Nidhi Gupta (17) was pushed to death from the fourth floor of a building in Lucknow by Mohammed Sufiyan for refusing to convert to Islam and marry him. The incident took place in Sector H, Basant Kunj under Dubagga police station limits of UP’s capital on Tuesday night.
Nidhi was rushed to the trauma centre of King George’s Medical University but succumbed to her injuries.
Additional DCP (west) CN Sinha told Hindustan Times (HT) that an FIR has been lodged against the accused, Mohd. Sufiyan, under appropriate sections of murder and forced religious conversion, based on the complaint made by the girl’s mother at Dubagga police station. Sufiyan is currently absconding.
In a now-familiar template, English-language mainstream media outlets like HT try their best to downplay and trivialize such crimes which the entire nation recognizes as love jihad/grooming jihad, but the same media goes out of its way to manufacture a communal/Hindutva angle when a Muslim thief or cattle smuggler dies.
This is how HT chose to start its terse 145-word report on this ghastly incident, “In a crime straight out of a Bollywood potboiler…”. An innocent girl was murdered by a religiously indoctrinated man, and this is the first thing that comes to the HT journalist’s mind?
Also, it is completely misleading to pretend as if such crimes are rare and only seen in films (for the record, Bollywood has entirely evaded the grooming jihad/love jihad topic) – they occur with sickening frequency: Ankita Singh, Nikita Tomar, Riya Gautam are a few names whose cases at least got discussed, but thousands of girls and families suffer in anonymity because of our systemic apathy to these crimes and rampant Hinduphobia and political correctness of our elite ruling class. Grooming jihad doesn’t happen only in Bharat, but is a world-wide pattern.
The HT report further added the label ‘jilted lover’ for the accused, a term designed to evoke some measure of sympathy. Here is the dictionary meaning of ‘jilted’: “cast off or reject (someone, such as a lover) capriciously or unfeelingly“.
On what grounds is HT calling the accused a ‘jilted lover’ of the minor girl? Isn’t this character assassination of a dead girl; did they talk to the girl’s family before choosing to frame her murder in such terms? The FIR includes a charge of attempted forced conversion, so how does that tally with being ‘jilted’?
Nidhi had studied only till high school and was learning to be a beautician at a nearby beauty parlor. Sufiyan stayed in the same neighborhood and had been stalking & harassing her for a while. A few days back, he had ‘gifted’ a mobile to Nidhi and had started calling her, forcing her to convert and marry him. When her family found out and questioned her, she told them about his harassment.
Her mother and other relatives decided to go to Sufiyan’s house and complain about his behavior to his parents. But that didn’t help and matters got more heated. This wouldn’t be the first time that a Muslim family has refused to engage peacefully with a girl’s family and rein their son in. In 2019, Dhruv Tyagi was abused by a Muslim youth’s father and brutally murdered when he went to complain about misbehavior with his daughter.
During the argument at his house, Sufiyan suddenly caught hold of Nidhi and took her to the 4th floor and pushed her down to her death. He has been absconding ever since.
