NCP leader Jitendra Awhad bares his Hinduphobic fangs again, says Ram Navami & Hanuman Janmotsav are meant to spark riots

NCP leader Jitendra Awhad, known for his controversial Hinduphobic statements, made another similar remark while addressing an NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) public rally on April 21. Interestingly, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar was present on the stage when Awhad made the remarks.

“A riot took place in Aurangabad. I mean Ram Navami and what is that festival of Maruti? Haan… Hanuman Jayanti. Are these two festivals made for riots only? The atmosphere in the cities deteriorated during these festivals like never before. According to my understanding of Mumbai City, and the people living in Mumbai and its surroundings, the people of Mumbai and the surrounding area knew that there is some plan behind this all. I otherwise don’t dare to say anything in front of Saheb (Sharad Pawar). But it is my firm opinion that the upcoming year is a year of communal riots”, he said in his speech.

Ram Navami and Hanuman Janmotsav are celebrated by Hindus to seek the blessing of Prabhu Sri Ram and Bhagwan Mahabali Hanuman. Besides organizing pujas and bhandaras (annadaan), Hindus carry out Shobha Yatras during these festivals. Stone-pelting and attacking Shobha Yatras during Hindu festivals has become an Islamist toolkit with ‘secular’ politicians providing cover fire to the Islamists.

Like every year, there was violence during Ram Navami and Hanuman Janmotsav this year too across several Bharatiya states. The fact-finding committee investigating the violence in West Bengal held both Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Bengal police responsible for the attack on Hindus by shielding the Islamists.

In the meanwhile, BJP leader Advocate Vivekanand Gupta has filed a complaint against Awhad for his anti-Hindu statement. The complaint has been filed with both the Thane and Mumbai police. “The statement made by Awhad is not only provocative but is an attempt to create communal riots in the state. The said statement has also hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. His statement is a deliberate attempt to promote religious enmity between different groups”, news outlet ANI quotes Gupta’s letter.

“Awhad by his utterances has thus committed an offence under sections 153 A, 295 A, 298 and 505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). That the said sections were inserted to prevent an attack on the religious feelings or beliefs of Hindus. Awhad with a deliberate intention has uttered the said words and this has committed an offence which is punishable by law”, his letter further notes.

In his letter, Gupta also accused Awhad of hurting Hindu sentiments deliberately. He says Awhad knows what he is saying and alleged that the NCP leader made the remarks to provoke and cause communal riots and hurt the feelings of Hindus. Given these facts, Gupta urged the police to take action against Awhad under the relevant laws.

Awhad, who is the elected representative of the Muslim-dominated Kalwa-Mumbra constituency, deliberately referred to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar as Aurangabad. He is known for hating Hindu Dharma and traditions. He was the Housing Development Minister in the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

Awhad has repeatedly praised Islamist tyrants while spewing venom against Hindus. In January this year, he opined that Aurangzeb was not a Hindu hater even though he was cruel while defending his party colleague Ajit Pawar who had said that Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was not a Dharamveer.

“Shivaji Maharaj is there only because Aurangzeb, Afzal Khan, and Shaista Khan were there”, Awhad says in a video that went viral on social media (SM) in February 2023. After facing backlash on SM, Awhad justified his stance in a tweet where he equated Ravan Duryodhan, Karn, with the Adil Shahis and Mughals while adding if people could explain the existence of Prabhu Sri Ram, Sri Krishna-Arjun, and Shivray without the existence of the aforementioned. He even questioned the Bharat freedom struggle without the British.

Awhad and his hooligans have harassed common people and those opposed to his views and ideology. In November 2022, he led a group of hooligans to forcibly stop the screening of the Marathi movie Har Har Mahadev. They even manhandled moviegoers.

Earlier, he had civil engineer Anant Karmuse abducted and assaulted at his Thane bungalow. Thane resident Anant Karmuse was abducted on the night of April 5, 2020, by policemen who then took him to Awhad’s bungalow for supposedly putting up a post against the then-minister.
