Nepal Janta Party – a new political party making waves in Nepal

After decades of experiencing communist politics, people in Nepal are looking for an alternative. Meet Nepal Janta Party- A new political party that is making waves in the country.

Nepal Janta Party or NJP is fast emerging as a new political force in Nepal. Within just 2.5 months, it has added more than 40,000 members and has even won 17 seats in the local elections. Interestingly its poll symbol is also Kamal. Sounds familiar?

It draws inspiration from Deendayal Upadhyay, the leading ideologue of RW in India who along with Syama Prasad Mukherjee laid down the foundations of Jan Sangh, precursor to BJP.

NJP’s National Vice President Khemnath Acharya also has a Sangh background and he had played a key role in bringing shaligram stones from Nepal for making idol of Lord SriRam.

Although the party was registered way back in 2008 but it has fast gaining a new ground in Nepal. Reason? Demographic shift. Hindus make up 81% of the population but in the last few years their numbers have dwindled.

NJP wants to restore Nepal’s Hindu identity and bring development to the country. It is preparing to contest elections on more than half seats of the Nepal parliament in the next elections hoping to succeed.

However they have a very long road ahead. As of today, Nepal has only 7 national political parties of which Nepali Congress and Communist Party of Nepal (along with its various factions) are the major ones.
