP MLA and party spokesperson Ramlal Sharma attacked the Congress government over the anti-Hindu violence in Jaipur district.

He said, “There was a sudden attack on the saffron rally by people of a particular community which pelted stones after which the police arrested 11 people. Out of those 11 people, there are many people who are suspicious and are not residents of the village or even from nearby villages. This indicates that this attack has been done in a planned way by the people of the particular community. Bharatiya Janata Party demands action as this is not the first incident in Rajasthan, such incidents have happened at many places in the state due to the promotion of appeasement politics after the Congress government came to power.”

“Police need to take strict action to curb these incidents and if strict action is not taken then it is difficult to curb these incidents. That’s why the government should take action against the culprits soon. Police are trying to register cases against innocent people, if police register cases against innocent people in this way, then Bharatiya Janata Party is not going to keep quiet,” he added.

Islamists resort to usual tricks, shouted ‘Islamophobia’

Meanwhile, the Islamic radicals did what they are known for, using any possible opportunity to play their victim card and shout ‘Islamophobia’. Here an Islamic news portal Millat Times and Radio Mirchi RJ Sayema, who was shockingly endorsed by the US Embassy in India recently as a ‘trailblazer and positive change maker’, tweeted about this issue, and they portrayed it as if Hindus were the ones who attacked the Muslims.

However, arrests made by Rajasthan Police, witness statements and the video evidence destroyed this Islamist propaganda. At the same time, many eyewitnesses who were participating in this rally confirmed that when the cops and the people in the rally tried to stop the attackers from stone pelting, it only emboldened them more. Multiple people stated that despite the provocation, the participants in the rally didn’t react and moved ahead peacefully.

SIA chargesheet nails Rs 40 lakh illegal foreign funding to Kashmir editor

1

The Jammu and Kashmir Police’s State Investigation Agency (SIA) has claimed in a chargesheet that the detained Kashmiri journalist and editor of the online magazine ‘Kashmir Wallah’ Peerzada Fahad Shah received an amount of Rs 95.59 lakh from open donations and subscriptions out of which over Rs 40 lakh came to him from foreign countries in violation of the law.

The chargesheet filed in a designated court in Jammu in October 2022 claims that the money was received by the editor through three bank accounts of the online publications in violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) as it included unauthorised foreign funding to the tune of Rs 40 lakh.

On 16 March, 2023, the designated court for SIA and NIA cases in Jammu framed charges against the detained journalist Fahad Shah and Abdul Aala Fazili, the author of a disputed article in the online publication. The counsels of the accused claim the charges are without substance and decided to challenge the same in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court.

The Union Territory investigation agency has further charged Shah with collecting domestic and foreign funds which, according to it, could be used for subversive purposes. According to the SIA, the subscription model followed by digital media platforms could be used by “unscrupulous elements” to pump money and foment trouble in Jammu and Kashmir.

The SIA has said that Shah’s digital magazine had been “operating on a subscription base model where the readers subscribe and pay for a certain fee”. “Unscrupulous elements can utilise this route to fund an entity to foment trouble in a region and carry out propaganda in its own interest,” the SIA has alleged and asserted that “this part is under investigation”.

According to the SIA, Shah operated three particular bank accounts through which the subscriptions worth Rs 95.59 lakh, including the foreign funding worth Rs 40 lakh, was raised in violation of the FCRA. It claimed that an amount of Rs 10.59 lakh was received through one account from the Paris-based Reporters Sans Frontiers (RSF) in 2020-21.

The chargesheet claimed that the money was transferred in three installments even though the account was not eligible to receive foreign contributions as it was not registered under the provisions of FCRA. “Another account allegedly received approximately Rs 58 lakh, out of which Rs 30 lakh is foreign contribution by way of subscription payment… which is suspicious,” it stated.

“Reporters Sans Frontiers also popularly called reporters without borders is an organisation which supports press freedom all over the world, while in reality the entity is involved in subverting the democratic freedoms all over the world,” the SIA said in its chargesheet against the detained editor and his contributor.

