Mythbuster #1: The Myth of Uneducated Śūdra

“Mythbuster #1: The Myth of Uneducated Śūdra”, Sarvotthāna Substack, 15 Jun 2026.

“The left-wing and pseudo right-wing camps such as RSS have made this an unquestionable fact that the wicked Brahmins oppressed śūdras and never let them study and had education reserved only for their own class. However, on an honest study of the śāstras and history, we find that reality is miles away.

Looking at śāstras first, our eyes go to the “Śūdradharmatattvaprakāśa” (Enlightener on the Dharma of the Śūdra) of Śrī Kamalākarabhaṭṭa (कमलाकरभट्ट) of Kāśī. In this monumental work, this rite of passage can clearly be seen described when the ācārya clearly states— “atha vidyārambhaḥ” (now we describe the vidyārambha rite for the Śūdra) in the second prakaraṇa; this clarifies that the scriptures describe vidyārambha and hence education as a mandatory rite of passage for the Śūdra, after which his formal education in his father’s craft, grammar, logic, astronomy, astrology, medicine etc. could begin.

He is often seen throughout the epic advising different characters and giving discourses on many topics such as politics, economics, ethics etc. His Famous work being the Viduranīti, comprising chapters 33-40 of the Udyogaparva of Mahābhārata.

    2. Dharmavyādha (धर्मव्याध) : A hunter by jāti, steadfast in his dharma and a great scholar. Topics covered are Karma, ethics, Duty, service etc. Compiled under the Vyādhagītā, part of the Vanaparva.

    3. Komaṭi Vema (कोमटि वेम) : A 14th century king, and a commentator on the Amarukaśataka, who wrote a commentary named “śriṅgāradīpikā”. He was from the Reddy clan and proudly proclaimed his śūdra origin in his many inscriptions………..”
