A Pentecostal pastor has been arrested for sexually abusing a pregnant woman. She was raped by the pastor when she was a minor and underwent sexual harassment in many instances from the age of 14. The pastor was booked under the POCSO Act and was arrested while trying to escape.

Vinod Joshua (40), a native of Vellore served as a pastor at the Blessings of Brotherhood church in Keezhakottai, Thoothukudi. He sexually abused a girl from Keezhakottai village in 2018. The girl regularly attended the church for choir practice. She was raped when she was 14 and the abuse continued into her adulthood for 5 years. Pastor Joshua threatened her with murder to warn her against telling anyone. Last year he was transferred to Vellore and now serves at a church there.

The victim got married last year and is 8 months pregnant now. Pastor Joshua reportedly sexually harassed her through WhatsApp video calls. She filed a complaint with women police following which cops launched a search to apprehend him. He was allegedly arrested from the MGR Integrated Bus Stand in Madurai while trying to flee.

As the victim was sexually abused since she was 14, he has been booked under the POCSO Act. During the investigation, he is said to have confessed his crimes.

“Godhra Riots: Court acquits all 35; exposes how ‘pseudo-secular media & politicians’ forced police to implicate Hindus”, Organiser, June 19, 2023:

“On June 12, the Sessions Court in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district acquitted all 35 surviving accused in four cases concerning the 2002 Godhra Riots. Notably, 52 persons were charge-sheeted in the case;however, 17 died during the pendency of the case as the trial went on for 20 years.

Red flags parents must not miss when students chase foreign dreams

“My only request is to please let our children stay in Canada. They are not at fault,” said Sarabjit Kaur, a helpless mother on the verge of tears, as she got the news of her son and hundreds of others facing deportation.

It was not just the 700 students in Canada who went through the mental agony of being caught in a fake admission letter racket but also their parents who spent their life savings and many a sleepless night worrying, praying for their children’s bright future.

Unfortunately, parents and students from India, with most choosing the UK, US and Canada as preferred educational destinations, often fall prey to fraudulent visa agents or recruiters whose sole purpose is to extract money.

While Sarabjit and fellow parents blamed the education consultants for duping them with fake admission letters, there are a number of red flags that each parent with dreams of foreign education for their children, must look out for.

This is because visa fraud and deportation remain on the student’s immigration record, making them ineligible for any visa in the future, according to immigration experts.

They add that the best way to go about the procedure is to steer one’s own application process by applying directly on the college website where all rules and visa fees are stated clearly.

But while choosing to go via an agent, one needs to check, verify and ask the agents about their credentials along with their company’s; how long they have been in this business; the number of successful cases they have processed.

This includes checking the reviews, testimonials, and ratings of the agency before hiring them for services.

Submitting fake academic or bank documents to the embassy and/or college and sending students to non-recognised universities are some of the most common types of fraud committed by fake agents.

The tell-tale signs of a fake agent

Academic queries – According to immigration consultant Y-Axis, if your agent is more committed to building a rosy picture of your future abroad rather than talking about SAT-GPA, in all probability you have run into a fake agent. Ask him to explain things like accreditation, course credits, academic calendar, practical training opportunities, etc.

Lofty claims – Fake visa agents assure you of a three-year work permit on graduation, which would let you stay on and work in Canada, applying for a permanent residency in due course of time. They also mislead students by saying that they are a representative of an established study abroad consultant/agent.

A talking shop – According to Harjiv Singh, Founder of Salwan Media Ventures, if the agent talks more than he listens, he is incompetent. He doesn’t listen as he is focused on his own agenda, which is to make money.

Admission/visa guaranteed – an immigration consultant is not authorised to make any commitment on behalf of the educational institution abroad. Also an agent cannot guarantee an assured visa in exchange for money. No agent can coerce the embassy to issue a visa.

Contradictory claims – There are times when there is a difference between what the agent claims and what the official university website says. For instance, it is a major red flag if an agent says that a student can just work without attending classes, while the university website and the official embassy have different rules regarding work-while-study.

