Communists – rice procurement, ‘managing’ inflation & policy hypocrisy

Theoretically, Communist governments should see virtually zero inflation because prices for almost all goods and services were set by state agencies and changed only rarely. In Kerala, they have taken the art of inflation to the next level. They are teaching Keralites how a few capitalists and crony communist leaders can easily fleece the ‘highly literate’ Marxists who voted them to power. The weapon of choice is rice, synonymous with Malayalees and a staple of each Keralite home worldwide.

It is well-known that rice consumption increases the risk of developing diabetes compared to wheat. A high literacy rate in Kerala does not translate to health literacy. Kerala is the diabetes capital of Bharat, with a prevalence as high as 20% ─ double the national average of 8%.

Notably, 80% of diabetic patients die from heart disease. Diabetes affects not only blood sugar but also our blood pressure and explains why Kerala has the highest rate of heart disease in Bharat, a rate double that of the US and six times higher than Japan and China. That does not prevent the average Keralite from consuming rice thrice and sometimes four times daily.

Media reported that rice prices in Kerala are unlikely to cool anytime soon despite the efforts of the administration to procure more quantity from outside the state. Even as the supply of ‘Jaya’ variety rice from Andhra Pradesh will get delayed by another five months, other varieties will likely arrive in the Kerala markets after a month. The Jaya variety is widely consumed, and it is doubted that its rates per kilo will hit a century soon.

Communists vs. Farm Laws

In the past, we have seen the price of some food items rise dramatically, for example, onion prices recently. We have also seen that such inflation affects Bharat as a whole. Communists have joined with anti-nationals and protested violently. Their cyber wing has unleashed cheap trolls aimed at the central government.

This time, nothing of that sort is happening in Kerala against Pinarayi Vijayan and his crony ministers. Notably, the rice rates are not rising anywhere else in Bharat currently. Kerala also has acres of rice cultivation, but we still cannot provide enough for local consumption. But why?

GR Anil, Kerala Food and Civil Supplies Minister, has ‘stepped in’ and is now in Andhra Pradesh to procure rice and chili directly. The Civil Supplies corporations of both states have reached a pact to start the supply of other rice varieties, including ‘Surekha,’ besides grocery items like Bengal gram, red cow pea, coriander, dried red chili, and Kashmiri chili from next month onwards.

Reportedly the AP minister informed his Kerala counterpart that both states signed an agreement regarding the same. Even if rice rates remain high after the five months are over, AP will supply rice as per today’s agreed rates. Kerala demanded that both states keep intermediaries out of this whole deal. Does this entire farm trade sound familiar?

In simple terms, what Andhra and Kerala have agreed to do is contract farming. Two parties sign an agreement: X farms and sell his produce to Y on a future date. Kerala does not want mediators. Isn’t this the same policy that the central government tried its best to introduce as a farm bill?

Back then, the Congress, communists, the radical Popular Front of India (PFI) in Kerala, and the local parties in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana vehemently opposed the farm bills. Wasn’t their protests the reason why PM Modi withdrew that bill? Well, it was not just the ideological differences but monetary too. Farmers now understand, but the damage has been done.

Jaya Rice Variety

Interestingly, after meeting with Anil, Andhra Pradesh Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs minister VK Nageswara Rao said that Andhra does not cultivate the rice brand (Jaya) anymore. (In fact, they have never farmed Jaya since 1965!). He added that AP will resume the cultivation of ‘Jaya’ and has procured the seeds. Kerala’s demand for supply of 3,840 tons a month will be met only after the harvest five months from now.

Jaya, Surekha, and Jyothi account for most of the rice consumed by the people in Kerala. At least 50 percent of rice sold is the Jaya variety. Jyothi is supplied from neighboring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. So what is being sold as Jaya in Kerala currently, and that too at almost 70 rupees per kilo? Anil evaded a direct reply when asked this question.

In late-July 2017, a week after an in-principle agreement between AP and Kerala, leftist media claimed ‘confusion’ over the supply of Jaya variety of rice. Newly elected communists led by then Kerala civil supplies minister P. Thilothaman had visited AP to procure rice for the Onam festival in September. Special Chief Secretary (Agriculture, Civil Supplies) B. Rajasekhar said, “Jaya is an ancient variety. It is not being cultivated now. What they (Kerala) refer to as Jaya could be MTU 3626. (Bondalu in local parlance). We asked them to send a few samples to compare it with the rice grown here.”