Booked for an article titled ‘The shackles of slavery will break’, as published in ‘Kashmir Wallah’ on 6 November 2011, Shah and Fazili were initially charged with “glorifying terrorism and secessionism and selectively promoting Pakistan’s and the separatists’ agenda and narrative through the media”. They were arrested in February-April 2022 and booked under different provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Indian Penal Code.

While Shah was arrested on 5 February, 2022, for “glorifying militancy, spreading fake news, and inciting the public against law and order”, Fazili was arrested on 17 April, 2022, for his “highly provocative and seditious” article in the online magazine. They have been lodged in a jail in Jammu.

The SIA chargesheet claimed that oral, documentary and material evidence collected during the course of investigations established that Shah and Fazili “resurrected a platform for reviving the narrative in support of the terrorist and separatist ecosystem” under a “well-directed conspiracy and Pakistan’s efforts”.

“Under this plan, select anti-India elements within the media, guided from across, have held several secret meetings in which the adversary instructed” them “to form media platforms, especially digital platforms that are inexpensive but have wider reach; form and float associations that can conceal and camouflage such persons and screen their connections with and funding from hostile foreign agencies and terrorist/secessionist entities,” the chargesheet claimed.

The agency claimed that on 4 April, 2022, it received the printout of the “highly provocative and seditious article” from a discreet but reliable source. However, the article was not available on the portal domain as it had been “surreptitiously removed” with an attempt to destroy the evidence. Consequently, a preservation request was made to the domain provider on 11 April, 2022 and the article re-appeared on the website. This evidence was retrieved by a technical expert in presence of the Executive Magistrate Ist Class on 12 April 2022.

Calling them “contaminated and compromised media persons”, the SIA has charged Shah and his opinion contributor Fazili, then a PhD scholar with the Department of Pharmacology of the University of Kashmir, with pursuing the objective to “create, sustain, and spread disaffection, hatred and enmity against the Indian State”. Fazili, it has pointed out, continued to receive a government scholarship while pursuing his PhD and simultaneously siding with the adversary and becoming “part of a conspiracy to undermine the government of the day”.

Shah’s ‘Kashmir Walla’ is an online news magazine. The title was allotted to a Srinagar-based woman by the Registrar of Newspapers in India over a decade back. However, it did not complete the pertinent formalities of printing as per rules within 6 months of the allotment of title and thus failed to register with the Government of Jammu and Kashmir. “It has only obtained a title in 2010 or 2011 but never completed the formalities of declaration and registration. So, it is not recognised and does not exist in our records,” said an officer in the J&K Government’s Department of Information.

Sri Hanuman – an epitome of devotion, strength & courage

2
hanuman

Sri Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on Chaitra Pournami (Pournami/Purnima tithi of the Hindu month of Chaitra) every year in northern and western Bharat according to both the Amanta and Purnimanta Hindu calendar. Interestingly, Hanumangarhi Mandir in Ayodhya observes Hanuman Jayanti a day before Deepawali as it is said that Prabhu Ram blessed Hanuman to be worshipped before Him.

The southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu celebrate Hanuman Jayanti at different times of the year based on regional beliefs and calendars followed in these states.

Story of Sri Hanuman

Bhagwan Hanuman was born on Mangalwar (Tuesday) just after sunrise on the Purnima tithi of Chaitra during Chitra nakshatra and Mesha Lagna. He is the son of Vanara king Kesari who ruled Sumeru and his wife Anjana. He is the Anshavatar of Bhagwan Shiva and one of the Ashta Chiranjeevis.

Pawan Deva carried Him to the womb of Anjana and hence He is also known as Vayuputra. He is called Anjaneya since He is the son of Mata Anjana. His immense strength makes Him Bajrang Bali.

He is the epitome of intelligence, presence of mind, courage, righteousness, strength, and an eloquent orator. Shri Ram calls Bajrang Bali one who is learned and knows all the essentials of speaking correctly. He has knowledge of all the Vedas.

He is known as Hanuman as His Hanu jaw was broken by Indradev’s vajra. The story goes that once Mata Anjana had gone to the forest and baby Anjaneya began to cry out of hunger. He then spotted the rising sun and flew towards it assuming it to be some fruit. Rahu who was on his way to eclipse the sun saw a child flying towards Surya and complained to Indradev who used his vajra to strike a blow.

