How Volunteers made Waari at Pandharpur a “Clean” Success!

2
waari Vitthala

Waari is a holy pilgrimage in Maharashtra that consists of lakhs of devotees walking about 250 km over several days. Waari is undertaken in the Hindu month of Aashaadh (around June-July) and devotees walk with Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi (palanquin) from Dehu and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi from Alandi to Pandharpur, where they offer their respects to Bhagwan Vitthala (also known as Vithoba or Panduranga, an avatar of Bhagwan Vishnu).

The participants in the Waari are called ‘Waarakaris’. In over 700 years of waari tradition, no stampede or chaos has ever taken place. Other groups also walk from southern states like Karnataka, Andhara Pradesh etc. The waarkaris are mainly agriculturists and many of them are poor. A chain of lakhs of men, women and children walking for miles with non-stop chants of Gyaanbaa-Tukaaraam on their lips, is an incredible spectacle.

India Today Mocks Yoga Through Inappropriate Pic of Baba Ramdev

Baba Ramdev

The newsweekly India Today has put an inappropriate image of Baba Ramdev doing a yoga asana on its cover page. The magazine chose an unusual photo of Baba Ramdev for its cover story titled ” “Power Yogi – How Baba Ramdev discovered commerce and turned spirituality on its head to emerge as a political, economic and cultural superbrand.”

Such tactics of paying back-handed compliments to Hindu religious/cultural icons are common place in the left-liberal mainstream media of Bharat. While India Today’s Doon-educated Chief Editor Aroon Purie will claim that their article just describes the incredible success story of Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved group which has disrupted the FMCG sector and earned revenues of around 5,000 crore in the last financial year, the completely inappropriate cover photo leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

As if on cue, Indian Express, HuffingtonPost India and the left-liberal propaganda site Scroll.in quickly published strikingly similar stories celebrating how Adarsh Liberals on twitter had a field day over the ‘India Today’ cover image –

‘India Today’ Puts Ramdev’s Behind On Cover, And Twitter Can’t Even…

It’s a weapon of mass disgustion’: Twitter trolls India Today’s cover image of the yoga guru Ramdev

Twitterati’s having so much fun with Baba Ramdev’s latest mag cover picture

Baba Ramdev has long been an object of ridicule for mainstream media (both news and entertainment). Even the brutal midnight crackdown by UPA-2 on sleeping anti-corruption protesters led by Baba Ramdev, in which an old woman Rajbala died, was largely trivialized while stories about Ramdev’s alleged escape in women’s dress made headlines.

The immense contribution that Baba Ramdev has made to revive the ancient Hindu sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda is lost on the Star-Bucks guzzling, ‘Game of Thrones’ watching, Formula-1 cheering deracinated urban yuppie that can be found in most metros. And this is the target audience for our English language media; so it comes as no surprise that mocking Baba Ramdev makes good business sense for them. Ideologically too, our media is trained to bring down any person who might promote pride in Hindu identity – this is classic sepoy behavior which acts as a front for new age colonial forces. And the same media houses hail communal Islamist politicians like Badruddin Ajmal as the ‘perfume baron’.

The repeated portrayal of Yoga as a ‘strange, exotic practice of contorting the body‘ and portraying leading Yoga gurus like Baba Ramdev as weird mavericks is a clear attempt at dissuading urban youth from adopting healthier Dharmic lifestyles. The contribution of Baba Ramdev to improving public health in Bharat and the potential his teachings have to lower public health costs is what objective journalism should ideally focus on. But there are many connected-to-roots twitterati who now understand the games a section of media plays in denigrating and mocking Hindu wisdom. This is what they had to say –

Amarnath Yatris Narrate Dreadful Experiences Amidst Kashmir ‘Protests’

As Amarnath Yatra struggles to continue amidst suspensions and resumptions because of violent Kashmir ‘protests’, yatris who have returned to their homes are narrating their horrible experiences. Hindi / local media has covered their experiences in detail; many of the yatris suffered serious threats and great inconvenience just because the local Muslim population was angry about the dead terrorist Burhan Wani and decided to take out their anger on travelling yatris.

Quoting and translating what a yatri named Vinod told Dainik Bhaskar, ” We were returning from Amarnath when young boys started pelting stones on our vehicle and broke all the window panes. They asked the people to get down from the bus. Then they blamed that we (the yatris) had killed their leader and that blood will be avenged by blood. We felt that our end may be near. They released us one by one after asking us to say ‘ Pakistan zindabad, Bharat murdabad’. We had to do anti national sloganeering to save our lives. I felt as if I am stuck in some other country”.

Sanskrit Language Enlightened The European Intellectuals

0
Sanskrit Language

It is for the astounding richness of the Sanskrit language that William Jones, a British colonial judge and linguist, first translated Kalidasa’s Shakuntala from the original Sanskrit into English in 1789 CE. This stirred the minds and hearts of some of the top European intellectuals of that era such as August and Friedrich Schlegel, Wilhelm von Humboldt, Johann Goethe, Gottfried Herder, Friedrich Schiller etc. Very impressed by the language and its philosophical plot the father of German literature (J. Goethe) learnt Sanskrit on his own. And he plunged into this ancient play Shakuntala for thirty years. He even wrote an insightful poem eulogizing this play. Again, George Forster translated Shakuntala into German in 1791. In a span of some decades, it sprouted 46 translations into fourteen European languages.

