TN police arrest Hindu activist on DMK man’s complaint for sharing pastor video

Tamil Nadu police arrested a Hindu activist for sharing a video of a pastor dancing with a girl asking Hindus to boycott such Western culture. He was earlier arrested for saying that statues of Hindu-hater Periyar EV Ramasamy kept in front of temples should be removed.

Kanal Kannan, a stunt choreographer in the Tamil cinema industry, and an office-bearer of Hindu Munnani, was arrested by the cyber crime police based on a complaint from a DMK functionary Austin Bennett. The latter filed a complaint against him alleging that one of his tweets was demeaning Christianity. Following this Kannan was arrested on July 1.

He had shared a video on Twitter in which a pastor could be seen gyrating with a woman. His tweet said, “This is the state of Western culture. Oh Hindus who converted,  think and return”. As per an India Today report DMK functionary Bennet “accused Kanal Kannan of posting a manipulated video of a priest dancing with a girl”. His complaint said that the tweet was derogatory towards Christianity and converted Hindus and that it was an attempt to malign the Christian preachers.

Initially, Kannan was called for an inquiry at 10 am but was arrested at 7 pm after being ‘investigated’ for several hours. Reportedly, he was not even allowed to have lunch on time despite his lawyer telling police that he should partake in food on time as he is a diabetic. Hindu Munnani leaders allege that even though the Investigating Officer(IO) didn’t come till 2 pm Kannan was intentionally forced to remain at the police station. He has been booked under sections 295 A(insulting religious beliefs) and 506(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

Kanal Kannan was earlier arrested for saying that only the day when the Periyar statue in front of Srirangam temple is broken, will truly be the day of the Hindu uprising. While speaking at a public meeting he said, “Nearly one lakh devotees come to worship Sri Ranganatha Swamy every day. But when they come out there is a statue of one who said there is no god welcoming them. Only the day on which it is broken will be the day on which the real Hindu uprising would have taken place”.

The DMK government has been using police force to suppress the critical voices, especially pro-Hindu ones, by incarcerating them for frivolous charges. People were arrested on flimsy grounds for sharing memes, collecting funds for temple renovation and other such inconsequential things.

Recently, Uma Gargi, a vocal supporter of BJP and a social media influencer, was arrested for sharing allegedly defamatory posts against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, former CM M Karunanidhi, and Periyar aka EV Ramasamy. She was arrested on another complaint the moment she got bail initially. Later she secured bail only after 20 days.

BJP State Secretary SG Suryah was arrested for his letter criticising Communist MP Su Venkatesan on an incident in which a hygiene worker died due to allergies in the body after a Communist party ward member forced him to clean a manhole. At that time CM Stalin had released a video warning BJP against provoking DMK.

Around the same time, AIADMK IT wing functionary Gowtham was arrested for sharing a video meme mocking CM’s statement. DMK cadre claimed that the tweet was demeaning the CM even though it was only made with a humorous tone.

Krishna Kumar Murugan, another BJP supporter and social media influencer was arrested for a poster which caricatured MK Stalin in an attempt to counter a similar poster mocking BJP state President K Annamalai.

Subash Suyambu, a BJP corporator, was arrested for sharing a video allegedly slandering CM MK Stalin. He had reportedly shared a video of the CM speaking, followed by the DMK government’s temple demolitions.

YouTuber Maridhas, a nationalist, was incarcerated by the DMK government for exposing “Dravidian Stock ” handles mocking late CDS Bipin Rawat’s death in one of his videos.

A Tamil nationalist YouTuber, Dkashinamurthi aka Seethaiyin Maindhan, was arrested for exposing Periyar EV Ramasamy’s real face by quoting incidents from books published by Periyarist organisations.

Karthik Gopinath, another nationalist Youtuber, was arrested for collecting funds for renovating a temple vandalised allegedly by a Christian convert. HRCE had filed a complaint against him for collecting funds without its permission.

BJP executive committee member Sowdha Mani was arrested for merely sharing a video that criticised the DMK government’s double standards in demolishing temples in the name of removing encroachments but leaving illegally built churches.