Cultivation of Jaya, a variety from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), was introduced in 1965. It was discontinued long ago, and many other high-yield types were introduced. The samples turned out to be Bondalu, and Bondalu rice has minimal demand.

However, Andhra Pradesh Rice Millers Association (APRMA) and Upland Area Rice Millers Association (UARMA) disagreed. APRMA president Gummadi Venkateswara Rao and UARMA president Valluri Suribabu continued to contend that “Jaya variety of rice is being sent to Kerala.”

Back then, the media might have been confused, but the communists and analysts had no doubts about what had happened. It does not take an economist to determine that middlemen were at play. Now, let us look at what has happened over the last few months regarding rice cultivation and harvesting in Kerala.

In early September, 79,225 farmers registered for Kerala government paddy procurement through Supplyco, and 55,269 were from Palakkad. Supplyco is a Government of Kerala-owned company that procures farm produce directly from farmers at the Minimum Support Price declared by the Government of Kerala. Supplyco then gives the procured paddy to contracted rice mills for milling and packing. The resultant rice is supposed to be distributed through the Public Distribution System in the state.

Local Self-Government Minister and former speaker MB Rajesh promised that Kerala would pay Rs 28.20 per kg of paddy and claimed that Tamil Nadu is offering only Rs 21 to its farmers. Rajesh comfortably failed to mention that private mill owners were yet to sign the agreement. The last date for signing the contract was August 30.

Communists vs. Farmers

Muthalamthode Mani, state general secretary of Desiya Karshaka Samajam, was blunt in his assessment. While harvesting the first paddy crop had begun, the mill owners were coming up with lame excuses, he said. Backroom deals between the communists and the morally corrupt mill owners have been going on for many years. He lamented that the government conspires with the private mill owners and ration dealers.

Unlike in other states where sizeable cold storage service providers provide several distinct temperature zones ranging from -30°C to +30°C, Kerala still has none. Farm bills would have incentivized big players to create this much needed agro-infrastructure, but that’s another story. Local farmers do not have places to store harvested paddy. They keep the paddy in sacks in the fields and helplessly watch as rain brings moisture and germination.

Delaying the procurement announcement forced the paddy farmers to sell their produce at Rs 16 to Rs 18 per kilogram to the same mill owners instead of the procurement price of Rs 28.20 announced this season. Supplyco too lifted paddy with excess moisture but at throwaway rates. Liquor barons, too, allegedly swooped down like vultures and made a killing.

Banks pay the paddy farmers for the procurement based on Paddy Receipt Sheets (PRS) issued by Supplyco. Banks record this payment as a loan given to the farmer. When Supplyco withholds payment to the banks, the loan becomes a farmer’s debt. Supplyco has arrears worth Rs 954.46 crore and Rs 2,046.84 crore towards banks in the financial years 2020-21 and 2021-22, respectively. It also owes 8.5 percent as interest to the banks.

These arrears are affecting the CIBIL scores of the farmers, and they cannot avail of new loans. Supplyco was supposed to procure one kg paddy at Rs 28.20. Of this, Rs 19.40 has to be given by the union government and Rs 8.80 by the state government. But for two years, both funds have remained mismanaged and unallocated.

About 72 percent of the farmers in Kerala are reeling under a debt burden, per a survey conducted by an independent farmers organization – Kerala Independent Farmers Association (KIFA). The average debt of a farmer in Kerala was estimated to be Rs 5.46 lakh in August. Kerala is a state whose ‘off-budget’ borrowings average around Rs.150 crores each day.

In June, the state Government informed the State Assembly that the cumulative debt, as of March 2022, stood at ₹3,32,291 crore. This figure was a giant leap from ₹1,89,768.55 crore in 2016-17. An interim report found that salaries, pensions, and interest payments form around 70% of the total revenue expenditure of the state. The report, prepared by the team led by Centre for Development Studies director Sunil Mani, has found that the average salary of a state government employee has almost doubled over the last seven years, from Rs 25,458 per month in 2011-12 to Rs 49, 657 per month in 2018-19.

Yet, the communist government that lists and borrows through Masala Bonds at the London Stock Exchange does not have the finances to settle dues of local farmers! Having failed local farmers, communist ministers are now state-hopping to procure rice.

