Shree Kshetra Kuruvapur, Karnataka

Kuruvapur is situated in Raichur district, Karnataka State. Bhagwan Dattatreya ‘s first incarnation in Kaliyug is Sripada Vallabha (1320-1352 AD) who performed penance for about 16 years at Kuruvapur for Gnana and Vairagya siddhi. Sripada Vallabha’s birth place is in Pithapuram, East Godavari Dist., Andhra Pradesh. Sripada Vallabha is born to Appalaraju Sarma and Sumathi.

Kuruvapur is termed as Gurudweepa in Skanda Purana. Skanda Purana also says that several yogis and siddhas of Himalaya visited Kuruvapur to have darshan of Bhagwan Dattatreya. This small hillock is surrounded by Krishna River. Tembe Swamy Maharaj (Sri Vasudevananda Saraswathi) performed “chaturmasya vrata” here in the year 1911. The disciples of Tembe Swamy Sri Rangaavadhoota, Gunavani Maharaj also performed penance at this place.

Sripada Vallabha paduka mandir, 1000 years bainan tree (vata vriksha), the cave where Tembe swamy maharaj performed penance, oudumbar vriksha (fig tree), Sreepada mudras on other side of the river, Datta mandir at Sri Vithal Baba ashram are the important places to visit here. Vithal Baba ashram is on the other side of the bank of Krishna River, which comes in Palamur district, Telangana.

Narasimha Saraswati, Manik Prabhu, Swami Samarth and Shirdi Sai Baba  are believed to be other incarnations of Bhagwan Dattatreya that followed Sripada Srivallabha. Sripada Srivallabha took sanyas at the age of 16 years, and lived in his physical form only until the age of 32. Some of the noted holy places that Sripada Srivallabha visited during his lifetime are Varanasi (Kashi),  Badarikashram, Gokarna, Srisailam and Kuruvapuram.

Shripad Vallabha stayed in Kurupuram much of his life. The religious significance of Kurupuram is duly mentioned in the book Shri Guru Charitra and other holy books associated with Shri Dattatreya.  Sripada Srivallabha stayed at Kuruvapuram and performed several miracles at this place. These miracles were compiled into a book named “Sreepada Sreevallabha Charitaamrutamu” by his devotee Shankar Bhat. Sreepada Sreevallabha left his mortal body on Ashweeja bahula Dwadasi (Hastha star) in Krishna River at Kuruvapur. This day is known as “GURU DWADASI.”

From Hyderabad one can reach Kuruvapuram by road (around 180 KMs) via Mahaboob nagar (Palamur) Maktal, and Sri Vallabha puram (18 KMs from Maktal). People can visit the Vithal Baba ashram on the bank of the Krishna River (Telangana) and from there go by motor boat to Kuruvapuram (less than half KM) which is on the other side of Krishna River that comes in Raichur dist., Karnataka.  People travelling from Karnataka normally come via Raichur (30 KMs) and reach Kuruvapur from Aathkur by boat.

In the past the pilgrims used to travel by small boats (known as butti or teppa) that were manually operated. Now there are motor boats available to carry the pilgrims in safer manner.  There are crocodiles in this river and during rainy season the river is full of waters. The pristine beauty of Krishna River surrounded by the serene nature, mountains, flora and fauna are a sight to be enjoyed, which cannot be described in words.

Bhagwan Dattatreya is an avatar of trimurthis- Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Bhagwan Dattatreya is considered as an ocean of knowledge and exalted spirituality. In the Datta sampradaya, Dattatreya is worshipped as “SADGURU” and as Avadhoota. The Sandilyopanishad clearly declares that Bhagwan Dattatreya is the supreme reality and is the cause of everything that is created. The life of Dattatreya shows us that “giving” selflessly is the true renunciation/sacrifice.

Apart from Kuruvapur, Narsobawadi (around22 KMs from Sangli, Maharashtra), Amarapur (also known as Amareshwar, around 23 KMs from Sangli), Gangapur (Glubarga Dist., Karnataka), Mahur (around 125 KMs from Nanded, Maharashtra), Pithapuram (around 20 KMs from Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh) are the places of worship for the people who follow Datta sampradaya.
