Ghatkopar residents protested against a Muslim burial ground replacing a public park. A report by Mirror Now quoted residents who registered their protests. They highlighted the environmental damage the move will cause.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) constructed the public park to increase the green cover. The civic body planted 10500 trees of various species in the park. Locals expressed their displeasure at the BMC’s decision to cut down the trees to make way for the burial ground. One of the residents highlighted that the city was already turning into a concrete jungle, and destroying the park would only add to the woes of Mumbaikars. Another protesting resident said BMC is destroying the park with many rare tree species.
Locals demanded the civic body change its decision and move the burial ground to some other place so that the park, a rare green space for a city like Mumbai, is saved.
