Janeu row: Hindu religious symbols being targeted in Karnataka; three arrested as forced removal of Janeu during KCET examination sparked outrage

A major controversy has erupted in Karnataka after three staff members of a private college in Bengaluru were arrested for forcing Brahmin students to remove their sacred Janeu during the Common Entrance Test (CET). The incident has triggered widespread anger among Brahmin organizations, parents, and members of the public, who have condemned the act as an insult to Hindu religious identity and a violation of basic constitutional freedoms.

Students allegedly forced to remove sacred Janeu

As per the Organiser reports, the incident reportedly occurred during security checks at a CET examination centre under the Karnataka Examinations Authority. According to a complaint filed at the Madiwala Police Station by a parent, his son was stopped before entering the examination hall and instructed to remove his Janeu despite explaining that it was a sacred religious symbol worn as part of Hindu tradition. The student was allegedly compelled to comply in order to appear for the examination.

Following the complaint, police initiated an investigation and arrested three individuals involved in the examination process: the college vice-principal and exam in charge, Sudhakar; the first division assistant, Saritha; and the room invigilator, Girija. Preliminary findings reportedly suggest that multiple students wearing the sacred thread were subjected to similar treatment.

Hindu religious sentiments hurt; if a hijab is ok, then why not the Janeu?

The controversy has rapidly escalated into a statewide issue, with many questioning how a sacred Hindu symbol could be treated in such a humiliating manner inside an educational institution. The Janeu holds deep spiritual significance in Brahmin tradition and symbolizes discipline, responsibility, and adherence to dharmic values. Community leaders and activists have argued that treating it as a prohibited object reflects serious religious insensitivity and ignorance of Hindu customs.

Several organisations, including the Akhila Karnataka Brahmana Mahasabha, have strongly condemned the incident and demanded strict legal action against those responsible. The organisation reportedly called for cancellation of the institution’s license and heavy penalties, stating that no student should be forced to choose between faith and education.

Political reactions intensify the row

Senior BJP leader R. Ashok strongly criticised the incident and accused the Karnataka government of repeatedly hurting Hindu religious sentiments. Speaking to the media, he stated that the affected student’s family belongs to his constituency and alleged that the sacred thread was removed despite clear objections from the student.

Today it is the Janivara; tomorrow it could be the Lingayat Ishtalinga thread or the Vokkaliga Ududaara. Will this stop here?” he asked, warning that targeting visible Hindu religious symbols under the guise of security checks was unacceptable. He also demanded a thorough investigation and suspension of officials responsible for negligence.

Questions raised over selective sensitivity

The incident has reignited debate over the lack of cultural and religious sensitivity in institutional procedures. Hindus argue that while examination security is important, authorities must ensure that protocols do not infringe on the religious freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution. Many questioned why sacred Hindu symbols are repeatedly subjected to scrutiny and humiliation, while institutions often hesitate to show similar rigidity toward other religious practices.

Social media platforms witnessed massive outrage, with users calling the act discriminatory and deeply disrespectful toward Brahmin students. Several parents expressed concern that students were mentally distressed during one of the most important examinations of their academic lives.

Beyond the political controversy, the emotional impact on students has become a major concern. CET examinations play a decisive role in determining admissions to professional courses in Karnataka, and students enter exam halls under immense pressure. Parents stated that forcing students to remove sacred religious symbols moments before the examination created anxiety, humiliation, and emotional disturbance that could directly affect performance.

For many in Karnataka, the incident has become larger than a procedural lapse. It is now being viewed as a question of whether Hindu students can openly practice and preserve their traditions without fear of embarrassment or institutional interference in their own homeland. Are Hindus safe in Karnataka, where Hindus need permission to practice their faith? Should a Hindu be forced to run away from their traditions because of conversion pressure or social intimidation by the anti-Hindu government?