Communists Vs. Mill Owners

Mill owners and the communist government reached a ‘settlement’ in late October. Mill owners demanded that the government compensate them for the losses suffered during the 2018 flood when water first entered the godowns of Kalady rice mills. 75% of the rice growers are in Palakkad, and the rice mill lobby in Kalady calls the shots. Representatives of the Kerala Rice Mill Owners Association (KRMOA), KK Karnan, Varkey Peter, and Pavizham Antony, participated in the talks.

These mill owners wanted more time to be ready to provide 68% of the paddy procured as rice after processing it to the government. Mill owners say they will return only 64%, but the ratio was enhanced to 68% following a High Court order. It is 68% all over Bharat. Another apparent demand was to reverse the 5% GST on handling charges and they wanted the government to release the amount of ₹15.37 crore due to them as processing charges.

A resolution to the rice crisis is nowhere to be seen. In the meantime, crony capitalists and Marxists in Kerala will bring out the products purchased at Rs.16 per kilo and sell them for Rs.100. They might even throw in a ‘free’ food kit to placate their communist cadre. Bondalu will also arrive soon from Andhra and will be sold as Jaya. Long live democracy, secularism and federalism!

China bans all celebrities from endorsing certain products, and those with ‘lapsed morals’ from endorsing anything

China has banned all celebrities from endorsing a range of products and banned those with “lapsed morals” from endorsing anything, as part of an ongoing drive to align society with “core socialist values”, the media reported.

The regulations, announced by state regulators this week, bar Chinese celebrities from publicly endorsing or advertising health, education and financial commodities, including e-cigarettes and baby formula, The Guardian reported.

Regulators said the push was to ensure China’s society was “guided by Xi Jinping thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era”, referring to the sweeping ideology underpinning the rule of the Xi-led Communist party, The Guardian reported.

“Celebrities should consciously practise socialist core values in their advertising endorsement activities, and endorsement activities should conform to social morals and traditional virtues,” the new regulations said.

It is the latest regulatory move in a crackdown on the entertainment industry, in which celebrities have effectively been blacklisted over scandals and interventions into online fandom.

The rules also banned companies from hiring celebrities found to have “lapsed morals” or engaged in illegal behaviour including tax evasion, drunkenness, drug addiction and fraud, and from using images of Communist party leaders, revolutionary leaders and heroes in their advertising, The Guardian reported.

The authorities said the regulations had been introduced in response to celebrities illegally or falsely endorsing “bad ideas”.

“The media is lax, allowing illegal and immoral stars to participate in advertising endorsements. The chaos in the field of advertising endorsements has seriously infringed upon the rights and interests of consumers, disrupted the market order and polluted the social atmosphere, and the people have expressed strong reactions,” it said, according to state media.

Under Xi’s increasingly authoritarian rule, China’s government has tightened control over the country’s entertainment industry and celebrity fandom in an attempt to reshape China’s pop culture landscape, The Guardian reported.

Teacher recruitment scam: TMC MLA Manik Bhattacharya used to get cut in admission fees of private training colleges

0

Tapas Mondal, a prime witness in the multi-crore teacher recruitment scam in West Bengal, on Wednesday accused Trinamool Congress MLA and former president of West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE), Manik Bhattacharya, of being a recipient of share in the admission fees received by different private diploma in elementary education (D.El. Ed) colleges in the state.

Mondal, the president of All Bengal Teachers’ Training Achievers’ Association (ABTTAA), an umbrella organisation of such private D.El.Ed colleges, was a close associate of Bhattacharya.

He himself used to run a number of such private colleges. On Wednesday, he appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) sleuths to face questioning relating to the scam.

Speaking briefly to waiting mediapersons, Mondal levelled some serious allegations against Bhattacharyya, which virtually corroborated ED’s findings that the candidates going for offline registration in some private training colleges had to pay Rs 5,000 each, a portion of which went to Bhattacharya, who is currently under judicial custody for his alleged involvement in the primary teacher’s recruitment scam.

“Candidates had to pay Rs 5,000 each for offline registration. ‘He’ used to send people to my office to collect the files and cash, which has been confirmed by the staff of my office,” Mondal said.

When asked who was the person who sent people to his office, Mondal said, “Manik Babu.”

Meanwhile, ED sources said that as per the rules, the admission process in such private training colleges is online. However, after the completion of online admission, some seats often remained vacant. For these vacant seats, offline registrations were done for which each candidate had to pay a sum of Rs 5,000, a portion of which reportedly went to Bhattacharya.