According to immigration experts, most agents misguide about fees. The agents offer to deposit ‘Application fee’ in five universities, but end up depositing it in only two-three universities.

Checklist for parents:

* The university/college the ward is applying to is legit

* Validity or accreditation of the course the students are applying to

* Valid visa degree upon completion of the course

* Getting the documents in order

* Self-verification of documents rather than blindly trusting agents

Will New Delhi and Hanoi inch closer to BrahMos deal during Vietnamese defence minister’s visit?

0

One year after the signing of a ‘Joint Vision Statement on Defence Partnership towards 2030’, the India-Vietnam show of camaraderie will be on full display once again as the country’s Defence Minister General Phan Van Giang travels to New Delhi on a two-day visit starting Sunday.

General Giang, who is also a Politburo member of Vietnam’s Communist Party and Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, will call on Rajnath Singh on Monday as the two ministers advance defence ties.

The visit follows last month’s talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vietnam PM Pham Minh Chinh on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Hiroshima.

During their discussion, the two leaders noted the steady progress achieved in the bilateral Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and agreed to enhance high-level exchanges and deepen bilateral trade and investment ties.

They also discussed opportunities in the fields of defence, building resilient supply chains, energy, science and technology, human resource development, culture and people-to-people ties.

Interestingly, after the Philippines, Vietnam too has shown interest in acquiring BrahMos – the potent offensive missile weapon system developed through the joint venture between India (DRDO) and Russia (NPOM) – to strengthen its coastal defence operations.

More than a decade ago, Russia had supplied Vietnam with mobile coastal missile system Bastion with a unified supersonic homing anti-ship missile Yakhont.

Vietnam remains an important pillar of India’s Act East Policy and a key partner of its Indo-Pacific Vision underlined by PM Modi’s Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) initiative.

Signalling its desire to have a less intertwined future with China, Hanoi has been deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with New Delhi since 2016 to maintain peace, prosperity and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.

Last June, during his visit to the Vietnamese capital at the invitation of his counterpart, Singh spotlighted that both countries share a rich history of civilisational and cultural linkages spanning over 2,000 years.

Besides signing the Joint Vision Statement on India-Vietnam Defence Partnership towards 2030 which significantly enhances the scope and scale of existing bilateral defence cooperation, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Mutual Logistics Support was also inked during the Defence Minister’s Vietnam visit.

This was dubbed as a major step towards simplifying procedures for mutually beneficial logistic support and was the first such major agreement which Vietnam signed with any country.

India also handed over 12 High-Speed Guard Boats to the Southeast Asian country at Hong Ha Shipyard in Hai Phong as Singh invited Vietnam to become a part of India’s defence industrial transformation through enhanced cooperation that will take forward PM Modi’s vision of ‘Make in India, Make for the World’.

“Defence engagements between the two nations have diversified to include wide-ranging contacts between the services, military-to-military exchanges, high-level visits, capacity building and training programmes, cooperation in UN Peacekeeping, ship visits and bilateral exercises,” the Indian Defence Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

Two months ago, Vietnam’s Minister of Public Security General To Lam was in New Delhi for two days with a high-ranking delegation at the invitation of National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval.

A detailed plan to enhance the linkages on strategic, security and defence matters was worked out as both expressed concerns about actions and incidents in the South China Sea that erode trust in the region.

With India being the current chair of the world’s leading group of developed and emerging economies (G20), Vietnam has thanked India for highlighting the perspectives and concerns of the Global South and always supporting its role in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

India and Vietnam also have convergences in the wider maritime context. In October 2021, India and ASEAN adopted a Joint Statement on Cooperation on the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific for Peace, Stability and Prosperity in the Region.

All three service Chiefs of the Indian Armed Forces have visited Vietnam over the last few years while the Commanders-in-Chief of the Vietnam People’s Navy and Vietnam People’s Air Force have visited India.

