Stones pelted on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Jayanti procession in Shegaon, 4 injured: Maharashtra

Four persons were injured after stones were pelted on a procession celebrating Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s Jayanti (birth anniversary) in Ahmednagar District’s Shegaon. Ahmednagar SP Rakesh Ola informed the media that 32 persons have been detained in connection with the violence thus far. Internet services were suspended in Shegaon following the clashes.

Stone pelting in Shegaon & Akola

As per reports, a procession celebrating the birth anniversary of Sambhaji Maharaj was underway in Shegaon on Sunday night when unidentified ‘miscreants’ resorted to stone pelting. The police also recovered sharp weapons from the ‘miscreants’. As is their wont, the media referred to Islamists as miscreants.

Participants of the procession were angered by this and retaliated leading to violent clashes between both groups. Vehicles and shops also came under attack forcing shop owners to down the shutters.

After police learnt of the violence, they rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the Hindus participating in the procession. However, the Hindus were extremely enraged by the unprovoked pelting of stones.

The police finally managed to pacify them and also, stationed police troops in every chowk to prevent any untoward incident. One SRPF squad, a unit of the riot control squad, and 250 policemen were deployed to maintain law and order in Shegaon.

Similar violence was reported from Akola on the eve of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Jayanti. On Saturday evening violent clashes occurred between two groups leaving one person dead and eight others injured. Subsequently, internet services were suspended in Akola and the suspension will remain in force till midnight today (15 May). Markets remained shut today (Monday) and Amravati University postponed its exams in view of the violence.

Akola police have arrested 45 persons so far and FIR has been registered against 300 persons. Police are in the process of identifying and arresting those responsible for the violence. The Maharashtra state government has announced compensation for the family of the deceased. Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said that peace has been restored in both places and emphasized that those attempting to create unrest will be dealt with strictly.

The police initiated an inquiry into the incident and further investigation is underway. The police are working to identify those responsible for the violence. They have also urged the public to refrain from engaging in violent or destructive behaviour and have appealed for peace.

Islamist violence during Hindu festivals

Stone pelting on Hindu festive processions has become a standard Islamic practice across Bharat. Several places across Maharashtra reported instances of stone pelting and violence during Shri Ram Navami celebrations.

The violence that began as Hindus were preparing to celebrate the birth of Prabhu Sri Ram on March 30 has continued well into the weekend. A Dindi Yatra was on its way to Saptashringi Garh when unidentified miscreants pelted stones at the yatra participants as it passed in Jalgaon District’s Paldhi village.

As Ram Navami preparations were underway across the country, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar witnessed violence on the eve of the festival. According to reports, the incident occurred between 1 and 1.30 at night on March 29 in the Kiradpura area. It came to light that stones were pelted at youths who had assembled outside the Ram Mandir for the Ram Navami festivities.
