Tamil web series ‘Godman’ on Zee 5 demonizes Brahmins and promotes Hinduphobia

A new Tamil series titled ‘Godman’ is set to go on air on 12th June 2020 on Zee 5 Tamil. The show has been directed by Babu Yogeswaran and produced by Elango Raghupathy. The repeated attack on Hindu religion has become fashionable throughout the country. However, in Tamil Nadu it gets coupled with a deep rooted hatred for the minority Brahmin community (who are used to target Hindu Dharma as a whole) and promoting ‘Periyarist’ mind-set.

The trailer makes the derogatory intention of the makers absolutely clear. There are abuses spewed about Brahmins and one of the lead characters is shown in a saffron robe that is generally representative of Sadhus belonging to the Swaminarayan sect. Besides, the hero is a drunkard whom the ‘Swami’ wishes to nominate as his successor. Explicit sex scenes involving this ‘hero’ chosen as successor by the Swami are further used to subliminally link Hindu religion with sex and sleaze.

The trailer also shows a weapon being hidden inside a Hindu holy book, the Hindu Swami being taken away by police, and the tag line ‘An Unholy Story’ leaves little doubt about the Hindu-bashing storyline.

As Indu Makkal Katchi (IMK) leader Arjun Sampath says “the series has been purposely made with the intention of instigating caste hatred, offending a particular community and insulting saffron. Movies and shows hurting Hindu religion are being released often and legal recourse must be taken to stop such repeated attempts by the film fraternity to insult Hindu religion”. It is worth mentioning here that IMK is taking legal recourse to stop the telecast of this series.

Other leaders of the Hindu community in Tamil Nadu (TN) have come forward to condemn the makers and demanded withdrawal of the series. Hindu Munnani leader Krishnamurthy has alleged that religious conversion mafia is sponsoring such shows and films. Mr Ramanathan, Chairman of Coimbatore based Brahmin association Rashtriya Sanatana Seva Sangh in his telephonic conversation with Elango Raghupathy expresses his anguish and questions whether he would dare to produce a web series on sexual assault cases by Christian pastors which is a reality? He also accuses Elango of targeting the Brahmin community because the community never retaliates.

The director is a ‘Tamil separatist’ who believes Tamil Nadu is not a part of Bharat but just sharing sovereignty with the country. Just a creative way to say ‘we Tamils are different’ which is a typical thought promoted by DMK, its parent body DK and soul vulture evangelical missionaries who are on a spree to convert as many Hindus as they can.

The producer’s tweet gives ample insight into his mind-set as well. He believes that the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) would be followed up with concentration camps, gas chambers, human leather products (some imagination) and other Hitler like activities. Doesn’t he sound like a member of the liberal secular echo chamber?

Can there be any doubt that those harbouring Hindu hatred, which is amply clear from their tweets, would promote anything other than Hinduphobia? Online entertainment platforms like Zee5, Amazon Prime, Netflix etc, also known as OTT (‘over-the-top’) platforms use the internet to bypass traditional distribution streams. They are not required to obtain any government licence or get their content approved from a govt. censor body like CBFC which issues certificates to films.

After criticism of several web series, there was talk of many OTT platforms signing a ‘self-censorship code’. But clearly, as ‘Sacred Games’, ‘Ghoul’, ‘Leila’, ‘Pataal Lok’ and now ‘Godman’ show – Hindu bashing and demonizing Hindu Dharma is considered par for the course by many ‘creative’ people involved in the film & entertainment industry.

It is time for the Government’s I&B ministry to crack down on such Hinduphobic content. Targeting of a particular community and the intent to malign Hindu religion is as clear as daylight, yet such content is increasing by the day while opponents deride the Modi government for ‘fascism’!

This also shows the utter lack of a committed Hindu voice in the entire media ecosystem – including news, entertainment and films. On the one hand, a media house like Zee shows courage to report the truth about Tablighi Jamaat’s misdeeds on Zee News, but its online entertainment arm Zee 5 produces such filth. TimesNow anchor Rahul Shivshankar asks some hard questions of anti-Bharat forces, but the same Times Group’s newspaper Times of India is filled with usual left-liberal tropes against Hindu Dharma.

The makers of this show, its actors and Zee 5 must be taken court to set an example. For far too long, Hindu society has put up with derogatory content in the name of ‘creative license’. Hindu tolerance has further emboldened Hinduphobic producers, directors and actors to promote such content. A line has to be drawn somewhere and this is the time to begin before more such content on the lines of ‘Pataal lok’ and ‘Godman’ floods our screens.