It was then that local residents of the village who are related to a Muslim SP leader – Aasgar, Nazim and one other youth barged into her home and tried to sexually assault her. When the girl protested, they thrashed her and threatened to throw acid on her face. After they left, the harassed girl tried to commit suicide by drinking pesticide. She was rushed to hospital for treatment. Police have arrested Aasgar and Nazim, while the third person is absconding.

What Ails Police Officers in Congress Ruled Karnataka?

Congress ruled Karnataka

With two police officers committing suicide within a week in Karnataka, several questions are being raised regarding the level of harassment prevailing in police departments due to a criminal nexus and interference by ruling party leaders. As per this OneIndia report, Deputy Superintendent of Police MS Ganapathi killed himself by hanging from the ceiling fan in his hometown. He has left an audio visual suicide note blaming senior police officers and Bengaluru Development and Town Planning Minister (and ex-Home Minister) KJ George & his son Rana George for driving him to death.

Asymmetry and Star-Dot-Star Colonialism

(This article is the 3rd part of a 4-part series. Read Part 1 and Part 2)

PART 3: Asymmetry and Star-Dot-Star Colonialism: Two Sides of the Same Coin

In Part 1, we saw that Star-Dot-Star colonialism is essentially a Win-Lose paradigm despite all claims to the contrary by the propagators and beneficiaries of such colonial ventures. Many studies show that exchanges under colonial frameworks have been grossly asymmetrical: be it in Bharat, Africa, Asian or the Latin American colonies. The value of wealth extracted has been of gigantic proportions when compared with the ‘investment in infrastructure and education’ by the colonizers.

Missing Youth In Kerala – Religious Radicalization & Conversions

0
Missing Youth from kerala

Recent news from manoramaonline.com has raised serious questions on the aggressive religious radicalization and conversions going on in Kerala. The state has recently seen 21 missing youth, who have most likely joined IS as per various reports.  The missing youth include 2 couples; both the boys and 1 girl were Christian, while the other girl was Hindu, and all of them converted to Islam. The Hindu girl, Nimisha, was a student of Kasargod medical college and was indoctrinated, married and converted in just 4 days.

As per ManoramaOnline, “Kasaragod district panchayat member V.P.P. Mustafa said that during Eid, the parents of two missing youth received this WhatsApp message ‘We are not coming back. Here there is Divine Rule. You also should join us’. We have joined IS to fight US for attacking Muslims’, read another message.”

The father of the above mentioned 2 Christian boys has revealed that his sons Eesa and Yahiya, who along with their wives (original names – Nimisha & Mariam) were inspired by the Islamic preacher Zakir Naik.

While the parents and opposition parties are aggressively asking the state government to hasten the probe, unconfirmed reports suggest more people are missing from different parts of Kerala. Various Hindu and Christian organizations are demanding that this issue cannot be swept under the carpet.

Here are the details of people missing in kerala – at least 4 of them are Christian converts and 1 is Hindu. There are 2 children as well in the missing group. The parents of missing youth are narrating how they turned into such hardliners. Most are well educated, some are doctors and engineers, and were doing good financially. Quoting from  Indian Express, a parent says,

“My eldest son Dr. Ejas and his wife, a dental student, took their two-year-old son away, too. Ejas’s wife was carrying their second child and preparing for her final-year exam. My second son Shias, a management graduate, left with his pregnant wife, a physiotherapist“.

The Hindu girl Nimisha’s mother has expressed her anguish and met the Kerala CM. As per reports, she tried to stop her daughter from proceeding but was not successful. There is no doubt that religious extremists are leaving no stone unturned to lure youth into the fanatic ideology of IS – they have infiltrated educational institutions, hospitals etc. while Muslim organizations are not truly bothered about it except defending Islam ideologically.

There appears to be an industry of religious conversion running in Kerala. While Christian organizations lead in religious conversions, Islamic preachers seem to be leading in religious radicalization. In 2012, the then Kerala CM had revealed that a total number of 7713 persons were converted to Islam during 2006-2012. Interestingly, he had said no statistics were available as to the number converted to Christianity during the period. Among those converted to Islam during 2009-12, 2667 were young women of which 2195 were Hindus and 492 were Christians.

Quoting this IndiaToday article of 2012 – “According to top sources in police as many as 15 lakhs have been converted to Christianity in the last 20 years as per official statistics provided by the State Converted Christian Corporation. “Muslims have only two institutions and Hindus only one who have the authority to convert. But every Christian church has this right” said a top police official.

The current Kerala CM, Pinarayi Vijayan has termed even discussion on this worrying development as an ‘attempt to create anti-muslim sentiments’ and issued the anodyne statement ‘terrorism has no religion.’ Though the state government has said that it will coordinate with central agencies in the probe, the CM remains defiant on tackling the issues of religious conversion and radicalization by both Islamic forces and Church organizations.

Kashmiri Hindus Besieged in Valley In Chilling Rerun of 1990 Exodus

Kashmiri Hindus Besieged

It was déjà vu for the Kashmiri Hindus living in Haal transit camp, Pulwama. The frenzy whipped up by terrorist Burhan Wani’s death saw baying mobs of Kashmiri Muslims surround their camp, pelting stones and shouting threatening slogans, with only a skeletal security force for protection.  It was 19 Jan 1990 all over again.
