DNA test nails Naqi Hasan and his brother for gang-rape of minor girl, 28 years later

A DNA test of the child conceived by a girl after she was repeatedly raped by two Muslim brothers in 1994, when she was just 12, matched with one of the accused, police said. The two accused are absconding since last week and a police team has been formed to apprehend them.

The FIR against the accused — Naqi Hasan and his brother Guddu — was lodged in March last year following a court order.

Superintendent of Police (city) Sanjay Kumar told PTI, “The DNA test was conducted on the court’s order. Samples of the victim’s son and two accused were examined. The report confirmed that DNA of Guddu matches with the victim’s son. Based on this information we have formed a team to arrest the accused.”

The girl was staying in Shahjahanpur with her married sister back in 1994 and the accused lived in the same neighbourhood and were older to her. One day, when the sister and her husband were out for work, Naqi Hasan entered the house and raped the minor. The next day his brother Guddu raped her.

The family members came to know about the rapes when she got pregnant, and she gave birth to a child the same year. It is not clear if any complaint/FIR was lodged at the time, or whether the family hushed up the matter. The baby was given up for adoption and was adopted by a couple from Hardoi. Later, the woman got married but when the husband came to know about the rape incident, he left her.

The woman lived alone for several years till her son came in touch with her a couple of years ago and learnt about the crime. He supported and encouraged her to lodge an FIR. The woman first approached police regarding the matter and later filed a petition in local court seeking registration of an FIR.

This again reflects poorly on our police machinery that even in this day and age, complainants of serious crimes like rape or abduction have to run from pillar to post just to get FIRs lodged. Especially when the accused are from the so-called minority community, police tend to freeze for fear of being hounded by ‘secular’ politicians, media and activist-NGO mafia as we have seen in multiple cases – exhibit 1, exhibit 2, exhibit 3.

The accused brothers run a small business in Shahjahanpur and still live in the same locality, according to police. “They are absconding since last week and a police team has been formed to arrest them,” said the officer.
