The ruling CPI-M in Kerala suffered a jolt when two of its local leaders at Vadakara in Kozhikode district were arrested in the wee hours of Monday by the police team probing the rape of a female CPM worker.
Earlier, it was reported that the two accused were absconding after police moved to arrest them following a medical examination of the victim on Sunday. The police have now begun the questioning of the two and they will be produced before a local court.
This issue has been simmering in the party unit at Vadakara for a while and finding that things are not moving, the victim approached the local police. Here too things did not move at the desired pace and only after the opposition parties — BJP and the Congress took up the issue, things started to move. Police registered a case against the accused only on Saturday. They have been booked under IPC Sections 376 (2) (for gangrape), 354 (A), 109 and 376 (for rape).
MLA K.K. Rema, widow of Revolutionary Marxist Party founder late T. P. Chandrasekharan who was murdered as per a conspiracy hatched by CPM’s Kannur and Kozhikode units, has alleged that the police failed to act on time because of the pressure from CPM leadership.
Baburaj was the CPM secretary of Mulliyeri branch in Maniyur and Lijeesh, DYFI (CPM’s youth wing) Pathiyarakkara area secretary. Both were expelled from the party only after the police booked them in the case.
According to the complainant, who is a married woman and a CPM worker, Baburaj barged into her house three months ago, threatened and raped her. Subsequently, he sexually exploited her several times again by blackmailing that he would reveal the incident to her husband. Later, Lijeesh raped her after threatening that he would make the incident public, the complaint stated.
Shockingly, even though the charges in this case are about gang-rape and the accused were arrested post the victim’s medical exam thereby lending even more credence to her charge, news agency IANS chose to run the below headline –
Now, there is a sea of difference between harassment and rape, and we can rest assured that IANS journalists are aware of this difference. So why did they choose to water down the gravity of this crime in the headline, which anyone working in media will tell you often forms the first and last impression in a reader’s mind.
The answer is simple – CPM is deemed a ‘progressive, secular’ party by our establishment elites. The terror unleashed by CPM in every sphere of life in Kerala, from colleges, journalism, trade union extortion (aka ‘Nokku Kooli’), to politics; the rampant corruption as visible from gold smuggling racket involving the CM’s office – all this is ignored, because the CPM and all other so-called ‘secular outfits’ are juxtaposed against the real enemy of the Nehruvian secular state – the Hindus. It is the same mindset that has kept TMC and Mamata Banerjee safe from even the mildest of criticism despite the brutal post-poll pogrom she has unleashed on Hindu voters of BJP.
And it is for this reason that any party which is viewed as sympathetic to Hindus is demonized, its every action scrutinized under a microscope, even blatantly manufactured issues are played up in service of the ‘secular cause’. Just reflect on how Shiv Sena was treated in media discourse before it broke off from BJP in 2019, and how it is treated today.
And to be clear, IANS is still ‘better’ than bigger news agencies like PTI who have an even more overt anti-Hindu bias. But this is where Bharat’s English-language media stands in 2021 – where the rape of a CPM worker by her own party leaders is reported as mere ‘harassment’. Is it any wonder that the horror stories of Bengal have been all but buried by this compromised, rabidly anti-Hindu mainstream media?
