Mohana Chandran’s Ghar Wapsi

Mohana Chandran, a Hindu, was forced to convert to Christianity for marriage. Something bothered him during his married life. He realised that the feeling that he had changed his religion was wrong, which led to unrest within.

Mohana heads a research institute in Europe. His realisation that he cannot give up his identity, culture, and roots motivated him to choose ‘Ghar Wapsi’. Finally, after 17 long years, this Hindutva devotee returned to his own religion.

In 2006, under particular circumstances, Mohana, a native of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, converted to marry a Christian girl. They have lived in Dubai and Bangalore and have six children.

Even though he converted, his wife allowed Mohana to participate in Hindu celebrations and follow rituals. However, somewhere in the back of his mind, a sense of unease remained.

Sharing this inner conflict with his wife, Mohana decided to reconnect ritually with his Hindu identity. After adopting Ghar Wapsi, he obtained the necessary documents to avoid legal and social problems that may arise in the future.

On Saturday, Mohana Chandran reached the Arya Samaj in Saidpet, Hyderabad, Telangana. Under the guidance of a local priest, he and his family converted to his old religion with all the rituals.

Mohana said that he felt relieved of a burden through Ghar Wapsi. He thanked friends for their support and pointed out that his wife and family members’ backing was huge.
