Mehboobi arrested for allegedly suffocating 40-day-old grandson over anger at granddaughter’s marriage to a Hindu man: KA

A shocking and disturbing incident has emerged from Chelur in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district, where an Islamist woman has been arrested for allegedly murdering her 40-day-old grandson. According to police investigations, the accused reportedly committed the crime out of anger over her granddaughter marrying a Hindu man against her wishes.

As per OpIndia reports, the accused, identified as Mehboobi, allegedly suffocated the infant to death on 24 December 2025 at her residence in Chelur. At the time of the incident, the newborn was staying with his mother at his grandmother’s house following his birth.

Initially, Mehboobi told family members that the baby had suddenly developed breathing complications and died due to illness. Trusting her explanation, the family proceeded with the last rites without suspecting foul play.

However, the child’s mother later began to suspect that something was amiss. According to police sources, she became suspicious after observing Mehboobi’s behavior following the baby’s death. Acting on her doubts, she approached the Chelur police and filed a complaint demanding a thorough investigation.

Following the complaint, police initiated a detailed probe and obtained legal permission to exhume the infant’s body for a postmortem examination. The exhumation was carried out in the presence of officials, and the remains were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for further analysis.

The forensic report revealed that the infant had died due to suffocation, contradicting the earlier claim that the child had died from natural causes.

During the investigation, police noticed inconsistencies in Mehboobi’s statements, which raised further suspicion. Subsequent inquiries revealed that the accused was deeply unhappy with her granddaughter’s interfaith marriage to a Hindu man and had reportedly expressed resentment over the birth of a child from that marriage.

Police have arrested Mehboobi and produced her before a court, which has remanded her to judicial custody. Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing to determine whether any other individuals were aware of the crime or assisted in covering it up.

Many Islamist groups often claim to stand for tolerance and coexistence. However, when incidents occur where Muslims themselves are questioned or criticized, the same groups frequently react with intolerance and demand that others remain silent.

At the same time, cases involving deception, coercion, or forced religious conversion targeting Hindu women have repeatedly raised concerns within the Hindu community. These incidents have created a growing feeling among many Hindus that their concerns are dismissed or ignored.

There is an increasing perception that when such issues are raised, they are quickly labelled as communal or divisive, while the underlying problems are not addressed honestly. Hindus must remain aware, vigilant, and vocal about protecting their rights, culture, and community.
