Times Now crew slapped and pushed by AAP member; Journalists assaulted at AAP office amid probe into ₹7 Crore foreign funding

Media personnel from Times Now were subjected to physical assault at the office of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi. The attack has exposed the opposition, known for repeatedly labelling Prime Minister Narendra Modi as authoritarian.

The incident occurred as journalists were covering the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) report concerning AAP, specifically related to Akanksha Khurana’s investigation into the party’s foreign funding. Additionally, the cameraman accompanying her was also subjected to physical handling, and his camera was damaged during the altercation.

Reports from OpIndia suggest that Aam Aadmi Party’s Chief Media Coordinator, Vikas Kumar, orchestrated this misconduct. The journalists were questioning foreign funding, which seemed to irk the party leaders. Alongside physical assaults, the journalists were subjected to verbal abuse, and the camera screen was shattered. This entire ordeal was captured on camera.

It’s worth noting that Arvind Kejriwal’s party received ₹7.08 crore in foreign funding between 2014 and 2022. The ED has also forwarded a report to the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding this matter. The report explicitly states that Arvind Kejriwal’s party violated the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act (FCRA) and the Representation of the People Act (RPA) of 1951.

Nakia Kumar from ‘Times Now’ revealed that this isn’t the first time such behavior has occurred towards their channel’s journalists. Following their exposure of the “Sheeshmahal” scandal, their journalist, Bhavna Kishore, was also unjustly imprisoned.

According to reports from Times Now, the National Union of Journalists India (NUJI) has urged for strict action against those responsible for assaulting Times Now video journalist Akanksha Khajuria by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers. NUJI National President Ras Bihari stated that Times Now journalists were inquiring about AAP party corruption and scandals. It appears that the anger of AAP members was directed towards the journalist due to their discontent with the party’s scrutiny.

Bihari emphasized that democracy permits freedom to expose political party corruption and interrogate their leaders, asserting the media’s right to pose questions. He suggested that the repeated disdain of AAP leaders towards the media may stem from their dwindling support base. Bihari further indicated that instances of media personnel being attacked would be addressed by the Press Council of India.

Statement by the video Journalist

Recalling the assault, a video journalist from Times Now recounted the harrowing experience, stating that AAP workers violently seized the cable, proceeded to vandalize the camera, and then struck him on the head. “While engaging with AAP workers, they forcefully grabbed the cable, damaging the camera in the process. Subsequently, they wielded the cable as a weapon, hitting me on the head,” she recounted.

Times Now exposed an alleged foreign funding scandal involving AAP

In a revelation by Times Now on Monday, it was uncovered that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) purportedly received Rs 7.08 crore in foreign donations between 2014 and 2022. The report, citing an Enforcement Directorate (ED) dossier sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs, alleges that the Arvind Kejriwal-led party violated the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) and the Representation of People Act (RPA). According to FCRA regulations, political parties are prohibited from accepting foreign funds.

Under the investigative series titled ‘Operation Black Dollar’ conducted by Times Now, it was revealed that the AAP allegedly received funds from countries including Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Australia. Notably, several donors used the same credit cards for these transactions. The ED dossier further accuses AAP member Pathak of misappropriating foreign funding. The foreign donations were reportedly directly deposited into the AAP’s IDBI bank account, as per the dossier’s findings.

The AAP government, known for its criticisms of the BJP, finds itself under scrutiny as Delhi CM Kejriwal faces allegations of involvement in a liquor scam investigated by ED officials. The public backlash against Kejriwal and his administration has been severe since these revelations came to light. However, as the media begins to report on the truth behind the AAP, alarming incidents of assaults on media officials have surfaced, indicating a concerning trend. It is imperative that authorities take swift action to address these attacks and ensure the safety of journalists.

Kolkata, May 22 (IANS) Launching a scathing attack against the Calcutta High Court’s order nixing OBC certificates issued in the state after 2010, West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, on Wednesday said that her government would not accept it and would challenge it in a higher court.

“I do not accept this order of the Calcutta High Court. Recently the Calcutta High Court also cancelled around 26,000 jobs in state-run schools. I did not accept that order as well.

“I will not take any names. Whoever passed it, but I must say that this order favours the BJP. Hence we will not accept it. The reservation for OBCs will continue,” CM Mamata Banerjee said while addressing an election meeting at Hardaha in North 24 Parganas District on Wednesday afternoon.

The Division Bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Rajasekhar Mantha had passed the order on OBC certificate cancellation earlier in the day.

The Chief Minister linked the Calcutta High Court’s order with the recent statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the Congress and other allies of the Opposition INDIA bloc, if voted to power, have plans to reduce the quota for OBCs and give the same to Muslims.

“The Prime Minister is claiming for the last few days that the minorities might snatch the quota of the OBCs. Is that possible constitutionally? The minorities can never do that,” CM Banerjee said.

She said that the OBC quota lists were prepared after conducting a survey under the chairmanship of Upendra Nath Biswas, a retired IPS officer and former minister in her Cabinet.

“Even then there was a case in court. But they got defeated. This time the same thing will happen,” she said.

Tension has arisen in Karnataka’s Vijayapur as Muslims opposed the construction of a community hall by the SC (‘Dalit’) community near a mosque. The conflict centres around the proposed development of a community centre by young members of the SC community near the Ikhlas Khan Mosque near Managuli Agasi.

