XIV. Pūrvapakṣa as Strategic Counter-Measure
In the intellectual history of Indian dialectics, no serious thinker ever attempted to refute a rival philosophical school without first executing a rigorous Pūrvapakṣa.
In classical traditions of debate (Vāda), Pūrvapakṣa required a scholar to thoroughly master an opponent’s premises, axioms, and arguments to such an exacting degree that the opponent would agree the exposition was completely fair and accurate. Only after establishing this deep structural comprehension could the scholar advance to Khaṇḍana (refutation) and Siddhānta (the establishment of one’s own substantiated thesis)…………..”
