A much-circulated myth about radical Islamists lay shattered when several, including a lady doctor, were charged for forced conversion to Islam in Mangaluru. The misbelief is that only illiterate Muslims try to convert. All the accused were booked under the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill, 2022, for allegedly attempting to convert a young Hindu girl to Islam forcefully. 

Shivani Poojary (name changed), the 20-year-old victim, used to work at New Fancy Bazar in Mangaluru. She used to recharge her mobile at a shop owned by one Khaleel (an accused) in Bikarnakatte Kaikamba. The grooming jihadi somehow befriended the young Hindu girl and offered her a better job and package. This happened in early 2021. 

On January 14, 2021, Khaleel took her to his relative’s house at Kallapu, Ullal, 10 km south of Mangaluru. Once there, the accused forced Shivani to offer namaz and read the Quran. This was also where Khaleel reportedly sexually abused the young Hindu girl. The rapist gave her a burqa and coerced her to convert to Islam, accepting the name Ayesha. 

On January 17, 2021, the dejected young girl went home but kept the incident a secret from her family, fearing negative publicity. The New Indian Express reported that she found a job at the house of the influential Yenepoya family for eight months. It is part of a vast conglomerate belonging to Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, who owns a medical college, several businesses, and Islamic organizations. He has also been on the District Wakf Board and was the chairman for several years.

This was where Shivani met a Muslim lady named Sainaz, who also worked at the same Yenepoya bungalow. Sainaz offered the victim a job at Kasargod and enticed her with better pay. Incidentally, Kunhi, too, is originally from Kasargod. At least one incident of sexual abuse committed by a doctor from Kerala upon a lady patient was reported from the Yenepoya group of hospitals. There have been other controversies too.

Shivani moved to the private residence of Dr. Jameela and her husband, Dr. Sayyad, in Kasargod, Kerala, 50 km south of Mangaluru. Jameela is a famous obstetrician who practices in Mangaluru. It is unknown whether Jameela also practices at Kunhi’s hospitals and medical colleges in Mangaluru. He has plenty of them in and around the region. His business interests include timber, paints, real estate, hotels, and logistics.

Shivani said that in the beginning, Jameela asked her to cook and clean. Later she was pressured to present herself as Ayesha, wear Burqa and live like a Muslim. The mental trauma soon caught up to Shivani, who resigned from the job and returned home to Managluru in October this year. Conversion mafias also have this habit of letting go of victims at the slightest sign of mental illness, and Jameela, a doctor, was in a perfect position to evaluate.  

The then 19-year-old Hindu victim’s woes did not end there. Another grooming jihadi named Aiman began to pester her using the social media platform Instagram. Aiman lived in the high ranges of Bhadravathi, 200 km northeast of Mangaluru. Shivani was coerced to reach Bhadravathi, where she was allegedly forced to share the bed with him. The mobile shop owner Khaleel and his relatives are suspected to be behind the whole conversion and grooming sequence of events. It remains unknown whether this gang groomed other non-Muslim girls.

This was when the frustrated victim and her mother approached Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) activists, who ultimately took the victim to the police. Based on the mother’s complaint, Mangaluru’s Pandeshwar women’s police station registered cases under Sections 3 and 5 of the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Ordinance 2022, as well as sections 354 (assault), 354(A) (sexual harassment) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. 

Other than Khaleel (Accused 1), Jameela (A2), and Aiman (A3), the FIR also mentions ‘Others’ as the fourth accused. 

Section 3 of the ordinance prohibits conversion from one religion to another by misrepresentation, force, fraud, undue influence, coercion, allurement, or the promise of marriage. If any person reconverts to their immediate previous religion, the same shall not be deemed conversion under this Act. This means that Shivani was indeed converted to Islam somewhere along the line. 

News18 Kannada reported that the Imam of Bhadravathi is accused of forced conversion in this case. Many grooming gangs prefer Kerala for conversion to Islam since the state does not have anti-conversion laws. Had this conversion happened in Kerala, this case would not have been filed. This is why universal laws are needed to curb such crimes against humanity and Hindus. 

Section 5 of the ordinance prescribes imprisonment of three years, which may extend to five years, and a fine of rupees twenty-five thousand. The detention may extend to ten years if the victim is of unsound mind. The Court shall also grant appropriate compensation payable by the accused to the victim of said conversion, which may extend to a maximum of five lakh rupees in addition to the fine.

Mundadiguttu Sadananda Marla Deepthi Marlah alias Maryam

Interestingly, in January, National Investigation Agency (NIA) officers raided the residence of BM Basha, son of renowned Kannada writer and former Ullal Congress MLA late B M Idinabba. They arrested Basha’s daughter-in-law, Mundadiguttu Sadananda Marla Deepthi Marlah alias Maryam for alleged links to the terrorist organization ISIS. Basha resides at Mastikatta village, a short walk from Ullal, where Khaleel took Shivani.

Like Shivani, Maryam was initially a Hindu named Deepthi Marla. When she studied in the UAE, she got ‘attracted’ to Islam, married a Muslim from her native place, and converted.

Maryam was in touch with Ajmala, an ISIS member and a granddaughter of the late Idinabba. Ajmala fled to Syria a few years ago and is believed to be a hardcore ISIS member. Ajmala was one of 13 people from Kasaragod, Kerala, who had fled the country to join ISIS in 2016. The investigation revealed that Deepthi Marla was the kingpin of an ISIS conspiracy along with Mohammed Ameen.

Around that time, 21 people fled from Kerala to join ISIS. In August 2021, NIA arrested two women planning to join ISIS in West Asia from Kerala. Maryam, Ameen, and their associates ran propaganda channels on social media platforms, including Instagram, Hoop, and Telegram, to recruit people to ISIS. All the accused were highly educated and equally radicalized.

