West Bengal: “Will be driven out from the area if you join BJP’S rally”, posters found in Hooghly threatening BJP workers

0

Before the grand rally of Central Home Minister Amit Shah in Kolkata, the political tension was rising in West Bengal. Now, unknown miscreants put up posters threatening BJP workers not to join the rally.

The posters reportedly were found in Chunchura’s Keota Battala locality. The posters were put on BJP’s posters, which were placed before. In the posters, it has been written, “Centre is not giving the money of Awas Project(PMAY). Those will be driven out from the area who will attend the rally. Jay Bangla”.

After the posters came to light, political tensions were seen in the area. The TMC and the opposition party, BJP, have blamed each other. Denying any involvement of its party members, local TMC MLA Asit Majumdar said, “BJP itself has done this and is blaming TMC. BJP has done this to get media attention.”

On the other hand, local BJP leaders have blamed TMC for terrorising its party workers, putting up posters so that they can’t join the rally.

Notably, the slogan ‘Jay Bangla’ is officially used by TMC in rallies and programs.

Terrorism on the rise across the world, but UN unable to fight it resolutely

In the 15th year after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack by Pakistan-based terrorists the world has seen another attack patterned on it on a far larger scale in Israel, yet the world organisation is unable to resolutely fight it.

The Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) proposed by India in 1996 is languishing in limbo because some countries want their favoured terrorists to be glorified as “freedom fighters”.

The Security Council’s committee on issuing sanctions against terrorists cannot declare Sajid Mir, the mastermind of 26/11, a global terrorist because he is under the protection of China.

And, a resolution adopted by the General Assembly on the Gaza conflict that followed the 7/10 Hamas attack would not even name the terrorist group and condemn it because of the opposition by several countries which defeated an amendment proposed by Canada to hold it responsible.

India abstained on the resolution’s voting on the resolution because it did not explicitly condemn terrorism.

Speaking after the vote, India’s Deputy Permanent Representative Yojna Patel firmly laid out New Delhi’s position: “The world should not buy into any justification of terror acts. Let us keep aside differences, unite, and adopt a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism.”

The justification of terrorism has prevented the adoption of the CCIT and Pakistan presents the prime example of this ideology.

In opposing the CCIT, its Permanent Representative Munir Akram has said that there is a clear differentiation between “acts of terrorism” and “the legitimate struggles for self-determination of people under foreign and colonial occupation” — a justification in his view for terrorism by Pakistan-based and supported terrorist organisations that should be exempt from counter-terrorism action through a global pact.

He said that it was the position of the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation, the group of Muslim nations.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has dismissed attempts to differentiate between acts of terrorism and terrorists.

During a visit to Mumbai last year, he visited the memorial to the 26/11 victims and called terrorism an “absolute evil” that “no reasons, no pretexts, no causes, no grievances” can justify it.

A day after the 26/11 attack began, the Security Council in what is becoming an increasingly rare show of unanimity proclaimed its members’ “determination to combat all forms of terrorism, in accordance with its responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations”.

It also declared “that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed”.

Ban Ki-moon, who was then the Secretary-General, said that he was determined that the UN plays a lead role in dealing with terrorism.

He said that the perpetrators of the Mumbai attack should be brought to justice.

As the world stood aghast at the terrorism in Mumbai, the Council’s sanctions committee on terrorism within weeks declared the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) a global terrorist organisation and imposed sanctions on it.

Three of its leaders, the boss Hafiz Saeed, operations head Zakir Rehman Lakvi, and finance chief Haji Mohammed Ashraf were also declared international terrorists by the panel that is formally known as the “1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee” for number of the resolution setting it up and had their assets frozen and travels banned.

But after that, China began blocking sanctions against other LeT operatives involved in the Mumbai terror attack.

In January, it relented and allowed sanctions to be imposed on Abdul Rehman Makki, but as recently as June, it blocked action against Sajid Mir, the mastermind of the 26/10 attack.

India’s Permanent Representative Ruchira Kamboj told the Council bluntly that its failure to deal with terrorists challenges its credibility.

She told the Council in September, “The working methods of the UNSC (Security Council) Sanctions Committees continue to dent the credibility of the UN Security Council.”

