The bond between man and animal, and the divinity at the heart of all living beings is something that Dharma teaches us. Yet another example of that has come to light, albeit as a result of inhuman barbarity by those who can only be called Adharmik Rakshasas.

BJP worker Avijit (Abhijit) Sarkar was brutally lynched to death on May 2 by TMC goons, marking the start of a terrible post-poll pogrom that has left dozens dead, hundreds raped or molested and over 40,000 Hindus displaced from their homes. Avijit’s body, which has undergone two post-mortems and a DNA test after his family was unable to identify it, was finally handed over for last rites a few days back as per a court order.

Avijit was a dog lover who had adopted many strays in and around his locality of Narkeldanga, North Kolkata. Now, images have emerged which show a dog sitting with a forlorn expression at the site where the deceased’s shraddh (post-cremation rite) was performed.

Avijit had broadcast a video on Facebook just before he was dragged into the streets and murdered. In that video, a tearful Avijit narrated how the goons had not even spared the puppies which one of his adopted dogs had recently birthed. “Aara ki Manush? (Are they even humans?),” he had beseeched.