How the Media Justifies Grooming Jihad/Forced Conversion

Last Thursday, serial Islamist apologist The Times of India (TOI) reported that Mangaluru East Police had arrested three people in connection with the alleged assault on a 20-year-old student of a private college in Karkala. They added that the student, Sayyed Raseem Ummar (20), was assaulted and threatened by the accused after pulling him out of a bus at Nanthoor Junction.

They also elaborated on the whole story of the so-called victim but failed to report what led to the attack. Karkala is 50 km northeast of Mangaluru, while Nanthoor Jn is a four-minute walk from New Fancy Bazar. This area seems to have become a hub for grooming jihadis to prey on vulnerable and young Hindu girls.

HinduPost does not endorse unnecessary violence but decided to dig deeper and found that it could be a case of grooming jihad. TOI purposefully failed to report that Ummar was traveling with a Hindu girl. Hindustan Times (HT) did mention this angle but slyly hinted towards involvement of ‘right-wing organizations’ while admitting that four ‘unknown’ people had entered the bus and allegedly targeted Ummar.

HT quoted unnamed police sources as saying that while there are ‘reports’ that members of the Bajrang Dal were involved in the incident, the Bajrang Dal has denied the same. Even if we give the benefit of doubt to HT that they did indeed talk to a ‘police source’, the way they frame their questions is designed to elicit answers that further their anti-Hindu narrative.

HT then went to claim that ‘moral policing’ by ‘right-wing groups’ (media dog-whistle for Sangh parivar/Hindutva outfits, Islamist and evangelical groups are never smeared with that label) is rising in the Dakshina Kannada district.

Now, this statement might be true. Like the Abrahamics, Hindus, too, have human rights and are obliged to protect their brothers and sisters. The Dakshina Kannada region has become a hub of terrorist activities in the past few years. Karnataka is the only state in South Bharat that elected BJP to power. Since then, a particular pattern has emerged from the area.

Radical Islamists led by the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI) in cahoots with terrorist organizations like ISIS planned and executed the Halal controversy, where Hindu traders were wiped out of the region. Simultaneously came the Hijab row that spread throughout Bharat, creating issues for students even today. The latest was the pressure cooker bomber Mohammad Shariq. Hindu temples in the region escaped thanks to sheer luck, and Shariq hurt himself badly.

All these extreme national security issues originated in this very Dakshina Kannada region. Islamist radicals have kept the local police busy for the wrong reasons. Such anti-nationals have blossomed with the help of anti-Hindu left-liberal media houses that justify every wrong committed against Hindus. Hindus have to protect themselves and their motherland, and naturally, they have begun resisting atrocities. Karnataka Hindus are watching the plight of their Hindu neighbors, especially in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

How the Radical Islamist Organizations Justify Grooming Jihad/Forced Conversion

Islamists justify their actions even when the Hindu victims of grooming jihad and forced conversion commit suicide. Within a month of relocating to Mangaluru from Bagalkot district, a poor Hindu family ended up dead – Nagesh Shiraguppi, 30 first killed his wife Vijayalakshmi, 26, and their children Sapna, 8, and Samarth, 4; and then killed himself.

Nagesh worked as a truck driver, while Vijayalakshmi did domestic chores in the neighborhood. Mangaluru South Police registered a suo moto case under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (abetment to suicide) against Noor Jahan (50) from Bejai and arrested her. Bejai is 3 km from New Fancy Bazar.

Noor Jahan allegedly conspired and converted Vijayalakshmi to Islam. Before hanging himself, Nagesh had sent a voice message to Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Chandrashekhar, wherein he accused Noor Jahan of abetment of suicide. Vijayalakshmi worked as a maid at the house of Noorjehan.

Noor Jahan is a grooming jihad matchmaker who allegedly promised Vijayalakshmi that she would find a new Muslim partner if she left her husband. The Hindu lady fell for the trick. Nagesh learned about Vijayalakshmi’s plans to convert to Islam along with their children and opposed the move. Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said, “Vijayalakshmi told Noor Jahan about her husband’s torture, and the latter had been persuading her to divorce Nagesh.”

Shaheeda Tasnim, president of the radical Islamist organization Women India Movement (WIM), termed Noor Jahan’s arrest ‘politically motivated’ owing to pressure from politicians and Sangh Parivar. Tasnim claimed that Noor Jahan did not try to convert the deceased woman to Islam. Nagesh might have falsely accused Noor Jahan out of vengeance, she added, without remorse.

Tasnim quickly added that vested interests (Hindus) target Muslim and Christian communities in the name of religious conversion. “Police department should stop harassing Noor Jahan with the lame excuse of a death note (sic). She should be released immediately,” Tasnim demanded.

While the anti-Hindu Daijiworld published this rant as such, Islamist/Marxist apologists at The Hindu even failed to mention the accused was named Noor Jahan. The gravity of the issue can be measured by the fact that all these horrors on Hindus are from one vicinity in one city of Karnataka and happened within the past year.

Incidentally, this is also the South Bharat where Vijay Kamble, Billapuram Nagaraju, Basavaraj Madivalapaa Badiger, Ravi Nimbargi, Mahesh Kolli, K Lakshmipathi, and many other young Hindu boys were killed by Islamists for falling in love with Muslim girls. Secularism is a one-way street as far as Islam is concerned.

11:40 AM, Dec 1: An earlier version of this article mentioned that the Shiraguppi Hindu family had committed suicide, whereas it was a case of familicide. The husband Nagesh had first killed his wife and two children and then killed himself, after he found out that his wife had been brainwashed to convert to Islam and divorce him by a Muslim woman. The error is regretted.