Vayudev was extremely angered by Indra’s act and went into a cave with the stricken child. Vayu is the life force and in his absence all beings began to suffer. Devas approached Brahmadev who revived the child, and all the devas showered their blessings on Maruti.

hanuman

These boons gave Him immense powers such as the ability to change His size at will, great speed, enviable mental powers, and no curses that could affect Him, and He is unconquerable. He could also control fire, wind, sun, water, and poison.

He lived through the Treta Yug serving Shri Ram and decided to reside on the earth where Shri Ram would be remembered, till the end of time. He visited His brother Bhima during Dwapar Yug and was present in the Dhvaja of the Pandavas camp.

Forms of Shri Hanuman

1) Prasanna Anjaneya: Parashar Samhita’s fifteenth chapter mentions this form. Kshatriya Raja Vijaya worshipped Bhagwan to get rid of his earthly bonds. Prasanna Anjaneya freed the king from his bondage to materialistic pleasures.

2) Veer Maruti: Maruti as the courageous one is depicted as battle-ready holding a Gada (mace) and at times with a demon crushed under His feet.

3) Das Maruti: Here He is seen paying obeisance to Prabhu Shri Ram with folded hands.

4) Dakshinmukhi Hanuman: Maruti facing south direction and the right side is a popular form in temples in several cities of Maharashtra. This form is said to be an aggressive form of Bhagwan emitting energy. People pray to this form to overcome the adverse effects of distressing energies.

5) Panchmukhi Hanuman: This is one of the popular forms of Anjaneya. He assumed this form to kill Mahiravana (Ahiravana as per some sources) who was an ally of Ravan and king of Patallok. When Shri Ram and Shri Laxman were lured to Patallok by Mahiravana disguised as Ravan’s brother Vibhishan, Maruti went to Patal looking for them.

Mahiravana’s life was concealed in five lamps placed in five different directions that had to be extinguished simultaneously. Hanuman assumed the Panchamukhi form to slay Mahiravana. The five faces are Shri Varaha (north-facing), Shri Narasimha (south-facing), Shri Garuda (west-facing), Shri Hanuman (east-facing) and Shri Hayagriva (upwards/skyward-facing).

Dwatrimshath Bhuja Maruti (32-armed), Vimshati Bhuja Hanuman (20-armed), Ashtadasa Bhuja Hanuman (18-armed), and Chaturbhuja Anjaneya (4-armed) are the other forms of Anjaneya.

Famous Hanuman Mandirs

Some of the famous Hanuman mandirs in Bharat are:

1) Hanumangarhi, Ayodhya (UP): This mandir is situated on the right bank of River Saryu. A flight of 76 stairs leads devotees to the mandir where six inches long vigraha has been consecrated.

2)Sankat Mochan, Varanasi (UP): Bhagwan Tulsidas is said to have established this mandir and consecrated the murti of Anjaneya.

3) Balaji Hanuman Mandir, Mehendipur (Rajasthan): This mandir is in Rajasthan’s Dausa District. The vigraha is said to be swayambu and the pond near the murti’s feet never dries up.

4) Hanumandhara, Chitrakoot (UP): Here Bhagwan stands against a mountain with a stream flowing by touching the murti.

5) Hanuman Mandir, Salasar (Rajasthan): This mandir is in Churu District’s Salasar village. The vigraha is said to have been unearthed by a farmer while he was strolling in a field. The murti is unique with a beard and moustache.

6) Anjaneya Kovil, Namakkal (Tamil Nadu): This mandir is believed to be 1000 to 2000 years old. The vigraha is 18 feet tall and is seen holding a japmala in His hand with a sword in the waist.

District Judge comes under cloud in Indian Air Force airfield grabbing case

0

The role played by a district judicial officer in dealing with the multi-crore scam pertaining to the grabbing of an Indian Air Force airfield in Ferozepur has raised eyebrows in Punjabs legal circles.

The standing counsel for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) on March 6, 2023, informed the Ferozepur Civil Judge Jasvir Singh that “vendor, vendees, revenue authorities… few officials of the judiciary are involved… in the massive fraud.”