Based on the reports from OpIndia, Muslim leaders have objected to the construction, citing the mosque’s status as a protected site under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). They argue that any construction within this protected zone requires ASI’s permission. This dispute led to a confrontation between youths from both communities, creating a temporarily heated atmosphere.

The SC community questioned the protesters, stating, “Who are you to prevent the construction of a community building on government land in Vijayapura city?”

Based on the reports from Udayavani, members of the SC community asserted their intention to proceed with the construction. At the same time, the Muslim community insisted, “If you want to construct any building near the mosque in Vijayapur, you should get permission from the Indian Archeology Department, not just the government.” This disagreement led to a heated altercation between the groups.

As the dispute intensified, police arrived, anticipating trouble. Despite their presence, the leaders of both groups continued their clash, ignoring the authorities. Eventually, Mallaya Mathapathy, the CPI of Golagummata Police Station, and other officials pacified the situation. They dispersed the crowd and instructed the leaders of both communities to provide the necessary documents.

Instances of communal tensions are escalating in Karnataka as Islamist groups are reportedly seeking reasons to confront and oppose Hindus. The recent surge in communal incidents in Karnataka has raised concerns within the Hindu community, highlighting a worrisome trend of targeting Hindus and Hindu dharma.

Kolkata, May 22 (IANS) The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday cancelled all the Other Backward Class (OBC) certificates issued in West Bengal after 2010.

The ruling by the division bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Rajasekhar Mantha effectively means that all OBC certificates issued by the current Trinamool Congress regime that came to power in 2011 now stand cancelled.

Following the order, over 5,00,000 OBC certificates issued since 2010 cannot be used for seeking reservations for jobs now.

However, there is an exemption for those who have already secured jobs using the certificates issued during that period, as the latest order will have no impact on them, the bench ruled.

While passing the order, the bench observed that since the certificates issued after 2010 were not issued in accordance with the prescribed legal procedures, they stand cancelled.

The bench ruled that the state Assembly will now decide who all are eligible to apply for OBC certificates. It also said that the West Bengal Backward Class Commission will now decide the list of caste categories that can be included in the OBC list.

As per the rule, the Commission recommends the list and forwards the same to the state Assembly which takes the final decision on this count.

In the past, there have been several complaints relating to irregularities in issuing OBC certificates in West Bengal, as a result of which several eligible persons were deprived of the certificates as several non-eligible candidates were included in the list.

A case of ‘love jihad’ has come to light from Nepal’s Jhapa district. A youth named Firoz Mansuri kidnapped a minor Hindu girl one and a half months ago and took her with him. The victim’s family complained to the police on 24 March 2024. A total of 7 people, including Ohid, Majudin Khatun, Sakina Khatun and Alam, have been named in the complaint. The Nepali police have not yet been able to recover the victim.

According to the report by OpIndia, the victim’s mother has claimed that Mansuri is hiding in some part of Bharat with her daughter. It is alleged that Mansuri is calling the victim’s family and pressuring them to withdraw the case.

According to the complaint copy, the incident is from the Kanchankaval area of the Jhapa district. The victim’s Hindu family living here has complained to the police. In the complaint, the victim’s father has said that his daughter was kidnapped by Firoz Mansuri on 15 March 2024. The victim is said to be a minor. Mansuri is a resident of Ward No. 7 of Mirchaiya Municipality in the Siraha district of Nepal. The accused was assisted by his mother, father, other family members and some acquaintances in kidnapping the girl at around 8:30 in the day.

The victim’s family says that some of their neighbours are also involved in the kidnapping of their daughter. These neighbours are accused of attacking the victim’s family in front of the police administration. It is said that despite the complaint, no action has been taken against those attackers yet. Two suspects named Parvati and Shyam Giri are accused of supporting Mansuri and his family. The victim’s family has expressed the fear of something untoward happening to their daughter and has appealed to the administration to recover her as soon as possible.

The victim’s mother alleges threats

Mansuri’s aunt has threatened the victim’s family that they will hide the girl and keep her hostage until she becomes an adult. After she becomes an adult, the victim will be married off to Firoz after conversion to Islam. There is pressure on the girl’s family to withdraw the case. Only then will the matter be discussed further. However, the victim’s family refused to withdraw the case. They have expressed apprehension that their daughter has been hidden somewhere in Bharat.

The girl met Firoz Mansuri while he was selling baskets

The victim’s mother has stated that Mansuri’s family makes baskets. The accused used to roam from village to village to sell these baskets. It is suspected that the two met during this time. Later, both started talking on social media. The victim’s mother said that her daughter is religious in nature, but despite this, she fell into Mansuri’s clutches. Talking to OpIndia, Rajesh Yadav, National President of Hindu Samrat Sena, said that he has demanded strict action against the accused from the Nepalese administration. Rajesh Yadav has warned of serious agitations if the girl is not recovered soon.

It is important to note that there have been several reported cases of love jihad coming from Nepal. In April this year, two Hindu girls, aged 15 and 14, were forcefully abducted from their residence in Nepal’s Dhanusha by a group comprising six Islamist men and two Islamist women. In March, a Muslim youth from Nepal, Mohammad Israfil Ansari alias Dara Ansari, tricked a 16-year-old Nepali Hindu girl into a relationship on Instagram by pretending to be Hindu.
