Surathkal police have arrested an Islamist shop owner on charges of sexually harassing a minor boy, registering a POCSO case, and placing the accused in judicial custody. As per Daijiworld, the accused Islamist has been identified as Mohammad Ismail, proprietor of Hani Fashion Shop & General Store located near Chokkabettu Jumma Masjid in Surathkal.
Boy locked inside and assaulted
According to police sources, a Class 6 student visited the shop on Saturday to buy chocolates. The accused allegedly locked the child inside a room, tied his hands and legs with a rope, and sexually harassed him. The traumatized boy informed his mother, who immediately filed a complaint with the Surathkal police.
Case registered under POCSO and BNS
Following the complaint, a case was registered under Sections 351(2) and 127(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with provisions of the POCSO Act.
Inspector Pramod Kumar and his team acted promptly, arresting Ismail and producing him before the court. The court subsequently remanded him to judicial custody.
Political links emerge
During the investigation, it has also come to light that the accused is a local office bearer of a political party, raising concerns within the community. Further inquiry into his background and activities is underway. Police have stated that a detailed investigation will continue to ensure that every angle of the case is examined and all those responsible are brought to justice.
This incident is a stark reminder that sexual violence and predatory behavior spare no gender; even young boys are now falling victim to shocking levels of brutality. What makes this case even more disturbing is the aggressive and radicalized mindset displayed by individuals who believe they can intimidate, harm, and violate minors without consequence.
For many in Mangaluru, especially Hindu families who once felt secure in these neighborhoods, such cases have created an atmosphere of growing fear and distrust. The freedom with which children could earlier move around is now overshadowed by concerns about Islamic extremist behavior exhibited by a few dangerous individuals.
In this context, the responsibility of the authorities becomes even more critical. Swift, uncompromising action is essential, both to deliver justice to the victim and to send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
