Tensions escalated in Durgapur Union of Ulipur Upazila on Monday as a violent confrontation occurred during the transportation of Durga Puja Murtis to the local temple. The clash reportedly arose over the alleged extortion of tolls from the carriers of the Murtis.
Local sources said that as the Murti bearers moved through Durgapur Bazaar, a group demanded payment, which led to a heated argument. The dispute quickly escalated, resulting in the vandalization of the Murtis and attacks on those carrying them.
In response, members of the local Hindu minority community staged a road blockade in Durgapur Bazaar, protesting the incident and demanding accountability. “Why should there be tolls for bringing Murtis?” questioned one participant, reflecting broader concerns about the safety and religious freedom of minority communities in the area.
The timing of the incident, just days before Durga Puja, has heightened anxiety among residents, who fear that such acts could disrupt communal harmony and the peaceful celebration of religious festivals.
Law enforcement authorities have deployed personnel to the area to restore order and ensure security, while officials are reportedly investigating the incident.
This event underscores ongoing challenges faced by minority communities in Bangladesh, particularly during religious festivals, where tensions over local disputes can quickly escalate into violence.
