Hindu man thrashed by Islamist mob after stepping in to help friend Azir’s family dispute: Koppal, KA

A shocking incident has emerged from Koppal district in Karnataka, where a Hindu man was allegedly assaulted by a group of Islamist youths after he attempted to help resolve a domestic dispute involving his Muslim friend and the friend’s wife. The Hindu victim, identified as Venkatesh, reportedly faced violence and humiliation despite stepping in only to mediate and bring peace between the couple.

According to Navbharat Times reports, the dispute began when Azir, a resident of Koppal, had an argument with his wife, Afiya. Following the quarrel, Afiya left their house along with her children and went to a nearby bus station. Concerned about the situation, Azir requested his friend Venkatesh to go to the bus stand and convince his wife to return home so the matter could be resolved.

Acting on his friend’s request, Venkatesh went to the bus station and began speaking with Afiya and her children, trying to persuade them to return home. However, while he was trying to mediate the situation, a group of Islamist youths reportedly confronted him, accusing him of having an inappropriate relationship with the woman simply because he was seen speaking with her.

The situation soon escalated, and the Islamist group allegedly assaulted Venkatesh in public, accusing him of wrongdoing. Despite his attempts to explain that he was only helping his friend, the extremist Islamist mob reportedly continued the attack. According to police sources, the attackers also allegedly snatched his mobile phone and money during the assault.

Police later confirmed that four accused Islamist individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident following Venkatesh’s complaint. Reports further indicate that the accused are allegedly linked to the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), an organization previously associated with the banned Popular Front of India (PFI), which has also given the case a political dimension.

Videos circulating online reportedly show a man believed to be associated with SDPI questioning Venkatesh about his relationship with the woman and her children, further escalating tensions. The incident also triggered unrest outside the police station, where SDPI members staged a protest and demanded that a counter-complaint be filed against Venkatesh.

The accused have reportedly claimed that they were only questioning Venkatesh because the girl present was allegedly 17 years old and argued that a case should instead be filed against him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. However, police officials have stated that the matter remains under investigation, and all aspects of the incident are being examined.

It is important to note that the PFI was banned during the tenure of the BJP government due to its alleged involvement in extremist activities. However, incidents involving individuals associated with the SDPI continue to raise serious concerns. In several cases reported across Karnataka in recent years, individuals linked to these groups have been accused of violent acts, including assaults, intimidation, and attacks during protests, as well as instances of vandalism and looting of shops.

Such incidents demonstrate a pattern of extremism and lawlessness. Under the Congress government, there appears to be little point in expecting decisive action, as governance itself seems to have failed, with such incidents reportedly occurring frequently since the Congress came to power in Karnataka.