ED sources said that it is a matter of investigation whether these candidates going for offline registration got appointed as primary teachers at a later stage.

“For that purpose, the interrogation of Tapas Mondal is important since he is privy to important information on this count,” they said.

To recall, on October 24, ED’s counsel Phiroze Edulji had informed a lower court that following preliminary investigation, the central agency has traced properties worth Rs 10 crore owned by Bhattacharya and his family members.

Edulji had informed that ED sleuths have traced Rs 3 crore from a bank account held jointly by Bhattacharya’s wife, Satarupa Bhattacharya, and a deceased person named Mrityunjoy Chakraborty.

The ED’s counsel also informed the court that a compact disc was recovered from the residence of Bhattacharya which contained the names of 4,000 individuals.

On cross-checking with WBBPE authorities, the central agency officials confirmed that 2,500 out of that 4,000 have secured jobs as primary teachers.

Hindu girl (13) groomed & abducted by Muslim pedophile (23), locals protest police apathy: Kolhapur, Maharashtra

0
girl love jihad islamist grooming gang

Another case of alleged Grooming Jihad (aka Love Jihad) has come to the fore, this time from Maharashtra’s Kolhapur. A 13-year-old Hindu girl went missing since her last exam conducted on October 17 just before the Diwali festival and has not been found as yet.

Her family lodged a complaint under the POCSO Act and have apparently named one Altaf Kazi (23) as the accused who groomed and abducted their daughter. Angry locals have accused the police of inaction saying they have done nothing to trace the girl. It is believed that the girl has been taken to the neighboring state of Karnataka by the pedophile. They alleged that such cases of grooming/love jihad are always treated with apathy by police.

Various Hindu groups, including BJP MLA Nitesh Rane, on Wednesday staged a ‘Thiyya Andolan’ (squatting in protest) in front of Juna Rajwada police station in Kolhapur in protest against the police’s failure to rescue the minor girl.

Rane alleged that the police officers were being evasive when asked about action taken in the matter. The BJP leader said this was possible as there was no anti-conversion law in the state and alleged that the police department totally neglects Love Jihad incident in the city. He issued an ultimatum to the police department to find the girl within the next two days else he will increase agitation.

It has been in several cases that police is initially loathe to act or even register parents’ complaints, and only stirs into action when Hindus stage such protests and put pressure on higher-ups. This is the sad state of law enforcement in our secular Republic, especially when it comes to security of the law-abiding and peaceful majority community.

Bharat should hedge its bets in US v. China race

0

The world is at an inflection point and the world order is about to change. There are only two possibilities: Either a multipolar world arises after China surpasses the US as the world’s largest economy, or the US defeats both Russia and China to establish absolute supremacy over the world. Nobody can predict for sure where the chips will fall. However, if you were to quantify, the probability is high for the emergence of a multipolar world. This is why Bharat shouldn’t blindly follow the USA or antagonize China permanently.

China’s inexorable rise

China’s growth over the last two decades has been incredible and unprecedented. Look at the chart below that compares the GDP of Bharat, China and the US from 2001 to 2021:

The US economy is now only 20% larger than China’s. While China faces a lot of uphill battles — slowing economy, high debt, real estate crisis, shrinking workforce, and unscrupulous US sanctions (which most US “allies” are forced to follow) — the Chinese society can bite the bullet and push hard for a few more years to surpass the US.

Look at the IMF estimate for 2022 and 2023. Combined, China will grow 3x faster than the US — 7.6% versus 2.6%. A few more years like that, China will surely overtake the US.

US economists and pundits are furiously talking down China. However, here’s a shocker for them: China’s GDP went up whopping 23% in one year (2020-2021)!!!

From $14.4 trillion to $17.7 trillion!

One more such jump in the next few years… and China will easily leave the US behind in dust.

By the way, how did this happen? It was mostly because Chinese Yuan appreciated about 10% against the US dollar in 2021.

Yuan/RMB will strengthen

Forget 2022 when the US dollar is appreciating against pretty much all currencies (except against Russian Ruble!). This is not all good for the US, by the way. The rising interest rates will wreck the US housing market and the bond market. The US stock market is also deep in the bear zone.

