A remixed version of the song ‘Madhuban mein Radhika naache’ from the 1960 film Kohinoor featuring Sunny Leone has been released by music company SaReGaMaPa. The party number where Leone is seen obscenely gyrating to the lyrics of a Hindu bhajan on the divine love between Bhagwan Krishna and Radha has earned the ire of netizens.
Several YouTube users pointed out how the remixed version was offensive and hurt Hindu sentiments. “The old song Madhuban mein Radhika naache re conveyed her love for Krishna so beautifully. Why use reference to Radhika and Madhuban for a sensual song! This is outrageous!! I get why these songs are made, but come up with something more appropriate for them instead of butchering Hindu sentiments”, commented one user.
Sunny Leone also received angry comments on her Twitter post with Twitterati trending #BoycottMadhuban. They also stated that the makers of the video had no right to defame Hindu deities. It must be noted that those associated with the making of the video are either non-Hindus or self-proclaimed atheists and hence no sensitivity has been displayed towards Hindu sentiments.
Not just netizens but priests from Mathura also raised objections to the music video calling for its ban in addition to an apology from Leone. A report by OpIndia notes:
“We will go to court if the government does not act against the actress and ban her video album,” said Sant Naval Giri Maharaj of Vrindaban, accusing the Bollywood actress of hurting their religious sentiments by performing an “obscene” dance on the iconic “Madhuban mein Radhika naache” song.
She would not be permitted to stay in India unless she removes the scene and apologises publicly, he added.
Condemning the lyrics, the theme and the seductive moves of Sunny Leone on a song depicting Hindu goddess Radha (also known as Radhika), Akhil Bhartiya Tirth Purohit Mahasabha’s national president Mahesh Pathak has said Sunny Leone has maligned the prestige of Brijbhumi by presenting the song in a “derogatory manner”.
Following the backlash, the music company announced that it would change both the name and lyrics of the song. “In light of the recent feedback & respecting the sentiments of our fellow countrymen, we will be changing the lyrics & the name of the song Madhuban. The new song will replace the old one across all platforms over the next 3 days”, read the company’s tweet.
Interestingly, the decision comes after MP Home Minister Narottam Mishra had warned of strict action if the number wasn’t withdrawn within three days. He had added that an FIR would be registered against Sunny Leone and music directors Sharib and Toshi.
“Some vidharmis are constantly hurting Hindu sentiments. Radha is our goddess. We worship her and have different temples for her. Can Shaarib compose such a song on his own religion? They are hurting Hindu sentiments. I am warning Sunny Leone Ji, Shaarib, and Toshi Ji to understand. If they don’t remove the song after apologizing in three days, then we will take action against them,” OpIndia quotes Mishra as saying.
Bollywood has largely been anti-Hindu and has offended Hindu sentiments time and again. The same insensitivity is on display this time as well. OTT web series have only taken Hindu hatred a step further and along with stand-up comedy circles have mainstreamed this hatred in an attempt to “look cool”.
Twitter handle Gems of Bollywood has been highlighting many instances of Bollywood’s anti-Hindu stances. HinduPost has also brought to the fore how creative license has been used as an excuse by anti-Hindu filmmakers to normalize Hindudvesh.
Even though SaReGaMaPa has announced that it would change the lyrics, the moot point remains that Hindus society and tolerance are often taken for granted.