Two Indian Naval Ships, INS Shivalik and INS Kamorta paid port calls to Ho Chi Minh City Port in November 2022 and INS Delhi and INS Satpura made a port call at Da Nang Port from May 19 to May 22, last month.

Tamil Nadu police are in the dock after a Scheduled Caste youth, who was in custody of the Puliyangudi police in Tenkasi district, died.

The 23-year-old youth, Thangasamy was taken into custody for allegedly supplying liquor bottles to a woman for its illegal sale.

He was remanded in judicial custody, and after he complained of uneasiness, he was brought to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TvMCH).

The post-mortem report of the youth revealed the presence of seven irregular reddish-brown abrasions on his body. The report also revealed that the injuries had taken place three to four days before death.

The Tirunelveli Medical college hospital did not reveal the cause of the death as the chemical analysis report of the viscera and histopathological examination of tissues have not come.

Joint Action Committee against Custodial Torture alleged that the Perumpalpuram police were trying to tamper with the post-mortem’s video footage.

Advocate Ramesh of CPI(ML), who is spearheading the agitation, alleged the hospital administration refused to provide the family of the victim with video footage shot during the post-mortem. He said that as per a 2020 Madras High Court order, the relatives of the custodial death victims should be allowed to videograph his body. He also alleged that the city police personnel deleted the video of the post-mortem shot by the relatives of Thangasamy.

Even after the DMK government led by Stalin has assured that there won’t be any custodial torture, the police has been “resorting to custodial torture”, Ramesh said.

After a lull, the death of a Scheduled Caste youth allegedly by custodial torture has put the Tamil Nadu police in the dock.

C. Rajeev, Director, Centre for Policy and Development Studies, while speaking to IANS, said: “Tamil Nadu police have to explain the exact cause of death, and the post-mortem report has revealed that the injuries are three to four days old. Thangasamy was taken into custody on June 11 while he passed away on June 14. A thorough probe is the need of the hour and those in government must act against such inhuman actions by the police.”

Shaken by internal surveys, MP BJP banks entirely on ‘Modi magic’

0

The BJP, which has been in power in Madhya Pradesh for almost two decades, is leaving no stone unturned to counter the impact of anti-incumbency in the upcoming state Assembly elections.

In the last two decades, the Congress has ruled the state barely for 15 months. This is the reason why the saffron party is facing a strong anti-incumbency in the state and is mulling to contest the elections by keeping Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s face in the front.

Even the recent internal surveys were not encouraging for the party, and thus it is entirely banking on the ‘Modi magic’ to diminish the impact of anti-incumbency.

The interference of BJP’s national team is continuously increasing in the state. National leaders are touring the state to interact with various sections to assess the ground situation.

The visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, party President J.P. Nadda along with other prominent national leaders will see a rise in the coming days.

Prime Minister Modi will visit Bhopal on June 27 and is likely to have a day halt in tribal-dominated Shahdol.

The BJP is trying to woo the tribal voters through the Prime Minister’s visit.

Decisions such as the Prime Minister’s visit to Madhya Pradesh on Tribal Pride Day, naming a railway station in Bhopal after Rani Kamlapati belonging to the tribal community, and now Modi’s visit to Shahdol show that the saffron party giving prominence to tribal voters.

In the 2018 Assembly elections, the BJP suffered a major loss in the tribal belt as out of 47 seats, the BJP could win only 16 seats while the Congress bagged 30 seats. Overall, the tribal vote played an important role in keeping the BJP away from power.

The BJP is trying to strengthen its hold among tribals.

In 2018, out of 230 assembly seats in the state, Congress won 114 seats while the BJP bagged 109 seats.

With elections drawing near, Congress leaders have intensified their attacks on Prime Minister Modi.

Abbas Hafeez, Vice President of Congress’ media wing, says that in whichever state elections are held, “the Prime Minister is seen in the role of the Publicity Minister. The same happened in Karnataka, but the public had made up its mind and thrown the BJP out of power. The same is going to happen in Madhya Pradesh as well. No matter how many visits Prime Minister Modi makes, the people of the state have made up their minds to oust the BJP from power”.

