“In Manipur’s verdant valleys and lush undulating hills, ethnic tensions have severely strained social cohesion over the past two years, leaving a wound that will take time to heal. Violence erupted in May 2023 and exposed deep fractures between communities, pushing the state into one of its most prolonged crises in recent decades.
The Kuki-Meitei conflict is distinctive.
Unlike historical riots such as the 1984 anti-Sikh violence in Delhi, the 1992-93 Mumbai disturbances, the 2002 Gujarat events, the 2013 Muzaffarnagar clashes, or the 1990s Naga-Kuki conflicts which claimed over 1,000 lives and displaced nearly 100,000 people, the current crisis has escalated into organised demands for territorial division. Earlier conflicts, however tragic, largely channelled outrage into demands for justice and rehabilitation within the constitutional framework rather than calls for territorial fragmentation……”