The MoD was opposing the fraudsters’ execution petition based on and emanating from a surreptitiously procured decree from the court of Additional District Judge Sachin Sharma in 2019.

Giving a backgrounder of the airfield, MoD’s counsel told the court that the British government acquired 982.02 acres of land for an all-weather airfield in 1942. The compensation for the acquired land was duly paid to the owners as there were no pending claims. During Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s tenure, a scheme to “Grow More” food grains was started. There was food scarcity in the country. All the vacant parts of the 982.02 acres of the Ferozepur airfield land were leased-out to about 40 farming families titling them as farm managers.

Later, after the green revolution, the lessees were asked to vacate the land. The government had to initiate legal action under the Public Premises (eviction) Act 1971. Finally, all the lessee farm managers who tilled the land were evicted on Supreme Courts orders.

Interestingly, in 1997, Usha Ansal, the General Power of Attorney (GPA) holder, given by Madan Mohan Lal Ansal, sold off 15 acres of land, out of the airfield’s total 982.02 acres. It happened by manipulating records in connivance with revenue officials. The involvement of the then SDM DPS Kharbanda, who now stands promoted to the IAS, is abundantly clear in records. Madan Mohan Lal Ansal died in 1991, thereby turning the GPA infructuous. Yet sale deeds were registered in 1997 and mutation (Intikal) was done in 2001.

Armed with the mutations, the 5-new owners, Jagir Singh, Dara Singh (one) Dara Singh (two) Manjit Kaur, Surjit Kaur and Mukhtiar Singh, moved the civil court demanding that the land be restored to them as the Army had illegally and forcibly evicted them in 2006. The court of Gurpreet Kaur, JMIC, dismissed their petition in 2014.

The five fraudsters filed an appeal in the court of Additional District Judge (ADJ) K.K.Goyal, which was dismissed in default on March 21, 2017, on the grounds of non-appearance on 40 dates fixed for hearings. Then, to get the case revived, a restoration application (legally called Civil Miscellaneous (CM) application), was moved before the same judge. But again, nobody appeared in court for over 2 years.

Later, ADJ Sachin Sharma replaced K. K. Goyal on transfer. Sharma took up the restoration application on April 30, 2019, for the first time. After summer vacation in June, the ADJ held the next hearing on August 4, 2019, though the date announced and fixed in the open court was August 5. On August 4, without deciding on the restoration application, Sachin Sharma summoned the complete record of the dismissed case. According to legal experts, the judge could not have called for the complete record without reviving (restoring) a dead case file.

On August 19, the counsel for MoD moved an application before ADJ Sachin Sharma, praying that a spot inspection be done of the airfield to establish who was in possession of the land and to see if any crop was standing on the 15 acres of the concrete airstrip bearing khasra number 71. It was requested that a team comprising revenue officials, engineers and a court-authorised local commissioner inspect the spot before reviving a dismissed case.

Setting a record of sorts, ADJ Sachin Sharma dismissed the MoD request on August 20 in a hearing before lunch, terming it premature. In the after lunch’s inconclusive hearing, he writes on file, “to come up on August 24 for further hearing on the main appeal.” On August 24, he wrote, fixed for arguments on the restoration application on August 25.

On the next hearing on August 25, fixed for arguments on the restoration application, ADJ Sharma first allowed the Civil Miscellaneous application, restoring a dismissed case. And, after lunch the same day, allowed the main appeal.

He did not give MoD any opportunity to argue against allowing the appeal. The matter was decided in the absence of counsel. The judge, in his order, directed the MoD to vacate and hand over the 15 acres of costly land to the 5 new owners.

Indianarrative.com got in touch with ADJ Sachin Sharma, now posted in Chandigarh. Sharma said that he could not speak without the permission of the High Court’s Registrar (General), Ramesh Kumar Dimri. He did not reply to some queries emerging from the case proceedings that were sent on his WhatsApp phone number.

This correspondent emailed the same queries to Registrar Dimri seeking answers from the ADJ. Even after 3-days of waiting, Dimri did not get back.