During its tenure as an elected member of the Council that concluded at the end of last year, India headed its Counter-Terrorism Committee.

Kamboj, as the panel’s chair, convened a session in Mumbai, where the 15 members of the Council can see and feel the impact of 26/11, and in New Delhi.

Survivors of the attack spoke directly to the Council members in Mumbai about their trauma and their determination to not be defeated and appealed for action against terrorism.

One of those addressing the Council in Mumbai through a video link was Moishe Holzberg, who as a two-year-old baby survived the LeT attack on a Jewish centre in Mumbai with the help of his Indian nanny while the terrorists killed his parents.

He said, “It is very important that you find new ways to counter terrorism so that no one will have to go through what I have gone through.”

But a year later, like they had in India swooping in with unconventional tactics, terrorists struck his homeland with far greater fury and focused more directly on Jews as the world stood by.

Three illegal immigrants were arrested from a village near the India-Bangladesh International Border in Murshidabad district on Sunday, said police.

They were arrested in the Kamarpara village under Ranitala Police station in Murshidabad. The villagers on Sunday morning traced three unknown persons loitering in the area. Being suspicious of their body-language, the villagers informed the local police station.

The police intercepted them and during interrogation it was revealed that all of them were Bangladeshi residents who had entered India illegally after crossing the barbed fencing at the International Borders in the district. None of them had valid documents or papers for coming to India.

The three persons arrested have been identified as Jalem Sheikh, Noor Alam and Iran Sheikh. All of them are residents of Rajsahi in Bangladesh. Four mobile SIM cards were recovered from their possessions.

The police have arrested and booked them under the charge of illegal immigration and criminal conspiracy. The police were interrogating them to find out the reasons for entering India illegally.

Delhi-like stir by farmers begins at Chandigarh borders

Thousands of protesting farmers from Punjab and Haryana on Sunday started gathering on the outskirts of the joint capital of both states here as part of a three-day protest over demands which the Centre had conceded on December 9, 2021.

They warned that they have come prepared for a long haul. Many of them brought along vegetables, sacks of flour and lentils and cooking oil on their tractor-trailers.

The farmer unions under the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) have given a nationwide call for the protest to mark the third anniversary of the historic ‘Dilli Chalo’ agitation of farmers and non-fulfillment of demands like promise of minimum support price (MSP) guarantee law.

This time it has given ‘Chandigarh Chalo’ agitation to lodge their protest in front of the Raj Bhavans of Punjab and Haryana in Chandigarh.

The protesting farmers, comprising men and women — both young and old — and school and college students riding tractor-trailers, cars and motorcycles, have been assembling on the borders of Mohali in Punjab and Panchkula in Haryana.

Police of both states and Chandigarh have been deployed in strength and sealed borders to prevent the forceful entry of the farmers to Chandigarh.

However, there was no report of any violence or the use of force to disperse the protesters.

The assembled farmers have pitched up their tents and parked their vehicles, largely tractor-trailers, on roads leading to the city for their stay. Even they set up makeshift kitchens to serve food to the protesters.

Union Minister recommends CBI probe into midday meal ‘irregularities’ in West Bengal

Union Minister of State for Education Dr Subhas Sarkar on Saturday said that he has recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged irregularities in implementation of the midday meal scheme in state-run schools in West Bengal.

His announcement comes just a day after Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari launched a scathing attack against the state government alleging massive irregularities in implementation of the scheme in the state.

Sarkar claimed that following successive investigations by the central field research teams, several irregularities have been identified in the implementation of the programme.

“So we had no other option but to recommend a CBI probe in the matter,” he said.

However, state Education Minister Bratya Basu countered all the allegations in the matter and also questioned the manner in which the central investigation team submitted its report.

Accordingly to him, the central field research team submitted its report on this count in an unbelievably hurried manner and that too without the signature of the state government representative in the team.

Basu also challenged Adhikari’s allegation that there was loss of Rs 100 crore in the scheme.

“In fact, the state government saved Rs 18.80 crore allotted under this scheme. Anyway, we welcome any kind of probe in the matter,” he said.

In April, the central investigation team submitted its report where it claimed Rs 100 crore losses. The report also mentioned that a much lesser amount of food that what is scheduled under the midday meal scheme was provided in the state.
