Distorting Hindu rituals, TMC MLA performed Tarpan for BJP leaders Suvendu Adhikary, Dilip Ghosh

Following the joyful festivities of the Durga Puja, Kolkata prepares to return to routine life. At this point, it is worth highlighting a massive religious sacrilege and social blunder committed by TMC leader Madan Mitra on the first day of the Durga Puja.

On Mahalaya day, the MLA from the Kamarhati Assembly constituency named two of the tallest BJP leaders in Bengal, Suvendu Adhikary and Dilip Ghosh, in the tarpan ritual. He had installed pictures of these two leaders at the ghat of Ganga and put garlands on these pictures. As per Hindu traditions, only the departed ancestors are remembered and offered water on the morning of Mahalaya. That Madan Mitra garlanded the pictures of his political rivals also translates to a death threat to the BJP leaders.

Aggrieved by the outrageous act, on Monday, September 26, BJP Mondal president Indranil Dasgupta registered a complaint against Madan Mitra at Bally Howrah Police Station. The BJP has accused TMC MLA Mitra of deriding Hindu sentiments by naming the two living BJP leaders at the tarpan ritual. The complaint mentions that as per the Hindu tradition, the ceremony is only performed after the death of a person and cannot be dedicated to people alive. Mitra even garlanded the photographs of both the BJP leaders.

While speaking to India Today on the controversial act, the TMC MLA claimed that the BJP in West Bengal would die after the panchayat elections. “Bengal BJP will be departing soon. There will be no one in the BJP to offer Tarpan. I am not categorically saying we are not against those people whose pictures are being shown. But we are against their atrocities. BJP will die totally after the Panchayat election which is scheduled for next year,” said Mitra.

On the other hand, West Bengal Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay also slammed the TMC lawmaker for performing Tarpan with Suvendu Adhikari’s picture.” I don’t support such things, he will still be Madan Mitra if he does not do such stuff,” he said. The Speaker further asserted that Mitra did the act to gain ‘publicity’. “Such things are being done for publicity, and the media is also covering such events,” he added.

This is not the first time Mitra has distorted Hindu religious rituals. During Saraswati Puja this year, he was seen crushing a couple of lotuses and declaring that the Maa Saraswati should no longer be offered lotus in West Bengal. It is common knowledge that the lotus is significant in Hindu pujas. The flower had become the target of Mitra’s bigotry and political rivalry.

Justifying his insanity, he stated that the BJP had insulted the Bengalis by offering only Padma awards to former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, singer Sandhya Mukhopadhyay, and Tabla player Anindya Chatterjee and declared that he was boycotting the national flower for good.

The “colourful” senior TMC leader has often been in the news for his intimate pictures with young women going viral on social media. The women whom he is clicked with are also accused of being escorts.

Back in 2014, the TMC stalwart was arrested by central agencies for his alleged link in the Saradha chit fund scam. He was charged with cheating, criminal conspiracy, and fund misappropriation.

Again, back in January 2022, Madan Mitra’s daughter-in-law Swati Roy conducted a Facebook live session and made explosive allegations against her in-laws. Though Roy refrained from taking names, she shared that her husband was a psychopath.

“He takes a handful of sleeping pills and drinks alcohol. He used to abuse me and assault me,” she said. She also added that in 2019, after she left her matrimonial house and went to his parental home, she was given death threats from her in-laws’ family. Social media users were quick to identify her as Madan Mitra’s daughter-in-law.
