A Hindu and mother and her pregnant daughter were brutally stabbed to death on Tuesday, March 1, by a man named Al Jobayer in the Nitaiganj area of Narayangunj. The following morning, Ramprasad Chakraborty lodged a case about the murder of his wife Ruma Chakraborty and their pregnant daughter Ritu, at Sadar Police Station against the 26-year-old murderer who is a resident of Paikpara.
The accused was produced at the Narayangunj court on Wednesday, and though the police had pleaded for a 10-day remand, court granted just a 3-day remand over the triple murders. Asaduzzaman, a police inspector at the Narayanganj Police station, informed the media that Jobayer had confessed to having killed both the women as he wanted to rob money and jewelery from their residence at Dalpatti in Nitaiganj on Tuesday afternoon.
“We have interrogated Jobayer extensively. He said that he needed money to run his own business and that’s why he targeted the biggest house in Nitaiganj,” informed Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Amir Khasru.
However, the brutal manner in which the murders were carried out, even before the victims offered any resistance, hints that robbery might not be the only motivation.
As per reports, Jobayer reached the victims’ house, a flat on the sixth floor of Matri Bhaban at around 3:30 PM on the day of the incident. He pressed the door bell of the flat and Ruma Chakraborty opened the door. As soon as she opened the door, Jobayer strangled her neck with one hand and attacked her with a knife he was holding in the other. She was stabbed to death.
When Mrs. Chakraborty’s pregnant daughter rushed out of her room towards her mother, Jobayer landed multiple fatal blows on her with the knife, killing her as well.
By this time, Sheela the daughter-in-law of the Chakraborty household, who was in an inside room, rushed out to check on the clamor. Seeing her, Jobayer tried to attack her with a boti from the kitchen (long curved blade with a wooden platform held down by foot; used to chop vegetables, meat and fish in Bengali houses) but she somehow pushed the attacker aside. Jobayer dropped the boti and Sheela grabbed it and fled via the staircase. When Jobayer chased her, Sheela showed him the boti and threatened to kill him. Jobayer ran back to the flat and shut the door from inside.
Downstairs, Sheela informed the neighbours about the mayhem. Police were called and Jobayer was detained.
A couple of gold necklaces and earrings have also been found in Jobayer’s possession which he had taken away from the house. The 26-year-old murder accused tried to defend himself by narrating that he had passed HSC in 2013 and had gotten admission at a private university in Dhaka to study Computer Science and Engineering. However, due to financial challenges he failed to complete his studies.
Further, Jobayer’s family has claimed that he is “mentally challenged” and has been showing signs of instability for the past few months. However, Narayangunj police maintains that both the murders were done by the accused in cold blood and without mercy. There were multiple fatal injuries in the bodies of both his victims.
Ritu, who was a resident of Chattogram, had come to stay at her paternal home during her pregnancy. Jobayer has not only killed Ruma Chakraborty and Ritu but also the unborn child the latter was expecting.
Trying to play down three brutal murders by claiming ‘mental instability’ exposes the utter lack of morality in the Miyan family. This is the same card played in defence of Iqbal Hossain, the Islamist who had placed a copy of the Quran at the feet of a Sri Hanuman murti inside a Durga Puja Mandap leading to a massive anti-Hindu pogrom in October last year. Killing Hindus and them claiming mental retardation seems to be a new tactic of Islamists in Muslim-majority Bangladesh.
Don’t put Islam into this, what he did was not Islamic at all then why address it as such? He himself hasn’t stated if it was islamically motivated. The person who wrote the story and the other person who commented, know what you’re talking about and think before trying to be provocative.
1.) What does Islam say about how non-Muslims should be treated? 2.) Do Bangladesh and other Islamic nations have a proven history of persecuting their minorities? 3.) How do you now for sure that this crime is not connected to Islamic preaching that the accused may have been exposed to? 4.) How does the Islamic world react when any incident happens affecting a Muslim in non-Islamic nations, like Hindu villagers beating a cattle thief?
We see many such instances of Muslim men killing 2-3 generations of Hindus. We never see it other way round. Are all these men “unstable” or is it a religious inclination to kill kafirs? I think it is the latter.