On the other hand, BJP spokesperson Pankaj Chaturvedi says, “Narendra Modi is a matter of pride for the BJP organisation, a politician like him is leading us. As far as the face is concerned, the face of the BJP is the symbol of a lotus. The election will be fought on the same symbol, the leadership is of the Prime Minister and the issue of the election will be development.”

Political analysts believe that the Assembly elections are very important for both the political parties.

The BJP is not getting good feedback from the party regarding the state government, so the party is trying to keep the face of the Prime Minister forward and contest on the issue of Hindutva, which can benefit the party in the state. This is the reason that along with the national leadership, visits of Prime Minister Modi are continuously increasing in the state.

Ayodhya saints call for ban on ‘Adipurush’

Irked over the dialogues of the film, saints in Ayodhya have demanded a ban on the film ‘Adipurush’.

This is the second time in a year that saints have spoken out against the film.

Last year in October, the seers had objected to the ‘distortion’ seen in the film’s trailer.

They claimed that the film has misrepresented the characters of Ramayana and shown Hindu deities in a ‘distorted’ manner — Hanuman — being shown with a beard and without a moustache.

Head priest of Ram Janmabhoomi, Acharya Satyendra Das, said that despite earlier protests, the filmmakers have misrepresented the characters of Ramayana and shown Hindu deities in a ‘distorted’ manner.

“The dialogues are shameful and the film should be banned immediately,” he added.

“Lord Ram, Lord Hanuman as well as Ravana have been presented in totally different manner. It depicts our deities in completely different form against what we have read and known so far,” Das added.

Raju Das, the priest of Hanuman Garhi temple, too sought a ban on the movie.

“Bollywood is hell bent on distorting Hindu religion. The movie ‘Adipurush’ is a classic example of how it is least concerned about Hindu sentiments,” said Raju Das.

The Mani Ram Das Chhavni Peeth, the most powerful body of Ayodhya saints, too has also backed the demand for a movie ban.

Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar shot dead in Canada

Canada-based pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was declared a ‘wanted terrorist’ by the Indian government, was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen at the parking lot of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in the Punjabi-dominated Surrey city of British Columbia province.

He was the president of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara.

Nijjar, a resident of a village in Jalandhar, was associated with the separatist organisation, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), which is banned in India.

He had played a key role in organising the Khalistan referendum in Brampton city.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) last year filed a charge sheet against four persons, including Nijjar, in connection with a conspiracy to kill Hindu priest Kamaldeep Sharma in Jalandhar on January 31, 2021.

The three others charge-sheeted in the case are Kamaljeet Sharma and Ram Singh, who attacked the priest on the directions of Nijjar and his associate Arshdeep Singh alias Prabh.

According to the NIA, the conspiracy was hatched by accused Arshdeep and Nijjar, both based in Canada, to disturb peace and disrupt the communal harmony in Punjab by killing a Hindu priest.

India had asked the Canadian authorities to take action against Nijjar for his alleged involvement in terrorist acts in Punjab.

Last year the Punjab Police had sought the extradition of Nijjar as he was wanted in cases related to acts of reviving terrorism in the state.

The police was demanding his extradition in pursuance of a lookout circular (LOC) issued on January 23, 2015, and a red corner notice issued on March 14, 2016.

Nijjar was designated as an ‘individual terrorist’ by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in July 2020.

The NIA said Nijjar had been proactively involved in recruiting, training, financing and operationalising pro-Khalistan terrorist modules for spreading terror in India. He was involved in giving inflammatory and hateful speeches through social media platforms.

The NIA had attached Nijjar’s property in his village in Punjab in another case.

A cash reward of Rs 10 lakh was declared against the Canada-based chief of pro-Khalistani outfit Khalistan Tiger Force, Nijjar.

Nijjar had been accused of killing Ripudaman Singh Malik, the man who was acquitted in the 1985 Air India terrorist bombing case, in Surrey last year.