Eventually, China’s Yuan will strengthen — perhaps by 20-25% over the next few years. Why? Two main reasons:

  1. Internationalization of Yuan. This is already happening but in a gradual way, like the Chinese always do — remember how they embraced capitalism step-by-step. Already, Yuan is a part of the IMF basket; last year, cross-border transactions worth trillions of Yuan happened without fanfare; dozens of countries now have Yuan in their portfolios for foreign exchange reserves; BRI countries and America’s geopolitical rivals like Russia and Iran are wholeheartedly embracing Yuan for trade. Finally, Digital Yuan and CIPS — China’s answer for SWIFT — will accelerate internationalization of RMB.
  2. A strong Yuan to become a wealthy nation. China will officially become a developed nation next year — crossing the threshold of $13,000 of GDP-per-capita. China’s goal is to double that number by 2035. That cannot be achieved by GDP growth alone; it will be accomplished by strengthening of Yuan. Yes, as an exporter, China will be concerned about too strong a Yuan, but it can easily go from ¥6.40 to ¥5.40 per $1. This will also be a good test for Chinese manufacturers — they need to get better in quality and marketing in order to sell more expensive products.

America’s problems

While the US is still the world’s hegemon, its power doesn’t come from fair play anymore.

The only reason the US economy is growing a little bit at all is because of its ability to print and borrow trillions of dollars. The illusion of wealth for some Americans comes from massive bubbles in the stock market and real estate, both of which are crashing this year. Majority of Americans live from paycheck to paycheck. The US model of financial capitalism is predatory and unsustainable.

The US is also lagging behind in technology. China is publishing more scientific papers and applying for far more patents than the US does. The only option for the US to maintain its tech supremacy is by imposing sanctions on 500+ Chinese companies. This is such a pathetic way to win.

In geopolitics, the US is the Empire of Chaos. Again, rather than focusing on its own success, the US tries to stay #1 by bringing down Europe and Russia in one swoop. The traditional divide-and-rule playbook.

Conclusion

This is the most dangerous decade since WW2. Bharat must avoid getting caught up in geopolitical power games. There is a good chance that Russia will win the Ukraine war and Europe will be forced to negotiate peace. (Four months of winter without adequate electricity and heating will change a lot of European minds).

China has the potential to become the largest economy. And the moment it happens, a lot of countries will openly ditch the US and embrace China. Imagine OPEC countries selling oil for Yuan — that will be the end of Petrodollar and the American Century.

Bharat should be smart and hedge its bets to thrive in the coming tumultuous years.

16-year-old porn addict rapes and murders minor girl: Kalaburagi, K’taka

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a minor girl in Kalaburagi district, police said on Thursday.

The investigations have revealed that the accused boy was addicted to watching porn. He was on the mobile constantly and watched porn videos most of the time, said the police.

On Tuesday evening the 15-year-old girl, who had gone out to attend nature’s call, was found dead. The preliminary investigations suggested that the girl was gang-raped and murdered.

Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai was arrested for protesting against sexist remarks of a DMK orator. Saidai Sadiq, the DMK orator, had called BJP women from cinema background as “items”. 370 BJP Mahila Morcha members who took part in the protest have also been booked.

Saidai Sadiq had made very crass remarks against Khushbu Sundar, Gayathri Raghuram, Gowthami and Nameetha, actress-turned-politicians of BJP. He called them items and made sexual innuendos about Khushbu while talking about when she was in DMK. In colloquial language he said that DMK leader Elaya Aruna had sex with Actress Khushbhu several times. This section of his speech went viral in social media and attracted criticism.

TN BJP condemned this sexist attitude and demanded strict action from the DMK government. Even though the speech gained attention on October 27 itself, police were dragging their feet in booking Sadiq. Only after BJP announced a protest cyber crime police booked him under sections 153 (provocation with the intention to cause riot), 294(b) (obscene words in a public place), 505(1)(b) and 509 (insulting modesty of women) of the Indian Penal Code and section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women Harassment Act.

BJP had planned for a demonstration at Valluvar Kottam in Chennai on November 2 but police refused to grant permission. The party went ahead with the protest and the participants including Annamalai were detained and booked under 6 sections for protesting without permission. Annamalai had criticised TN police force saying that it serves as Arivalayam, the headquarters of DMK. He alleged that higher positions in the force have been politicised.

In regard to the Coimbatore cylinder attack case, he attributed the intelligence failure to the department head’s bias. He accused ADGP Davidson Devasirvatham, the head of the state’s intelligence department, of having close ties with missionary organisations and hand picking officials to fill posts in the department.
