West Bengal: Congress leader demanded Muslim Deputy Chief Minister in the State

Amid controversies over Mamata Banerjee’s decision to hike the salary of Imams, Muazzins and Priests, State Congress leader Koustav Bagchi demanded to appoint a Muslim MLA as Deputy Chief Minister or Home Minister.

In a Facebook post, Bagchi, without taking any name, challenged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to appoint a Muslim as Deputy Chief Minister of the State. He also criticised Mamata Banerjee for only doing lip service about the well-being of the Muslim minorities. If she is earnest about the betterment of Muslim minorities, then she should appoint a Muslim as Deputy Chief Minister.

Political analysts say that since Congress and TMC joined I.N.D.I.A at the national level, to counter NDA and Modi, the West Bengal Congress has lost all credibility as an opposition party. Also, the anti-Mamta face of the State Congress, Koustav Bagchi, became silent. Suddenly, he made this comment only to become relevant in the political arena, they say.

However, the top leadership of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress has not made any comments on this demand so far.

Notably, Koustav Bagchi is a Member and Spokesperson of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee. Over the years, he remained very vocal against the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC Govt. and its policies.
