Is the Line Between Reality and Imagination Blurring?

Once, whenever we saw a photograph or a video, we considered it a reflection of reality. That is, behind every image and every video we saw, there used to be a camera, an event, and a concrete truth. But today, with the rapid expansion of generative artificial intelligence (AI), that old belief is being shaken at its very foundations. Now, whether it is a scene that seems impossible to the human eye or an event no camera has ever witnessed, astonishingly realistic images and videos are being created with just a few words in a text prompt. In this context, the central question is no longer, “How beautiful are AI-generated images?” but rather, “Is everything we see really true?” Is the boundary between imagination and reality becoming blurred? Is imagination beginning to overshadow reality? These are the questions now compelling us to think deeply.

AI Is Giving Wings to Human Imagination

The capabilities of today’s visual artificial intelligence have enormously expanded human imagination. “Schools on the moon,” “a city built beneath the ocean,” “a mythical warrior walking in the rain,” “an Indian astronaut walking on the moon at sunset” — such phrases once existed only in imagination. But now, all it takes is typing a few words, and within moments, they appear before our eyes in photorealistic form. Advanced systems such as OpenAI Sora have proven they can create not only still images but also photorealistic videos featuring multiple characters, specific movements, complex emotions, and a consistent visual style.

AI has opened revolutionary possibilities for the creative world. In fields such as cinema, education, advertising, gaming, design, and medicine, AI-generated images are breaking new ground. In filmmaking, a director working on a small-budget film can quickly and affordably create concept visuals on the scale of a major studio using AI applications. In education, teachers can visually present complex scientific concepts and make learning easier and more vivid for students. Historians can reconstruct the past visually, while urban designers can preview cities that have not yet been built through AI-powered imagination. Writers can bring the worlds of their novels to life before the eyes of readers. In this way, AI is transforming human imagination into visuals that appear real and, in doing so, giving wings to human imagination.

AI-Generated Imagery: A Challenge to Human Perception

Artificial intelligence is creating wonders by giving concrete form to human imagination. But the real issue we must think about here is this — AI is not merely drawing imaginary pictures; it is testing the very human faculty that recognizes truth. According to an explanation published by the World Economic Forum, a joint study by Sophie Nightingale of Lancaster University and digital forensics expert Hany Farid revealed something startling. People rated AI-generated synthetic faces as more trustworthy than real faces. On average, those synthetic faces were identified as 7.7% more trustworthy than actual human faces. This is a deeply concerning sign. AI-generated images are deceiving not only our ability to detect fraud, but even our ability to recognize truth with our own eyes.

As AI has reached a level where it can create imaginary images with extreme naturalness, they appear to the human eye just like images of real events. At times, they seem even more attractive and believable than real photographs. This is an extremely dangerous development. Until now, we have largely lived by the belief that “what we see with our own eyes is true.” But today, AI-generated images showing riots that never happened, words that were never spoken, or natural disasters that never occurred are going viral on social media. This means that a lie is now supported not only by false words, but also by false visuals that appear real.

The “Deepfake” Era: A Crisis of Knowing and the Liar’s Dividend

AI is no longer limited to images alone. It can now generate videos, voices, facial expressions, and even speaking styles that appear real. With deepfake technology, it is possible to make it seem as though a person did something they never did, or said something they never said. This creates a new danger. It is not merely about turning truth into falsehood, but also about making falsehood appear to be truth. UNESCO has described this as a “crisis of knowing.” In other words, the very foundation of our knowledge system — by which we judge whether what we see, hear, and share with society is true or false — is under threat.

In this situation, the danger moves in two directions. The first is believing falsehood to be truth: people emotionally reacting to riots that never occurred, natural disasters that never happened, or words never spoken by political leaders, all because deepfake technology makes them look real. The second is dismissing truth itself as falsehood: even a real event can now be easily brushed aside as “just an AI-generated visual.” Experts call this second condition the “liar’s dividend.” For those who trade in lies, AI is becoming a protective shield.

Is the Idea of a Photograph as Proof of Reality Changing?

There was a time when photographs were regarded as powerful evidence in courts, in history, and in news reporting. But now, to trust an image, we must also consider its source, metadata, and verification. From now on, the moment we see a photograph, we may have to ask: “Is this photo real or not?” “Who created it?” “What is its source?”, and “What kinds of alterations has it undergone?” This means that truth today is no longer merely something visible to the eye; it is becoming something that must be verified along with its origins.

Is AI a Boon or a Curse for Artists?

The fact that AI can generate thousands of images within seconds, while an artist may spend hours or days creating a single work, is causing concern in the creative world. This has sparked a broad discussion about whether it diminishes human labor and the value of art itself. However, technology has never become a complete substitute for human intelligence. Today, many artists are using AI as a powerful co-pilot. AI can quickly give form to human ideas. But it can never replace the emotion that arises from lived human experience and from the depths of the human heart. AI may be able to give shape to an artist’s imagination, but it cannot independently create the life, feeling, and emotional world that lie behind that imagination.

Artificial Intelligence Is Like a Sharpened Knife

A sharpened knife can be used to cut fruit. The same knife can also be used to harm others. Artificial intelligence works in much the same way. In itself, AI has neither good nor evil as an inherent nature. It is the mindset of the human being who uses it that determines its impact. If used for education, it spreads knowledge. If used for art, it enhances creativity. If used for history, it can bring historical moments vividly before our eyes. But if used for violence, deception, hate propaganda, or destruction, it harms society, the nation, and the trust that exists among people. In other words, artificial intelligence is only a tool; the real driving force is the human way of thinking behind it.

That is why open standards such as C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity), along with systems such as Content Credentials, are gaining importance worldwide. These preserve provenance information such as where a digital file came from, what changes were made to it, and who created it. In the future, truth may not always be directly visible to the eye. But it may remain embedded in the digital history of that content.

As a Closing Word to This Article…

The days when we could look at a photograph and immediately believe, “This is true,” are gradually coming to an end. We are now entering an age of critical thinking in which, upon seeing an image, we ask: “What is its source?” “Which institution is behind it?” “Does it have metadata?”, and “Has it been verified?”

As UNESCO has stated, the solution to this crisis does not lie only in technological detection tools; it lies in human education, critical thinking, and responsible digital citizenship. Young people, students, media institutions, and society as a whole must act with greater caution, scrutiny, and responsibility before sharing information. Artificial intelligence has not completely erased the boundary between imaginary images and real ones; it has shifted that boundary from the visible surface to a much deeper level. From now on, truth is not merely what is “seen” with the eyes; it is what can be traced to its source, what can be verified, and what can be understood in context.

AI can deceive our eyes. But if society builds new norms based on ethics and wisdom, truth will never disappear; instead, it will be redefined in a more responsible form. No matter how powerful technology becomes, it is human discernment in the search for truth that can protect society. Technology gains value, dignity, meaning, and purpose only when it is used for the development of human society. Therefore, let us all use technology wisely and ensure that the line between reality and imagination does not fade away.
