Temple desecration in Haveri: Mohammed Jaffer arrested after urinating at Anjaneya Swamy Temple

Tensions surfaced in Shiggaon town of Karnataka’s Haveri district after a 31-year-old Islamist man, identified by police as Mohammed Jaffer, was caught urinating inside the premises of an Anjaneya temple on Thursday night. According to police, the incident occurred at around 9:30 pm. Local Hindu residents reportedly caught Jaffer at the spot and questioned him before handing him over to the police. He was subsequently arrested, and a case was registered under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

As per Prabha Sakshi reports, the incident triggered anger among local residents and Hindu organizations, who staged protests demanding strict action against the Islamist Jaffer. Police teams were deployed in the area to prevent the situation from escalating and to maintain law and order. Authorities increased security around the temple and surrounding areas following the protests while urging people to remain calm and avoid any actions.

Police said their preliminary investigation found that Jaffer had been sleeping on the temple premises. Officials are examining why he entered the temple premises and what led to the act.

The police have not yet publicly established any specific motive behind the incident. Investigators are therefore continuing to question the Islamist Jaffer and examine the available evidence before drawing conclusions about his intentions. The case has been registered, and further legal action will depend on the findings of the investigation.

Following the incident and subsequent protests, additional security measures were implemented in Shiggaon to prevent further disturbances. Police officials said the situation is currently under control and that necessary action will be taken in accordance with the law.

The arrest of Mohammed Jaffer following the desecration of the historic Anjaneya Swamy Temple in Shiggaon, at a time when Shravan rituals were underway, has once again raised serious questions about respect for places of Hindu worship. The principle of Sarva Dharma Samabhava demands mutual respect and restraint from all; that principle must be applied equally and without selective moral standards. Any deliberate attack on Hindu religious sentiments should invite swift and stringent legal action, with the law providing strong deterrence against those who intentionally desecrate or insult places of worship.

This is not the first time that Hindu places of worship have faced such insults by the radicalists. Hindus never engage in such acts, while Islamists are often the ones who deliberately insult, provoke, and hurt Hindu sentiments, never missing an opportunity to target Hindu religious beliefs. This is one such incident where Hindus were deliberately provoked, and Anjaneya Bhagwan was insulted. This is a serious offense. How can a random Islamist radical come and desecrate a Hindu temple? The government should take such incidents seriously and bring strict laws against people who desecrate temples and religious structures.
