Nayan Kumar Sarkar, a 22-year-old Hindu youth, was lynched to death in the Sondah village of Nandanalpur union in Kumarkhali, in Bangladesh’s Kushtia. He was a student of the Alauddin Ahmed Degree College. The victim’s father informs that Nayan was in a relationship with a Muslim girl from an influential family.
The girl is the niece of former UP member Abdur Razzak, an influential person in the area. The girl’s family had threatened Nayan with dire consequences multiple times before. They wanted him to end his relationship with the girl. But Nayan and the girl continued their relationship.
The deceased victim’s family, including his father Jagesh Kumar Sarkar, and relatives, allege that the family members of the Muslim girl have killed their son. According to local sources and police, Nayan had gone missing since midnight on Saturday, July 16. His family members searched all night but couldn’t find him. In the early hours of Sunday morning, his family members got the news that Nayan was lying on the roadside in Sondah Nahunpara field. He was seriously injured.
Hearing this, his family members rushed to the spot. They also hurried him to Kushtia General Hospital. Ashraful Alam, the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Kushtia General Hospital, stated that Nayan was in a critical condition when he was admitted to the hospital around 6 AM. As his condition was deteriorating, shortly after admission, he was asked to be transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
But, Nayan died on the way to the Dhaka hospital in the afternoon. Nayan’s sister Lata Rani has alleged that the perpetrators had called her brother and then beat him to death with a hammer. “We want justice,” she cries.
Nandanalpur Union Parishad member Shahinur Rahman informed that the victim was lying on the side of the road in the morning. He was smeared in blood and had injuries all over his body. Kumarkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamruzzaman Talukder said, “I have been informed about the matter. The body has been sent to the morgue. Everything will be known after the autopsy.” On the other hand, Abdur Razzak and his brother’s family have absconded since the incident.
This incident comes at the heels of the murder of a 19-year-old Hindu nurse in Bangladesh’s Kishoreganj district. Police have also arrested Rima’s Muslim employer Hanifur Rahman, in connection with the murder. It is alleged that he had raped the victim before killing him.
Brutality against the Hindus has been on a constant rise in the Islamist country lately. Despite its tall claims of being secular, the Hasina dispensation has failed miserably in giving Bangladeshi Hindus any security o assurance.
